Chapter 12:

The Edge of Control

A YEAR TO VANISH

The night was suffocating. Heavy clouds swallowed the moon, casting the city in an unnatural darkness. Kain stood by the window, his eyes reflecting the distant glow of neon signs. The skyline stretched endlessly before him, but his mind was elsewhere—caught between the past and the weight of what was coming.

The room behind him was quiet except for the sound of slow, steady breathing. She was still there, sitting on the edge of the bed, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the rim of an empty glass. Neither of them spoke for a long time.

"You’re thinking too much," she finally murmured.

Kain’s lips curled into a faint smirk, but he didn’t turn around. "Occupational hazard."

She stood, walking toward him with the deliberate grace she always carried, stopping just behind him. "You’re not invincible, you know."

He exhaled, finally shifting his gaze to meet hers in the reflection of the glass. "No one is."

Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken truths. Then, without warning, she reached out, her fingers ghosting over his shoulder before trailing down his arm. He let her.

"Then stop acting like you don’t need anyone," she said softly.

He turned.

In an instant, the distance between them was gone. His hands found her waist, pulling her closer, and she met him with equal force, her fingers tangling in his shirt as their lips crashed together. It was desperate and unrelenting, neither of them willing to let go, neither of them wanting to.

She pressed him back against the window, her breath warm against his skin as she whispered, "We don’t have time for this."

Kain smirked against her lips. "That’s why we should take what we can."

She hesitated—just for a fraction of a second—before giving in.

The city below carried on, unaware.

Elsewhere, the night was far less forgiving.

Haruki tightened his grip on the handle of his knife as the distant echoes of footsteps reached his ears. The abandoned research facility was colder now, the air thick with something unseen, something watching.

"We should keep moving," Aoi whispered, her breath visible in the freezing air.

Renji scanned the corridor ahead with his flashlight, the beam catching flickers of movement in the shattered glass. "Yeah. Before whatever’s in here decides to introduce itself."

Kisaragi adjusted his glasses, flipping through the file they had found. "Project Eden wasn’t just about enhancement. It was about something else. Something worse."

Haruki glanced at him. "Worse how?"

Kisaragi’s expression darkened. "If these reports are accurate, the test subjects didn’t just become stronger. They lost something in the process."

Aoi swallowed hard. "Lost what?"

Kisaragi’s fingers tightened around the paper. "Themselves."

A low, guttural sound echoed through the hall.

Haruki’s muscles tensed. "We need to go. Now."

The group moved quickly, their footsteps barely making a sound against the cracked tiles. But the presence behind them didn’t fade. It was following.

And it was getting closer.
