Chapter 3:
After society, a song for the deaf
There is something in the water.
It's eels to be exact.
Yeah that black pond is just full of eels to the point it looks black from a distance. They really did not like me throwing rocks at them. Anyway I just speared the water without aiming because it is literally impossible to miss with how many there are and how small the pond is.
Oh yeah, I have a spear, I never mentioned that did I? Well, now you know, privacy disrespecting stranger.
It is not exactly an impressive spear, it is basically just a sharp stick. not much different than the arrows I fledged for Melanie. Now that I'm on it, I haven't fledged for her in a while, has she not run low on arrows? Eh, I should get to that soon.
I didn't pick any mushrooms today, we have enough back at camp.
I was actually exploring today. I know that Melanie doesn't like it when I wander away from camp too far on my own, but she isn't my mother. I am a fully grown man dam it.
We should be moving camp soon which is why I am scavenging for a good spot, heh, a scavenger is scavenging. I don't have a sense of humor left, why do you ask?
I encountered a rather odd creature as well. It had the structure and general shape of a crocodile with some unusually long legs, but its head kinda looked like that of a whale. You know how like those massive filter feeders, like the blue whale, it had a a similar shaped odd jaw.
That thing also started talking, he was just complaining about how bad humans taste and that just seeing a human ruins his appetite, he also called me low quality meat which I took as an insult.
I did consider killing him but I know from experience that I would need a decently sized rock to kill something with thick scales, I did not have such a rock on me at the time. So even if I wanted to kill him, I didn't have the tool to do so.
I kept on exploring after the encounter with the rude creature, I even came across a group of people. The people were odd, but everyone is kind of odd since whatever form of global norm was left died during the fall of the old world. I think they were fellow scavengers and if they weren't then they weren't.
Scavengers, you should know what a scavenger is by now unless you are some form of hardcore solo survivalist who never leaves the forest. But then how did you find my notebook? Eh, maybe you also decided to explore.
Scavengers are people with nowhere to stay and nowhere to go. We aren't part of a larger group of people which should have stopped classes from forming, but there are different kinds of scavengers of course.
I am a simple scavenger. We are just there and our main goal is to find good food, we don't want to starve.
Then there are the vultures, they are the reason why the majority of politicians were killed in the fall of the old world. Their goal is to stop any nation wide government to form. I think right after the fall their leader was beaten to death for "sounding suspicously lot like a politician". We eat what we find, they eat the rich.
After them, the hyenas. Scavengers who gathered into gangs and live a bandits life. They mainly deploy hit and run tactics to steal food and more valuable resources from the larger factions. We feed ourselves, they do so too.
The tasmanian devils do not have a set of skills fit to feed themselves, so they rely on others to feed them. They offer mercenary work in return of food and shelter.
I went off track. The people I met were rather odd and they kept asking these weird questions like "do you live in the forest" and "what have you been eating?" or "hasn't the silent huntress come after you?" Melanie may use a few less words but she is still far from being silent. She is pretty loud actually.
I mean, those were some older folks, probably approaching their 40's. I'm saying that as if I'm not 32.
But there was something strange on how they talked to me besides the weird questions. It was as if they were talking to someone unexperienced. I have been in the new world just as long as them, I'm taking that as an insult. They also seemed surprised that I of all people have been out here, I'm also writing that down as an insult.
So many rude people.
I mean they didn't say anything.
But I could feel the rudeness off of them.
I went back to camp without having completed my original goal and started roasting some eels and mushrooms. Melanie wasn't at camp today, but that's fine.
I fledged wooden arrows trying to hum my own lullaby.
I still couldn't sleep.
I am so tired.
