Chapter 1:

The east front

Across the border

"Do you really think you are alone in the world little Lily? Look up there, high in the sky. What do you see?" My grandfather said softly, holding my hand.. "The stars. So many bright stars" I replied, trying to smile.. "That’s right, the stars! They will accompany you and be close to you when you feel alone. They will always be there with you, ready to show you the way.". "Grandpa... Do you think mom and dad have become stars too?" I was about to cry but I held back tears with difficulty.. "Certainly Lily! They will always be with you, up there as well as here..." Grandfather Charles pointed to my heart. Suddenly he stood up to point out the brightest star:" See how you will feel los..." ]. The sound of the alarm woke me to a shock. I was numb, my heart beating like crazy. "Get up, we are in emergency, we must hurry and leave!" the captain screamed as he passed through the beds in the middle of the night. I prepared myself, took my backpack, and in no time I was ready and waiting for orders. We left immediately, towards the front to the east.. I remember that place very well, it was where I lived. More than ten years have passed since the beginning of the war and after the death of grandfather Charles, I was entrusted to a section of the army for children without relatives.. Grandfather Charles.. I wonder why he came back to me in a dream that night. We walked for hours and ,in that time, I tried to remember what my grandfather told me on that occasion. I remember that he took me camping in the woods of the estate ,after my parents dead I felt alone and abandoned, and that night gave me some hope. He said something about the stars, but most of all he focused on one in particular, and then....

Medical Corps of the Ingx Army. Pay attention!" The captain suddenly stopped and pointed to the battlefield in front of us.
"Years of training have brought you here. Now is the time to show your country courage and determination. Help your comrades and come back safe." We all started divided into teams. None of us hesitated even for a moment.
I knew those lands like my own pockets. When I was a little girl, Grandpa Charles took me out to explore the woods, we’d camp and be out for many days.
He always said that it was very important to know how to survive in the middle of nature and that every unforeseen situation could be solved if you were ready.
The sound of the machine guns is constant and the grenades kept on stun me; I was advancing with the sole idea of saving as many lives as possible and making myself useful.
My companions kept falling, one after another. A grenade then shots, screams then blood; and in the end the thud of the bodies that fell to the ground.
I lost control of my legs and my entire body trembled, and I couldn't speak a word.I stood there in the middle of the battlefield, completely motionless and scared. No training can prepare you for the vision of death which, incessantly, continues to follow you and show itself before your eyes.
"Sorry, grandpa, I’m not ready for this." i whispered looking at the stars.

Suddenly a red light appeared in the sky. I looked at it frozen; it was as if death itself were appearing before us." Grandpa, Mom, Dad. We’ll be together again soon"
"Get down!" a soldier suddenly shouted, jumping on me. After the sky split, an agonizing whistle followed. When I regained my senses, I only saw destruction and death around me.By using his body as a shield, the soldier saved me. IDespite the pain and burns, I was able to stand up with difficulty.. I looked at the soldier’s face. He was a boy about my age and on his shoulders he had sewn the flag of the people of Aux. Our eternal enemies
