Chapter 30:
Synthetic Smiles
Chapter 30: Love Transcends Boundaries
As the mist rose from the depths of the earth, it slowly consumed an entire city and the life within it. The air swirled like fog in the vast expanse above Elysius. After destruction and death, Camille and Luca stood together in deep silence. The noise of the war was no longer audible from afar. Everything they were about to leave behind, including the massive structure they had once lived in, had become nothing more than a curtain of sorrow.
Luca, though feeling the pain from the wounds on his body, never once took his eyes off Camille. As Camille pushed the debris from her hands and stood up, there was hesitation in her eyes. Luca stood a few steps ahead, taking deep breaths, waiting for this silent moment to slowly pass. Everything was happening for the last time.
Camille took a few steps toward him. With every step, the gap between them grew smaller. Now, they both wanted to look at each other one last time. Camille’s face bore the marks of exhaustion, yet it also carried a sense of peace. She didn’t know what to feel about Luca.
"You didn’t kill me. You were going to, but you changed your mind, didn’t you?" Camille shouted, not pleased to be alive. "Why?"
"Do you always have to be so smart, Princess?" Luca, writhing in pain, managed a smile. "When we first met, I planned to kill you along with Magnus. You were the daughter of the man who ruined our lives. In my eyes, you didn’t deserve to live. But after everything we’ve been through together, my view changed a little." As Luca lay on the ground, covered in blood, he tried to straighten his posture. "Your innocence and the sweet, warming smile on your face can even affect someone like me, whose heart is frozen. When I saw what kind of person you really were, my opinion shifted." But at that moment, he realized he was fighting the greatest battle of his life. Not in his mind, but in his heart. "I fell in love with you, Camille. I really did." Luca's expression grew serious. "I know I’ve been lying to you from the start, and you might not believe me, but the only thing that was real was my love for you. It’s hard for someone like me to say this, but those are the facts. And I didn’t want to kill the person I loved by poisoning them. I couldn’t stand the thought of you hating me, so I wanted to explain myself with a note. That’s why I left you one. I knew you wouldn’t let me kill your father, but it had to be done. He killed all the rares for himself and would have continued killing the rest. It had to be done. I’m sorry."
At the end of this long speech, Camille couldn’t hold back her tears. She started crying. She didn’t know what to believe anymore and was overwhelmed. Her father, her lover, Sarah, and those closest to her had all betrayed her. Now, the man she loved was saying these lies were true. But there was still the possibility that it could all be a lie. Camille needed to think, but time was running out. Soldiers were coming.
Camille continued to think deeply. "Sometimes, accepting someone's lies is less painful than believing them. But sometimes, knowing the truth doesn’t allow any lie to take its place."
There was once a dialogue between them, the beginning of their story; those first conversations, the place they dreamed of. Now, they stood in the middle of a decision. After all, at the end of everything, there was a journey. One was the place where everything ended; the other, where it all began.
"Everything is ending," Luca said, his voice trembling. "But leaving with you... leaving this world... to somewhere else, maybe... to start anew from the beginning."
"I would stay forever if I had to," she whispered, "I want you to come with me, Luca. The end of everything can be together, sometimes…"
Luca, biting his lip, lowered his head. As much as his heart ached at her words, part of him wanted to believe it. Yes, leaving the world... but with Camille.
They were so close, yet neither took a step forward or backward. But the distance between them wasn’t the biggest obstacle. For a moment, it seemed like they would embrace each other. But the tension from the shattered world around them, the pain, held them back from holding each other. The war had become a wound in their hearts, but even those wounds had brought them closer.
"Being with you is like finding my true identity. When we're together, no matter how small the world seems, it feels like there are no boundaries," Luca said, his voice fragile. "But giving up on the world... that’s the end. Maybe it has a meaning. I still don’t know."
Camille took a deep breath and closed her eyes. "We made this decision together," she said. "There’s a void inside me, but… this void isn’t searching for you. This void, in fact, is waiting for me."
Luca’s heart raced like a train coming off its tracks. Camille’s words felt like a revolution within him. "Where do you want to go?" he asked, his words coming slowly.
Camille tilted her head slightly. "There’s a place. A place we don’t know, but we can feel. Maybe this is the new beginning. Time and space are not our boundaries."
Luca slowly raised his eyes to look at Camille. In the depths of her eyes, there was something—a light that was nearly gone, but somehow could still return to the beginning of everything. "Then I believe in you," he said. "And with you... I will discover that place."
But at that moment, they were shaken by explosions. Camille, momentarily frozen, turned her head. "What was that?" she asked, fear and surprise in her voice.
Another explosion echoed, and the world trembled once more. But this time, it was not just physical destruction—it was a spiritual collapse. As the tunnel they were in shook again, they felt that time had come to an end for them. Another explosion sounded, and silence was replaced by pain. Aldric’s soldiers had arrived.
"Aldric, sir," came the voice of his soldier. "An explosion occurred in the area where Camille was, but a spacecraft from that section is on its way to Earth. We can’t identify who is inside…"
Silence. Camille and Luca turned to look at each other, but this time, they pulled away. A decision had been made, but it hadn’t been fully revealed yet.
Luca took one last look at Camille and took a deep breath. "An eternal journey begins," he said, but even though his voice was calm, he couldn’t suppress the gloom in his heart. "Just like we promised…"
The capsule that disappeared from their sight would take them on a journey that would change them forever. Though they didn’t know it, they sensed that the moment they came together marked both the end and the beginning of everything. The capsule drifted away, disappearing from view. As Camille and Luca made their way toward the world, all boundaries had been erased.
Years later, Camille's name was still remembered in Elysius as the SAVIOR. She had a statue in the center of Elysius that everyone passing by would salute. Camille became the legend of the new world.
