Chapter 3:

♪Who Is The Tyro, Amigo?♪

Everything Goes South

I probably came off a little bit too strong but I managed to get her to join us at one of our (irregular) weekly meetings.

"Don't worry I'll put everyone up to speed on your case, let me start off by saying—"

"Gyu, you picking up girls with your superpowers now?"— said Wham.

"Shut up! Let me do an introductory exercise!"

"What are we— in kindergarten?"— asked Deacon.

"If you stopped interrupting maybe you'll see this is the basics of networking!"

"Oh, here we go again."— sighed Sgt.

"You see, if it weren't for this tight communication we have going, it would be impossible for us to prevent things Sgt. and I foretell."

"That's why you had to act alone during the whole ordeal with this girl?"— Sgt. pointed at her, I had told him about the situation and he was overall pretty against my decision. I thought I had convinced him with the whole 'People can change' spiel, but in reality, this team won't cut it without a powerful collaborator. Better than getting rid of a presumed foe you should turn them to your side.

"Ahem, we'll get to that later. Well, for starters: Hi. My name is Gyu, I know most must of you... know that, so let's cut to the chase. Me and Sgt. started this 'P.U.C.' (Power-User Control) initiative since we both know, firsthand, the dangers super-abilities pose to everyday people."

"Puck?"— the girl inquired.

"No. PeeYouZee. We ain't a hockey team. Anyway, our mission is to defend those vulnerable to power-user attacks as well as get a better understanding of what originates powers and how to better develop them."

"Hold on. We do that stuff?"— asked Wham.

"Yeah, you'd know if you actually went to the last 30 meetings or so."

"I'm sorry, my gym schedule overlaps with the meetings."

"At 4 pm? How much time do you spend there?— let me ask something different, how did you make time NOW?"

"Oh, I got banned."

"Banned?!"

"I tried to lift a treadmill while someone was running and... well..."— Thank god he doesn't use his powers unconsciously, it could've turned out worse.

"Can I introduce myself now?"— asked the girl.

"Sure."

"Ok. My name is... Ten."— Huh? I mean we use nicknames but we do that after telling everyone our real names, not that it matters, or maybe that's truly her name. —"I got my powers... uhm... pretty recently, so yeah... uhm, should I say what they are?"

"Of course, teammates won't know how to work with you if they don't know your powers."— Ironic, coming from me.

"I can move stuff— well not like with my mind. You know how sometimes you look at something from a distance and... well, try to squash it or something?"

"Huh. Ok that sounds interesting."— said Wham. —"Shall we put it to the test?"

"What do you think we should do?"— I ask him.

"If we are trying to get a sense of how strong her power is we should start by doing something involving strength."

He positioned himself just outside the house's garage where our meeting was being held (it belonged to Deacon). It was a very simple setup, he took out his car and we would put a bunch of plastic chairs in a circle.

"Ok. Push me."

"What?"

"Push me with your hands from where you are."

Ten put forth her right hand upright, it looked like a half-praying gesture. She got up from her seat to take a better look at Wham's body and slowly moved her hand. Wham was taken aback by the sudden movement, to anyone who wasn't watching from Ten's point of view it looked as if it were a mime act.

"Could you tell us what you feel?"— referring to Wham.

"I'm... putting... a lot of pressure... into moving forward... ugh.... but it's like there's an invisible wall in front of me."

"Just don't activate your powers, we don't know if you could accidentally weaken Ten's body."

"Weaken my what?"— Ten looked at me with a concerned face which coincided with Wham falling headfirst into the ground. We have confirmed that her powers won't work if she doesn't look directly at the target. I recalled how, back when she attacked the city while flailing her limbs at random, the attacks 'connected' only when her eyesight and arm movement matched. Other than that flaw her attacks really were impenetrable. I just needed to confirm something.

I approached Wham and whispered into his ear.  —"Weaken the invisible wall."

"What are you nuts?!"— he softly replied.

"Do it, we'll get a better understanding of her powers. How else would we defend ourselves if she went rogue."— after getting a disappointed look from Wham he sighed, seeming like he begrudgingly agreed. —"Ten, please repeat what you just did."

"I-if you say so."

"Before that. Deacon, you brought what I asked of you?"— Deacon took out a tire from his storage room, he works in an auto repair shop so I asked him if he had any spare or worn-out tires. —"Wham, lose the sneakers!"— I made him stand in it, thanks to his physical training he had no problem balancing his body. I'm sure he already understood the assignment: Wham's power output would apply to the 'invisible wall' and the tire via him touching them with his hands and the soles of his feet respectively. At first, he had a real problem since his wearing clothes were counted as touching them so whenever he would fight someone he'd tear through some of his clothes easily, it even happened when we first met. Ever since joining us, he's learned to focus on where his output would come from out of his body.

"Ugh!"— He's still struggling and the tire seems to be faring quite badly already. Until finally.

"Ah!"— was Ten's reaction when he saw Wham lunge beyond her hand. —"What happened— OW!"

I karate-chopped her shoulder though not too strongly.

"Why'd you do that?!"— she exclaimed. I was confused as well, with how much Wham had let out of his weakening powers that measly, playful-looking, attack would have been fatal. I would've undoubtedly gone back in time that very instant but this was an amusing result.

"Again."

"WHAT?!"— said Wham and Ten in unison.

The tire was completely demolished as Wham tried to push against the invisible wall formed by Ten's hand. The power is disconnected from her physical form and it won't permanently weaken like most of Wham's victims would.

It was a good session if I said so myself. I got Ten to introduce herself to everyone and had all tell he about their own powers as well, with the exception of Sgt. and I (still wearing that psychic facade). She got a little heated when she find out what Wham's abilities were but I told her I foretold her safety which made her felt at ease. At the end everyone went back home, except for Deacon because he already was at his house. It was already about get dark so Sgt. and I headed to the apartment. But about 30 minutes after we'd gotten inside the doorbell rang.

I saw through the door peephole where I saw Ten standing. —"HOW?!"

I opened the door furiously.

"Sgt. told me the address if I ever wanted to contact you guys I swear!"

"SARGE!"

"She's right."— he said across the room, sitting idly while watching TV. —"I didn't like how you treated her with the excuse of 'training' and for research's sake, so I asked her if she wanted anything in exchange for putting her life in danger and she asked where you lived."

"Still, this is completely out of line!"

"Uhm. It's not that I wanted to stalk you guys or anything. But I've had some questions I didn't get to cover in the meeting."

"In that case you could've sent a text to the many contacts we exchanged at the end of the session!"

"Yeah but—"

"Hey! Are you still up there!"— said a guy I hadn't seen before in my life. This was getting ridiculous.

"You brought another person to the headquarters!"

"That's my brother he brought me here I just had an important question."

"Aaaaaaaagh... out with it."— I said, deafeated.

"You can travel back in time, right?"

...

"I... didn't tell her about that."— said Sgt.
