Chapter 7:
System Error: The Ruin of Fate
Everything around me felt overwhelmingly foreign—cold and unsettling. I had no idea where I was, but more importantly, I had no idea how to get out. As a wave of panic surged inside me, one question echoed in my mind: How would I get home?
Before coming here, I had complained about how dull my life was—the monotonous cycles, the endless repetition. But now... Now, I had been ripped away from everything I knew and thrown into an entirely unfamiliar world. Maybe I shouldn't have resented my predictable life so much. At least back there, I knew what to do. I had a path, a sense of security. But here? Nothing was familiar. Nothing belonged to me.
The eerie silence of the park was beginning to break. At first, it was a faint, indistinct hum. Then, I started hearing the echo of footsteps and hushed conversations. My eyes darted around, scanning my surroundings as my unease grew stronger by the second.
Then, movement. First, scattered murmurs—then, hurried voices.
"He must be here. The location is accurate."
The moment I heard those words, my body tensed.
"Physical description: black hair, average height, pale complexion. Keep your eyes sharp!"
My heart pounded against my ribs. Were they looking for me? But why? What had I done?
The sound of rain mixed with my erratic heartbeat, reverberating around me. I turned my head slightly and saw figures clad in dark gray uniforms that shifted under the dim light, momentarily transforming into a shimmering silver hue. They moved through different sections of the park with calculated precision.
Who were they? Why were they here? Who were they searching for?
Panic coiled in my chest, tangling my thoughts into a frantic mess. If they really were after me, it could only mean one thing: I was in serious trouble.
I immediately ducked into the nearest cluster of trees, my breath hitching as I pressed my back against the rough bark. My heart pounded violently against my ribs, the erratic rhythm almost deafening in the tense silence. A cold sweat clung to my skin, and my trembling fingers dug into the damp earth as I fought to steady my ragged breathing. Every muscle in my body screamed to run, yet fear rooted me in place, paralyzing me as the voices grew closer. The voices grew closer. One of them stopped and called out to his companion.
"Get in touch with the command center. Confirm if we're in the right place."
A second later, another figure listened to a response in his earpiece before nodding.
"Affirmative. This is the location. He's here somewhere. Must be hiding."
The moment they turned towards my hiding spot, my blood ran cold. I had seconds before they found me.
I bolted.
"There he is!"
"Stop!"
Their shouts echoed behind me, but I didn’t stop. Yet, something felt off. My legs strained more than they should have, as if an unseen force was pushing against me. The air around me thickened, a strange resistance slowing my movement. The footsteps chasing me grew louder, closing the distance between us.
I sprinted out of the park, plunging into the city streets. The narrow and shadowy alleys offered me some advantage, but the pounding presence behind me made it impossible to breathe properly.
Streetlights cast a dim glow, their yellow and crimson hues blending into the damp cobblestone paths. The towering buildings around me loomed like silent watchers—elegant, yet eerily unfamiliar. This was a city of modernized Japanese architecture, seamlessly integrated with an advanced technological infrastructure. The structures bore the intricate wooden carvings and sweeping eaves of ancient Japanese design, yet something about them felt distorted. Their surfaces shimmered with a strange technological aura, as if the very walls pulsed with unseen energy. The soft glow from the windows, the faintly flickering neon signs, and the violet-tinted sky all screamed one undeniable truth: this place was not my world.
My footsteps echoed against the stone pavement, shattering the fragile silence. As I raced through narrow passages, I caught glimpses of intricate carvings on the worn-down walls—old signs with symbols I couldn’t understand. This city... It felt like it had existed for thousands of years, yet had somehow been lost to time.
To anyone watching, I must have looked like a fugitive. But the reality was worse—I was a complete stranger. Lost. Disoriented. And worst of all, I had no idea why I was here.
I ran. But I had no destination. No plan. Only the certainty that getting caught was not an option.
As I turned a sharp corner, a tall figure appeared before me.
I hesitated for just a fraction of a second—too long. Before I could change direction, a forceful impact sent me sprawling backward. I hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of my lungs.
"Are you going to keep running?"
The voice was deep, authoritative.
I lifted my head, locking eyes with a man whose piercing blue gaze held an icy certainty. He wasn’t just calm—he was resolute, unwavering.
Fear coiled around my chest like a vice. I instinctively tried to scramble back, but my retreat was halted when I bumped into someone standing behind me. A shiver ran through me as I looked up, finally registering the uniforms they wore.
Dark, metallic suits—crafted from an advanced alloy that shifted with their movements, flexible like fabric yet gleaming like steel under the dim light. The material pulsed faintly, absorbing ambient energy, while intricate circuitry glowed beneath the surface, hinting at technology far beyond anything I had ever seen. Faint, pulsating blue lines ran across the material, flickering like an unseen current of energy. The emblems on their shoulders bore sharp geometric patterns, like hinting at some form of ranking system. They weren’t police. They weren’t soldiers. I guess... But they were something—something structured, something disciplined.
I inhaled shakily. "What do you want from me? I haven’t done anything!"
The man before me didn’t react. He tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable, then spoke in a cold, detached tone.
"Guardian Kael, establish a link with headquarters. Confirm if he’s the target. Transmit his image."
"Understood, Captain Hikari," Kael replied without hesitation.
The officer nodded, and a circular light shimmered at the center of his chest—an eerie glow activating with a low hum. Symbols flickered across the surface, rotating as a faint blue light extended outward, sweeping over me. I could feel it—an invisible force tracing every contour of my body, scanning me from head to toe.
As the light moved across my form, a single desperate thought surfaced: Maybe this was a mistake.
They were looking for someone who resembled me, weren’t they? What if I wasn’t actually the person they were after? What if this was all just a coincidence? If I remained calm, I could reason with them. I could explain that this was a misunderstanding. I wasn’t a criminal—I wasn’t even supposed to be here.
Just as that fragile hope took shape, the earpiece crackled to life.
"Confirmation received, Captain. The target has been verified."
My entire body went rigid. A cold wave of dread crawled up my spine, my muscles locking in place as though I had been turned to stone. I instinctively tried to step back, but there was nowhere left to run. My breath hitched, shallow and rapid, as if my lungs had forgotten how to function. My mind screamed at me to move, to fight, to do something—but all I could do was stand there, trapped in the grip of my own terror. My throat tightened, my breath came in short gasps.
No. No, this had to be a mistake… right?
"Take him to headquarters. I don’t want any unnecessary trouble."
The moment the command was given, the guards closed in around me. The fear I had barely contained until now erupted into something uncontrollable. My heart pounded against my ribs as my chest tightened with an unbearable pressure.
There was nowhere left to run. The walls of the unfamiliar city felt like they were closing in, their cold, unyielding presence sealing my fate. No escape—only the crushing weight of inevitability.
In this unknown place, surrounded by strangers with unclear intentions, I was being dragged into an abyss of uncertainty.
