Chapter 33:
Devil hunting chronicles of the impossible city.
It was still the middle of the day, an unbearably hot day, and the city guard was already exhausted before the fighting even began. An alarm was set. It rang in Center City, forcing people to run and hide and for the guardians to leave their regular jobs and lives and to rush to battle. This only happened when raiders came to the city, but everyone already knew this was so much worse. They all had whatever weapons they could scrape by. A few of them had firearms, but they wouldn't run away, because they knew there were no more places to run away to. The center city was all they had left.
They made trenches and barriers with broken-down trash and chunks of cement. They had plenty of covers to repel invaders, but demons would climb over them with ease. So they needed to kill them first. Whoever had guns would be on the first line of defense. Men and women, all desperate enough to try to build a barrier between the enemy and everyone behind them.
They could see them. They had seen the white devils before, always assuming they were but the poor remains of people doing a ritual that ended in failure, but they knew now they were a sign of something far more terrible. The demons in white were crawling and walking toward the city, dozens of them following a monstrosity that was raised above them. A long white snake-like creature, but the beast had no scales, so it may be better to call it a worm. The demons roared and went forward while the worm crawled slowly. They all saw a figure stuck to the worm's neck. It seemed like a simple raincoat hanging on its back. But they knew about those raincoats. They were always on the lookout for them and they knew they were terrible news.
"There is a dead person stuck on that thing, right? One of the worms smugglers I'm sure. "Two men were watching with scopes from above a building.
"I knew those creepy bastards were bad news." The two men looked at their targets from their scopes. They were hesitant to shoot at all. They looked at each other with a tired look, expecting the other one to move first.
"You think Mr.Collins can kill that thing? "
"If Rush can't, this really is the end. We will probably die before that, cause those white thralls will reach us first" The other man just shrugged and finally opened fire.
The demon screeched and, in tune, his small but terrible army rushed towards the barricades at the border of the city. The guard opened fire. They didn't know what that demon was, but the city guard had killed plenty of thralls before, so they knew that at least their attack would not be in vain against them. But in a moment, they were climbing their walls. Both of the riflemen at the front stood up and pointed their guns below them, forgetting altogether to use their scopes.
They shot at the monster climbing with their claws, but the impact wasn't enough to make it lose its grip. Someone else shot them from behind, making it finally fall. The guardsmen turned back at an unknown voice
"Ambush them, they are already surrounded." From the sides, two groups of people in black suits appeared, all armed, and without any hesitation, they all opened fire from behind the white creatures.
"Mr. Vlad, this is the stupidest thing I have ever done." An old man wearing a black suit threw a single grenade at two of those monsters who were preparing to climb.
"Jeez, I can't believe we are showing our back to that giant thing. " The tall man at his side began to open with an old automatic machinegun."'Whoever the men in black were they seemed terribly confident.
"No need to worry, the captains are just behind us." Aya crouched near them preparing to take a headshot. "Just try not to let them touch us." She told the rest as she saw two figures appear in front of the great worm to stop its march.
The demon worm screeched, feeling its children in pain, but the beast remained standing as a tall man with black long hair walked towards it with a pair of blades in his hands.
"Vepar, a possession-type demon of the worst kind, is always a calamity when it manifests. I'm glad the worms are but a small group of people, else you could have ended this entire district all by yourself. " Cao spoke solemnly to the beast. The demon could feel this man was cursed by himself. Vepar remained still as its neck twisted to look down at him.
"Hey there Vepar, it's me Amii. I'm glad to see that you have manifested again. How do you like this human world? "' Aurora was completely possessed as she walked behind the demon with her guard down, arms raised as if she meant to hug the beast.
"I see you are both demons... why would you stand in the way of my children? " They could both hear the voice of an old woman coming from the corpse that remained fused with the demon.
"You don't belong in this world. You are simply too lacking in manners. The human world requires constant care for others. You can't just make a mess of everything you big white devil, it gets humans angry. "' Cao readied himself with a calm expression.
"I don't blame you for coming here. This place is much, much more fun... than where we came from, but I'm afraid you have made yourself an enemy of my human pals here. "' Aurora raised her sword and pointed at her chest. Her happy expression turned angry suddenly.
"Demons or not, I will always take a chance to kill any arrogant bastard. It feels good to take them out of the clouds. " Aurora recovered control of her body and prepared herself.
''I will not return to that darkness...My children and I will live upon the sun! " The words of the woman were cut by the screaming of the demon that sent all of its thralls into a frenzy. From high above, a man saw this scene from the roof of an abandoned small building. Rush Collins, still dressed in his bartender outfit, was giving orders from above.
"So these are the people in black that keep popping up. I have some questions about these bastards, but for now, tell the men to just work with them. We need as many people as possible... Hell, I think they want to kill the worm by themselves. " Hearing Rush's orders, the messenger at his side nodded and ran off to climb down.
"No way I'm missing this party, I'm the goddamn host here.... " Rush turned back, feeling a terrible chill behind him. He could see that the rooftop was suddenly surrounded by a thick fog. He dropped his binoculars and stared at the center of the mist where a figure began to emerge.
"Sorry, I haven't come for a drink in a while." Abram walked out of the fog. He was wearing a black suit with no tie and his old gray cap that looked very old and dirty compared to his outfit. He had a huge dagger in his hand and a tired expression on his face. Collins had seen those same eyes a few times, flickering in and out of the bar.
"So you are one of them now? This is your fancy new job? Who are you people? "' Collins asked him with a tint of anger in his tone.
"You don't even look surprised." "Abram spoke quietly, laughing weakly.
"You ask too many questions about people that end up dead. I never thought about it, but now you aren't even being sutle old friend. Spill it, Who are you, people?''
"Demon hunters, so don't worry, that worm is going to die. I came up with a proposition for you since we have known each other for so long. We want you to join us. " Abram spoke with a tone as cold as the mist that surrounded them.
"And what If I refuse? '' Collins crossed his arms, and Abram was finding it difficult to want to speak anymore, but he gritted his teeth and looked at him dead in the eye.
"I will have to kill you. We will not let a single demon survive. Unfortunately, that is just what we hunters do.''
