Chapter 146:
The Lifeless Supermoon: A Fateful Encounter
Kanako looked outside, sighing and hearing the sound of wind scratching through the glass windows.
"Kanako!" The teacher shouted. The fast reflexes made Kanako jump out of the chair.
"Yes sir!" He blurted out.
"What are you, in a military?" Kyo asked him playfully.
"Concentrate on the lectures instead of looking outside." The teacher said before continuing his lesson.
But how much he tried, he couldn't. His mind is stuck to that day. Ayane's classroom was close. Should he meet up? Should he not meet up? He didn't know.
Another few sighs and before he knew it, it was lunch time. He was going to the cafeteria. He walked through the crowded hallways downstairs at ground floor where they were selling different flavoured bread. It's been long since he tried out melon bread. Seeing those on the shelves, he was already craving for it.
"I guess I should buy one. Those are cheap if I remember." He went to grab one of the many melon breads on the basket, but his hands touched another's who was trying to do the same.
"Eh?!" He froze. "Ayane-chan?!"
Ayane looked at him, but avoided eye contact. He could see her eyes glitter for a second, then turn dead again. She was like an empty shell, completely lifeless.
She took a step back, indicating him to go first, but didn't say a word. He felt very sharp gazes for the first time in a while. Ayane was looking down the whole time.
"Ayane-chan... can't you talk to me?"
She didn't answer, and looked at her feet, like a guilty child.
"Is someone bothering you?" He pressed. Suddenly he saw her shaking visibly, though not being able to see her face. A few drops of tear fell on the ground before she ran away, vanishing into the crowd. Kanako also couldn't overlook that sharp gazes too. Someone was watching them, but who could they be?
But he felt most saddened for Ayane. He missed her, missed the old, lively Ayane who looked like she was enjoying life. Not this one. Her eyes were now dead... completely dead...
His heart ached. He really did miss her a lot.
It ruined his appetite for melon bread. He went upstairs, frustrated.
"Kanako-kun... please... if I happen to see you again... I might not be able to control myself... from talking and interacting with you..." Ayane mumbled as she navigated with blurred vision. She was trying hard not to talk with Kanako about this, but if these things keep happening, she might fall into his arms and tell him everything. Somehow, the sun was setting in her life. Their life was turning to be a cold, winter night— just like the weather.
Miko-chan looked at Ayane with worried eyes as she was running through the hallway, crying. Seeing her friend at such a state, she couldn't just overlook this. "I have to ask Kanako-senpai about this. Something must've happened between them at the cultural festival. But it's weird. Last time I saw those two together, they were having the best time of their lives. But now... looking at her... something feels wrong."
