The sound of the alarm wakes me up. It's already seven in the morning. I get up and go to take a shower. It feels so good when you don't have lectures in the morning. It's my vacation where I can enjoy it without any academic stress. I turn on the shower and wet my body.
After the shower, I put my yellow shirt with white stripes on it along with blue jeans. I looked into the mirror and saw my silky blonde hair and wide black eyes.
A notification pops up on my phone. I read the text. It's from my friend Clara. I was just going to answer her when her call came.
“Liam, are you coming in this morning shift or not.” Her tone is calm.
“Ofcourse I am coming.” I said to her, and she hung up the call after saying bye.
Then I walk towards my study table and I look at my achievement board. I need to be accepted into Blue Shark University. Somehow my grades are fine and my extra curricular activities are also fine. I need something to prove to them that I am eligible to study there. As I open my drawer, I find an old newspaper. And I see his face. Everyone in my town knows him . Everyone in Everbrook knows him. Stiles Bennet who was found dead in his own house. Police investigation says that it was a suicide and the case is closed. It's about a year old.
Should I try to solve this case? Maybe I should investigate it. What if I found something? The body was found with some scratches. The doctor says that he used a knife to cut his nerves from his hand.
But why will he do that? I know him. Just a bit. He was a year older than me. He was in my school. He was a quiet boy. And he was also good in studies. Also he was accepted into Blue Shark University. It is just weird. Why would he die if he got accepted in this popular university and ruined his life?
I thought about it while coming to Hazelwood Cafe where I work as a part-time student. I moved my eyes to my watch as I realized it's eight. It's almost time for my shift as I ran and reached there. I changed my clothes. I saw Clara already started working.
She is in my class and my childhood friend. She has long black hair and is a few inches shorter than me.
“So you finally came here.” She said, teasing me.
“I have something to talk about.” I said to her, taking the customer's order.
“Say quick.” she says as she is making a coffee.
“I am thinking of investigating the case of Stiles Bennet. The one who was found dead in his home and —” she cuts me off.
“I know. He committed suicide. But why are you thinking of solving it? It's already solved.”
“I don't think he suicide. He didn't have any reason.”
“And how will you prove it? You are not even a detective.”
“Well I have watched crime shows and movies all these seventeen years. I know I can do this.”
“Oh Liam, don't be delusional. Be practical and realistic. It's not a movie. It's the real world we live in.”
“I know but I will prove that. I need to be accepted into Blue Shark University.”
“Oh. So it's about university. Do something else. Why are you putting your life in danger?”
“I have already thought about it. I am good at running and solving puzzles.”
“Fine. Do whatever you want. But I warned you.”
As I work for two hours and my shift ends, I return back to my home. I saw Ella outside my house. I walked towards her. She was waiting for someone.
She is a few inches taller than me. She has dark brown hair. She was my tutor in high school and used to help me in studies. Then we started to go out and date.
Ella is also my ex-girlfriend. We used to be close before she broke up with me. I decided to meet her with my sister who she gradually developed feelings for. I was not sure about it so I let her hang out with my sister Mia.
After a few days, she broke up with me. I wasn't angry with her. But I was sad. She realised that she likes my sister. Both my sister Mia and Ella are three years older than me. They are quite similar in many ways.
“Looking for Mia.” I asked Ella.
“Yes, I am.” she replied.
“Wait inside. I will make you some coffee. She would be late from work.” I said as I opened the door with my keys. She walked inside and sat on the couch.
“Black coffee without sugar and milk, right.” I asked.
“Yes. You still remember it.” She asked me.
“Of Course. You always used to order it whenever we went out.”
Then I served her the black coffee which she likes. Then I tried to start a conversation with her about her relationship with her sister.
“Where are you up to now?”
“We decided to go to the amusement park for our long drive today.” She says, smiling brightly.
As we were talking about it, my sister Mia entered the living room. She has blonde hair like me. We both are similar in looks.
“What are you doing here? Didn't you have a babysitting job?” My sister asked me.
Right. I totally forgot about it. I looked at the time and it was already eleven. I quickly ran towards my red car and started the engine. It's an old car but works fine.
Few minutes later, I reached the house I was going to babysit for. The parents say that they will return back at night. So I go to check on them.
They are twins, a boy and a girl who just turned five a few days ago. I have a lot of experience in this field as I used to babysit when I turned fifteen years old.
The best way to pass the time is to let the kids watch a movie. So we watched a kids movie which made two hours easy. Then I gave the twins their lunch. The last thing is to make them sleep.
It's good that I can sing. I can sing lullabies for them. I sang it for a few minutes until they closed their eyes. Now they will sleep for a few hours. It's already two in the afternoon.
What should I do now? I still have a few hours left. Right. I must search more about the case of Stiles Bennet. I unlocked my phone and searched for the news. I used my airpods and listened to all the news.
It's all the same. I already know all this stuff. Maybe I should investigate it by asking others. Like his family and friends. They must know him better.
As the time passed by, It was already seven. The sun was setting. The parents came back. I took the money and moved towards my car.
I started the engine and drove it towards my house. When I reached my house, I quickly changed my clothes and wore a black hoodie with a simple trouser and went back outside.
Now it's time for my evening jog. Then I started running in my neighbourhood. As I listen to the music from my airpods. A notification pops up. .
[Clara] : Hey! How was your babysitting? Had fun?
[Me] : Yeah! On my way to go jogging.
[Clara] : I am so jealous. You work so hard. You never hang out with any of our friends.
[Me] : You know I am saving money for my new car.
[Clara]: You know that car is expensive. It will take many years.
[Me] : That's why I am babysitting and not wasting my money on silly things.
[Clara] : Alright. Be delusional. I have work now. Bye.
[Me] : Alright bye.
It's eight o’ clock now. As I was passing through a bar I saw someone in the bar drinking. It was an older lady. I guess I saw her somewhere. Oh right. It's Stiles Bennet’s mother.
Maybe I should go and ask her some questions about the suicide. Or maybe not. It's not a good idea. But I should try it. I try to go inside without getting caught. I already entered the bar.
It was easy. I guess maybe because of my height. The guards didn't think I was a minor. I am 6 feet tall by the way. I went towards the lady.
I sat on one of the tables and tried to have a conversation with her. She was drinking a glass of wine. I could see that she was not okay. A part of me said to walk away and not talk to her but a part of me insisted that I talk with her.
“Are you Gloria Bennet by any chance?” I asked her.
“Yes. But who are you? I can't recognise you.” She replied.
“Well. I am Liam Wilson. I am in the same high school as your son Stiles was. I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about him?”
“Sorry but I don't like to talk about the suicide anymore. It's been a rough year and I am trying to forget it. And why are you asking about him?”
“I am trying to find some clues to prove that it was not a suicide. I don't think that he killed himself. He didn't have any reason. It's alright if you can't have a conversation with me.” I said.
“Really. You think so. I think that too. Why would he kill himself when he was happy with his life? You can ask me some questions.” she said, smiling slowly.
“Mind if I record this conversation for some evidence.” I asked her, taking out my phone.
“Of Course not.”
