Dark Traces of the Past

Synthetic Smiles

Chapter 6 - Dark Traces of the Past

Magnus had revealed his identity and concluded his speech to the crowd. All eyes were on him. He had finally exposed the identity he had hidden for years. The crowd was in deep silence as they watched him. This was the beginning of something big, but Magnus felt strangely unsatisfied with his current success. It was as if he had fallen into an abyss, alone in the darkness. His inner unrest grew with each passing second.

As the speech ended, the lights on stage began to fade one by one. The crowd, still mingling, approached him with curious expressions. Some with admiration, others with questioning gazes. None of them had a void as deep as the one inside him.

Magnus left the hall and walked quietly. With each step, he felt as though he was shedding the pressure of years of keeping his identity a secret. But at that moment, everything for him seemed to be lost in the shadow of the past. He had revealed his identity to the world, but this revelation hadn’t gained him anything. On the contrary, everything began to feel more complicated and meaningful to him.

Sometimes life was full of questions, other times full of answers. But Magnus had been unable to fully find either in recent years.

As his inner unrest deepened, everything suddenly began to slow down. While walking, he felt as if he had to embark on a journey back to the past. Eleanor...

When Magnus thought about the person he was before knowing Eleanor, a pang of pain filled his heart. He had been lonely, chasing ambition and success, but nothing in his life had satisfied him. He had reached the peak of his career, but his soul drifted in a void. The moment he met Eleanor, that emptiness had suddenly vanished.

Eleanor was not just a woman to him. She was the rediscovery of the meaning of life. In her eyes, he saw deep peace, pure love, and strength. They thought they were destined to be together forever, and this thought shaped their lives.

Eleanor’s smile lit up the darkness within Magnus. She was so pure and innocent that Magnus began to worship her in a way. As their bond deepened over time, it became more than just a love relationship—it was as if two souls had merged. The deeper their bond grew, the stronger their connection became.

Eleanor completed Magnus. Her pure love was strong enough to see the darkness inside him. But one day, everything changed.

Eleanor’s illness appeared unexpectedly one night. It started with a slight dizziness. Then gradually, frequent fainting, pain… Eventually, doctors diagnosed her with cancer. At that moment, Magnus’s entire world was shaken. Learning that his beloved wife had a terminal illness brought his greatest fear to life.

At first, he thought they could overcome Eleanor’s illness, but each passing day, as the disease progressed, it shattered that hope. Treatment methods became increasingly unsuccessful. As everything seemed to go wrong, Magnus tried to get closer to her. But Eleanor, without complaint, continued to live each day, facing death. With every passing day, Magnus’s love for his wife deepened, but this love could not save her.

One night, Eleanor woke up in pain. Slowly, she opened her eyes and looked at him. “Let me go, Magnus,” she said, a tear falling from her eye. In that moment, Magnus felt the greatest sorrow a person could experience. Everything was ending at once. Watching Eleanor’s death, he lost another piece of himself.

After Eleanor’s death, Magnus’s world sank into an irreversible darkness. Her loss had erased the last remnants of hope inside him. That day, after losing the woman he once loved, who had shown him life, he lost the meaning of his own existence.

All those years of fame, glory, and success suddenly lost their meaning. People still showed him respect, still accepted him as a leader, but Magnus had become an empty man. There was nothing left inside him. Loneliness, pain, and deep depression clouded every moment of his life. As days passed, there was nothing left of his life. None of those awards, money, or successes brought him solace.

One morning, when he opened his eyes, he only felt that death was near. The future held nothing for him. He had no idea what to do next. Nothing mattered anymore. But within this darkness, a thought began to slowly grow. He had to do whatever it took to bring Eleanor back.

The idea of immortality appeared as a dark thought in his mind. If people could die, why should everything end when he died? This thought started as just a dream. But as Magnus began to reject Eleanor’s death internally, he began searching for the power that would grant her immortality. Many things seemed meaningless, but immortality felt like the beginning of everything.

At first, he didn’t take the idea seriously. But with each passing day, the thought of never seeing the woman he lost again slowly consumed him. Magnus decided to embark on a dark journey. He began to see people as mere tools. Human life was just a test subject. He would harm and cause pain without hesitation, just to collect the energy that would grant him immortality. He now believed that power was everything. He started to belittle people and their worth.

One day, during an experiment, when a subject died and called him useless, Magnus looked at him with an empty gaze, devoid of fear. People were just tools, objects, like this experiment. He would consider any path justified to achieve immortality.

After losing Eleanor, Magnus started working on biomutation. At first, it was just a search for a solution. But over time, this quest took on a darker form. He began experimenting with changing people’s souls and bodies.

To him, the Rares were just test subjects. Their lives were nothing more than a tool to serve Magnus’s goal. He began using more and more people, collecting their energy to make himself and them stronger. But nothing was enough for him. Each experiment took him deeper.

And Magnus, in his search for power, ignored everything. He had lost the value of human life. He started seeing everyone as a tool he could use. To gather enough energy from his subjects, he planned to create the immortality stone. However, the stone was not yet completed.

For Magnus, power had become not just a tool, but a way of life. Everything had a price. And he was ready to pay it.

Magnus slammed the door and walked out. It was a dark night. All the sounds had disappeared. People would talk about his revelations, but he was now only carrying the weight of the past. Losing Eleanor had taught him that everything was temporary and that human life was meaningless.

But the emptiness inside him still grew. The process of hiding his identity had taught him that neither power nor immortality would change anything. But he was determined to continue his path.

And Camille... Her sorrow was one of the deepest wounds of Magnus’s past. Losing his daughter was as deep as losing Eleanor. Camille was trying to come to terms with Magnus’s true identity. The darkness within him was slowly creeping towards her.

Magnus continued his inner journey with these thoughts. Losing Eleanor hadn’t destroyed him—it had forced him to become much stronger. He disappeared into the darkness, creating his own world, and would stop at nothing to gain power.

But Camille... She had witnessed Magnus’s mistakes. She was once Eleanor’s daughter, but this dark journey was slowly consuming her as well. Magnus might lose his daughter in this war he was fighting for his wife, just as he had lost Eleanor.
