Chapter 0:
Tondra
The year was 2029, but in the grand cycle of history, it was known by another name - The Virenic Age, characterized by the Virenic System.
It had begun as a mere classification tool, a system devised to bring order to an increasingly chaotic world. Wars, economic collapses, religious conflict, resource shortages - humanity had long teetered on the brink of self-destruction.
The Virenic System was introduced as a solution. A comprehensive, data-driven method to assess individuals and determine their optimal place in society. A chance to assess their powers, to see what they can become.
At first, it was simple: a person’s classification influenced their career, their
education, even their likelihood of committing a crime. Governments, corporations, and institutions embraced it eagerly, refining it further with each passing year. It promised efficiency. Stability. Purpose. But as its influence grew, so did the divide between those who accepted it and those who resisted. For some, the Virenic System was a revolution - a way to maximize potential and eliminate wasteful ambition. For others, it was a cage, an algorithmic fate from which there was no escape. Cities and nations integrated it in different ways, some enforcing adherence, others using it as mere guidance.
And then there were places like Tondra. A town forgotten by the march of progress, tucked away in the snowy mountains in the North, shielding it from the world’s relentless evolution.
While the rest of society moved forward, reshaped by Virenic classifications and the structures they imposed, Tondra remained unchanged. It had no surveillance networks, no automated systems, no digital records linking its people to the classifications that ruled the outside world.
To an outsider, it was a relic - a place out of time. To those who lived there, it was home.
But no place remained untouched forever.
And soon, even Tondra would feel the pull of the Virenic Age.
