Chapter 4:

Moonlit Comebacks

Guns, Fangs, and Roses

The Cherringtons are following suit, as they got up from their seat. As soon as I set my foot outside of fhe saloon, I started to run for it. I heard they shouted something.

“Hey you, stop running!”

Like hell I’m going to do that.

I didn’t anticipate that they’d be running this fast. Despite getting a head start, they managed to significantly close their distance to me.

I took a left turn on the cross road near the park. I then took a right into the alleyway that is between the theater and the gun shop.

I toppled over the stack of wooden crates in the alleyway to slowdown their pursuit.

I took another right, despite knowing that I can get to my Inn faster if I took left. Why? It’s because I’m betting on something as a last ditch effort.

The streets was quite empty.

It’s both a blessing and a curse. As I can run without having to worry about bumping to anyone. But it also made it harder for me to lose them without anyone obstructing their view.

Before long, I reached my destination. The alleyway leads to a dead end, but, there’s a stack of wooden crates that I can use to climb over the wall.

I climbed over the crate. But just as I began trying to jump over the wall, I heard a gunshot that’s followed by a bullet hitting the wall in front of me.

I frozed as I realised that this might be it. I then turned around to see that both of them has pointed their revolvers at me.

"Give it up partner!"

I stand there dazed, as I accepted my fate. “I guess this is it.” I thought to myself.

If all the crimes I committed are tallied up, imprisonment won’t be enough for me. The only thing that’s waiting for me is the circular noose on the gallow.

Just as I lost all hope, a lady jumped from the roof and landed in between me and them. It was none other than the lady from the saloon.

She threw away her hat to the side, fully exposing her pretty and pale face alongside her shiny blonde hair that are illuminated by the moonlight.

Despite only looking at her from behind, she’s still the most beautiful woman I’ve seen.

“Where did you...? That doesn’t matter, step out of the way or we will shoot you!”

Said the Cherrington that’s on the right. She then replied in a sinister voice as she whip her hair.

“If that’s the case, you left me with no choice.”

Even though I was looking from behind, I caught a glimpse of her wide smile.

“Is that...? Are y— ugh!”

Before he can finish what he about to say, she swipe his gun away and punched him in the gut. The man flew backward as a results of it.

The other guy shot at her. But he missed, as she managed to dodged him and punched him in the face after swiping his revolver.

“This has gotten serious, call backup!”.

His words were followed by the sound of a whistle. She then turned around as she shout at me.

“It’s your chance, run!”

Without wasting a single moment, I climbed over the wall. I arrived at the street on the other side of the wall. From here I just need to head straight.

I used all the energy I had left. The Inn has come into my view. Right outside of it, Betsy’s still there with her leash tied to the post. Glad that no one stole her from me.

I stormed through the door, startling the landlord who was reading the guess book.

“What’s the matter Marshall?”

“Mister, can I borrow that book for a second?”

He complied, as he handed the book to me. I then browse the guest names who checked in this morning.

And there it is, I found it. The name that’s written is different, but I’m sure that’s her.

“Can you at least tell me what happened?”

Ignoring him, I headed upstairs in a rush, as I don’t care if the stairs break.

I then entered my room and opened the wardrobe. I took out the wooden box and place it down on the table. Reaching under the bed, I dragged out my knapsack.

After wearing it, I opened the box on the table.

Inside, there is a pair of ‘Smith & Wesson Model 3’ Revolver, complete with the gun belt with a holster attached to each side.

“I never thought that today is going to be the day I use these god damn thing again.”

I then take them out and wear it on my waist.

I left my room and bust through the room across to me. On the bed there’s a tan coloured duffle bag, bingo. I took it with me and head downstairs.

“Here’s my and her fee, we both are checking out!”.

As I tossed 5 dollars at him.

“You’re leaving? Where to?”

“I don’t know. But I don’t think I’ll ever comeback. Goodbye mister Sam!”

I said with a smile, as I walked out.

I go towards Betsy and untied her leash. I tied my belongings to her back. I then spoke in an uplifting voice as I mounted her.

“Come on Betsy, we got a princess to save. Heeyah!”

Of course, without fail, she responded with a grunting neigh.

I said princess. But in reality, she’s no ordinary princess. As my suspicions were proven to be true one by one. I figured out who she was. Or in this case, what she really was.

Starting from the obvious, her pale white skin that’s akin to the moonlight.

Her superhuman strength that’s displayed, when she jumped from a two story building unscathed. Followed by how the Cherrington flew back just from a punch.

And the final nail in the coffin. Their reaction to seeing her teeth when she smiled. They must’ve seen her fangs.

So I wasn’t seeing things. There’s no mistaking it, she’s definitely a Vampire.

As I raced through the city, trying to locate her by hearing the gunshots and commossions caused by the lawmen that pursued her, my boss’ voice echoed in my head.

I guess this is what he meant, when he said to not let it slip away if the opportunity arose.
