Chapter 21:
Synthetic Smiles
Chapter 21: The Unraveling of Truths
The familiar voice that broke the deep silence of the crowd sent a cold shiver down Camille's spine. As complex thoughts and emotions swirled in her mind, her body seemed frozen. She slowly turned, her heart racing. Her eyes focused on a figure that stood like a silhouette among the crowd. In the dim light of the corner, Dr. Selene Myr stood there. Recognized as one of Thaloria's greatest scientists, Dr. Myr calmly stared at Camille. In her eyes was a mixture of knowledge and bitter accumulation, traces of a past filled with moral dilemmas... She was a woman who could control her emotions, but at the same time, she remained connected to her humanity while working in science. Her innocent yet sharp gaze swept across the crowd, forming a mocking smile on her lips. But that smile seemed less reassuring to Camille and more like a threat.
In that moment, there was only one question in Camille's mind: What should I do? But there was no time for an answer, because at that moment, a familiar figure appeared behind Dr. Selene Myr. That name was Aldric Veil, Camille's ally.
Aldric's presence was like a weight spreading through the crowd. People had fallen silent, holding their breath. Camille had been waiting for this moment for a long time; drawing Aldric and Dr. Myr to her side was a monumental step. But it was just as uncertain and dangerous. Though they were supported by Valen Oryn, it wasn't easy to say that they were still on the same side. Valen’s departure from his family and homeland had created deep mistrust in Camille. Moral conflicts were tightening around Camille’s heart. But this moment could be the one that changed everything.
As Aldric took a step toward Camille, his voice was deep, and each word echoed through the crowd. "I didn't expect this much chaos to erupt, Camille," he said, his voice calm yet deep. His words wandered through the crowd like a ghost, catching everyone's attention. Camille’s eyes met Aldric’s determined gaze. For a moment, the world seemed to focus solely on Aldric’s presence. The man continued with his usual calmness: "But maybe this chaos can turn in our favor. We’ll see."
The tension inside Camille grew. Aldric was a gamble; he could either shift the balance in their favor, or he could undermine everything they had worked for. He was a man who played both the enemy and his allies. Gaining his trust would be a dangerous and risky game.
"We need not only the truth, but also a plan," Aldric said, patiently stepping forward to stand before Camille. "I’ve been watching you, Camille. I know how far you can go. And this rebellion is not just about exposing Magnus’s crimes. If you truly want to succeed, you need to plan every move a step ahead."
Camille felt a chill run down her spine. There was truth in Aldric’s words, but there was also uncertainty. Luca took a deep breath and stepped behind Camille, offering his support. "I know you want to help us," he said, his voice trembling slightly. "I’m sure we’ll succeed, but if we fail, your career and life will be at risk. There’s no turning back from this."
Aldric’s smile faded for a brief moment, but then a hint of mockery and amusement replaced it. "Luca, do you remember the first interview I put you through or the day I saved you from Magnus? I’ve always protected you. You’re still in the same situation, trying to stop your little rebellion from being snuffed out before it even begins." He continued without looking away from Camille. "You convinced Valen Oryn through me. And believe me, kid, I’m not planning on dying without watching your fight."
The crowd began murmuring with skepticism. While many seemed close to accepting him, others were still unsure. The tension in the air was palpable. Camille’s mind was racing; was Aldric truly an ally, or was he playing for his own interests? The answer to this question would determine not just Camille’s future, but the future of the entire rebellion.
Before she could respond, a voice echoed from the back of the crowd. "You shouldn’t do this, Camille. Don’t make a hasty decision!" It was Nathalie Grius, one of Camille’s greatest allies. Many saw her as a source of courage and a strategist. She quickly followed with, "We are in this fight together." She calmed the crowd. "Magnus has a large military force because he’s the leader, but if we plan, we can defeat them. We can do more than that."
At that moment, the crowd fell into deep thought. Camille and Luca exchanged glances, silently continuing to stand. No one spoke. Silence enveloped the crowd as thoughts hung in the air. The storm inside Camille had not calmed, but she had to make a decision.
"We need to go to a secret place. We need to discuss and design the plan." Luca spoke these words, looking at Camille for approval. Camille thought for a few seconds and nodded slightly. As the crowd began to disperse, Nathalie and her team moved forward and surrounded Camille. Then, Camille, Luca, Selena, Dr. Selene Myr, and Aldric set off toward a secret base. This base would be where the foundation for a new plan would be laid.
Things were rapidly turning against Magnus.
The people learning the truth had ruined everything. A crime that would no longer remain secret was now out in the open; Camille and Luca’s betrayal had shaken Magnus deeply. The pain of being betrayed by his own daughter burned inside him, but he kept his emotions in check. Quickly regaining his composure, he focused on his work. Fighting his daughter had always been his greatest fear, and now that fear had become a reality.
Magnus called Professor Lionel Krane and asked him to summon other businessmen and scientists for a meeting. This would be a strategic move that would grant him great power in the war. Though Aldric had shaken him militarily, Magnus was determined to find a solution. He called upon Valen Oryn and requested a large military army. He planned to prepare the army and destroy the enemy directly. However, he didn’t want to engage in political conflict. This journey would force him to face his daughter, and Magnus was no longer alone on this path.
Valen Oryn was faced with a difficult choice.
He had to decide whether to follow Magnus’s orders and lead his army or to fight alongside Aldric Veil, who had been his idol for years. Valen was burdened with the weight of great decisions and betrayals from his past. Everything had changed in an instant with the eruption of this war. Things had spiraled out of control, and war was about to begin.
