Chapter 1:

The beginning

Evolution

«'m so bored, I don't know what to do anymore... I guess I should take a bath» —Canela thought while she cleaned her body by licking herself—.
«The truth is that paying attention to things exhausts me a lot, I wonder why I have to focus so much on something to be able to see it? All I can see is the black colour. If I try hard, I can break the curtain of darkness for a few seconds and see the silhouette of some things, see what the world really looks like... I feel like without my sense of smell it would be upside down already».
“I smell… Food! Finally!” said as she ran away.
—Calm down Canela, it's barely noon —she said happily while petting her head— you're such a cute little bunny. I love you!
"I'd like to know what this strange animal that walks on two legs is saying" thought Canela. "Luckily, it seems that she is very kind and always takes care of me."
Canela was a white and cream colored rabbit, with half of her face light brown. She lived with her owner Ema, a 20-year-old girl, on the second floor of a house. They both led a quiet life, but that afternoon something changed inside of Canela.
—Ouch! My head! my body hurts so much!
As if all the information of the universe was being injected directly into Canela's brain, she was perplexed by everything that was happening, she stood motionless on two legs, and doesn't even notice that she was staring at Ema with a sinister face, until she was able to regain her senses.
Canela's brain increased in size slightly and her anatomical structure changed, developing vocal cords similar to those of humans.
—What is this? I can… see? Yes, I can feel everything…
—Who's there? Who said that?! —Ema asked scared.
—Ema! Did you speak my language?! Why did I understand what you said? —said Canela bewildered.
—Aaaah! —she screamed terrified, grabbing a kitchen knife from the counter and lunging at Canela.
—What's wrong with you, are you crazy?! —she said, dodging the cuts, — It's me, don't you recognize me?!
—Damn it, help! —She exclaimed, waving the knife without looking.
An awkward silence fell over the place, both of them looked at each other for a few seconds and both seemed to be about to cry, but only one of them broke down.
—“Fuck you!” Canela screamed as she clutched her sore cheek.
She showed supernatural strength by taking a run and jumping towards the window, breaking it and reaching the balcony. She was terrified by the height, but her feelings gave her the courage to take the initiative, jumping towards a lamppost that was easily within her reach, she managed to stick to the wood with her hooves to fall in a controlled manner, although hurting her paws in the process.
Canela was bewildered by everything she was seeing, all the enormity of the city, the vehicles, the houses and the streets, all of this was new to her. The curtain of darkness that she had carried all her life had finally broken. Canela continued running through the city and had the bad luck of passing by a big dog, who could not contain his impulses, his pupils dilated and he launched himself at maximum speed towards Canela, pulling on the leash and throwing his elderly owner to the ground. Canela continued to run away from the dog for several blocks with all her strength despite the pain, fear and confusion she felt. At the same time, a black cat that was lying on a rooftop saw them pass by.
—What's going on?! I thought it was too quiet here —he exclaimed, analyzing the situation.
The chase continued and Canela made a mistake and turned into a dead end.
—Okay, that's as far as you go —said the dog while drooling.
—Stop please! I don't know what I did to you but let me go!
—You haven't done anything, but I haven't tasted meat for months. I'm fed up with those stupid stones they give me to eat. I won't let an opportunity like this pass me by!
—I-I'm sorry to hear that but there must be something I can do, let's think of something but don't hurt me, I beg you —she said fearfully as she backed up until she touched the end of the alley.
—I'm really sorry, I don't mean to make you suffer, just close your eyes, I promise it will be quick.
The dog was about to pounce, when suddenly a rapid trail of light was seen bouncing in a zigzag pattern off the walls and falling, placing itself between the dog and the bunny, a black shadow.
"What is that?" they both asked each other.
—Hey buddy, how about you stop bothering the rabbit and get out of here? —he said in the darkness, while a pair of green eyes lit up and a somewhat smug smile appeared on his face.
—Well, this has become interesting —said the dog while laughing— unfortunately for you, I hate cats and I'm in a very bad mood! Tell me one reason for doing that?
—Well, you see, it turns out that you are in my territory and I will not let you eat anyone without my permission.
—Ha ha ha! A kitten owns the city, that's the stupidest lie I've ever heard —said the dog— get out of the way, I'll just have a sandwich.
—Stay behind me —said the cat to Canela— didn't you hear me?! I told you to get out, you fucking dog!
The cat looked at him with a penetrating gaze, imposing an aura much larger than the size of the cat, resembling the appearance of a cat skeleton shaped like a grim reaper. Even though the dog was intimidated for a second, the fragility of his ego prevented him from backing down at this point.
—Grrrr damn it! —he screamed as he lunged at the cat.
The dog began to bite with all his strength but the cat was very agile and managed to dodge each of his attacks. Every time he could, he launched a counterattack by scratching the dog's body or face.
The dog was very irritated but managed to maintain his composure for a moment. He devised a strategy and quickly grabbed his leash. With a few twists of his neck and the help of his mouth and paws, he managed to catch the cat with the leash made of chains.
—Damn it got me! —the cat shouted.
The cat was in a desperate position where he only had one free arm and only one attack movement was possible, he thought that if he was fast enough he could manage to reach it. So he launched his paw at full speed towards the dog's face, however, the restriction of the chains reduced the speed of the attack enough and the dog was able to dodge it, mercilessly he closed his jaw with all his strength, breaking the cat's left front leg in two parts.
—¡Gyaaaa!
—No! —Canela shouted.
As she witnessed the scene, Canela felt her heart beat faster. A fire began to run through her entire body. She jumped and instantly propelled her towards the dog, even she was surprised by what she had managed to do.
—Let him go! —Canela exclaimed.
Without hesitation she landed the hardest blow she could on the dog's ribs, a crack was heard inside the body and the dog was forced to loosen the grip on its jaw due to the blow.
The cat, with tears in her eyes, enduring the pain, quickly freed herself and unleashed her fury by swiping straight at the dog with all her might, slamming her paw into his eye. A shower of blood immediately followed, leaving the dog dying in pain on the ground.
Canela was in shock at everything that had happened and what she was witnessing.
—Hey you! Don't just stand there, we have to get out of here! —said the cat.
—Y-yes, I'm coming! —said Canela, bewildered.
The two of them ran off with the cat in the lead, guiding Canela to safety. The cat picked up a nearly empty wine bottle and bits of clothing from the trash, then used the surroundings to deftly climb up onto a rooftop. Somewhat shaken but relieved at the same time, they lay down to regain their energy.
—Thank you so much for saving me, really if you hadn't helped me I would be dead right now.
—Don't worry, I would have felt bad about myself if I didn't help you, besides I'm not much of a dog person —he said laughing in pain, while putting alcohol on his paw and enduring the pain with a piece of clothing in his mouth— Aggh!
—I can't believe how your leg turned out, I'm so sorry, is there anything I can do to make up for it? —she said with guilt and sadness on his face.
—Well, I hadn't really thought about taking advantage of the situation, but I guess you should pay me back somehow... nah, don't believe it, it was nothing —he said while tying the clothes on his arm— voila!
—No, it's okay, tell me what you want and I'll do it. I'd feel bad about myself too if I didn't make it up to you. My name is Canela, by the way. What's your name?
—I'm Evan, it's a pleasure. Look, I'll be honest with you. Do you see this town? I own it all and it wouldn't hurt to increase my troops... but now that I'm injured, I'd like someone to lend me a hand.
—So that was true? It's amazing! But I must warn you, I know it's hard to believe but I'm new to this whole real world thing... I don't know anything—she said a little embarrassed.
—Oh, don't tell me, you're a domestic rabbit, I should have guessed.
—I'm a what?
—Damn, it's worse than I thought, you won't be able to help at all like this... well, don't worry, you better go back home, this is no place for someone like you.
—Wait, I can't go back! I'll learn fast, I swear, give me a chance.
—Let's see, why do you say you can't come back?
—It's hard to understand, but the reason you saw me running away was because I was escaping from a two-legged animal... I don't know what it's called, but I've been living with it for a long time. I don't know how it happened, but today she was crazy, she called me a monster and wanted to hurt me...
—I think I understand… Canela, did you by any chance feel some kind of tension in your body? I mean a kind of very strong pain, especially in the head and throat.
—Yes! Now that you mention it, that's exactly where it hurt.
—It's just as I feared, I'll explain quickly, we can talk to each other normally, with any species except humans, but for some reason some animals are mutating and have the ability to talk to them, they also acquire the same intellect.
—Really? And you think that happened to me?
—I'm sure you do... that's the reason she was scared away from you, it's not something humans are used to seeing. Now it's clear to me why you were able to hit the dog so hard. The mutation give you a boost of strength too.
—Do you think that if I talk to her more calmly she will accept me again? I didn't mean to scare her.
—Believe me, she won't understand. In case you didn't notice, I've also mutated, or rather evolved. I already tried it once and they're not ready.
—Oh I see…
—Don't worry Canela, from today on you are officially accepted as a member of the Cat clan, as a member your safety will be guaranteed, and you must also protect all the members as if it were your own life.
—Thank you very much for accepting me, it is truly an honor! I will do my best to learn as quickly as possible.
—Perfect, Canela I'm sorry to stress this, but promise me you won't talk to any humans.
—yes I understand, I promise I won't do it.
—Okay, then let's go, my boys should be back by now. Come on, Canela! —Evan said excitedly.
They both then headed towards the cat's shelter, which turned out to be an abandoned shed.
