Chapter 1:
The Prince likes his thief
Harvi hurriedly jammed plates and cups of gold into her bag in the silence of the night. She looked around paranoid at the uncompromisingly luxurious dining hall. The jade walls were lined with intricate carvings of gold floral patterns and there were pillars of crimson with similar gold patterns that went up to the tall ceiling. The ceiling flaunted a huge chandelier shaped like a flower.
After being enamored, she got back to what she came to do. She couldn't afford to get caught now, not when she was this close to getting what she had always dreamed of. That should be all I need. She slowly picked up one last plate, but it slips from her grasp and falls. Ting Ting Clang!!
"Who's there!" A scream comes from the balcony, the only entry and exit that Harvi could access. Her mind raced. What should I do, I probably can't take a guard in a fight, and there's no other place to escape or hide. She quickly came up with an idea that might work.
"I'm a maid! I'm sorry I couldn't fall asleep, so I was just taking in the beauty of this palace, I'll go back now, and I apologise for any trouble."
"A maid huh? How did you get in here? This area is heavily guarded, and do maids have keys to these rooms?"
"As expected of a guard of the kingdom, you don't take any chances. Yes, this place is heavily guarded, but the guards know me and us maids do have the key to this and many other valuable rooms."
She slowly unpacked her bag and put the plates and cups back to their original places without making a sound, there was no light other than the moon, the room was too dark for the guard to see her from the balcony.
"What's your name?" The guard asks.
"I'm Harini, and whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?" She continues unpacking.
"I'm Karthik"
"That's definitely a name that stands out." She laughs
"Can you come here for a second Harini?" She finished unpacking, put the bag in her pocket and approached him. "I'm on my way"
If she got outed by her plain black outfit or her story or by the guard knowing all the maids and not a Harini, she would have to use her knife to try and attack him, or run away. As she got closer she realised he was wearing he was wearing a purple plain sherwani that was definitely not guards’ clothing. She also saw that he wasn't facing directly at her. "Who are you?" Harvi asked. He faces her
"I'm Karthik as i've said."
"You know that's not what I meant sir, are you royalty?" Harvi interrogates. Karthik sighs
"I'm the Karthik. Blind prince. Heir to the Rajanan empire." He says plainly. Harvi's heart fell as she regretted her stab at his name. She got on her knees. "Please forgive my brashness, I hope you'll forgive me your majesty." She was praying she could get out of this situation safely. Royals are known to be irrational
Karthik gestured her to get up. "Alright I forgive you, well now that you have found me out, and you don't have anything else to do, can you help me out here for a bit?"
"of course what assistance do u require?" Harvi now stands directly in front of him and sees his gold ring embroided with deep blue gems. They must be expensive, she thought. "Promise me you won't judge?"
"I would never judge you my prince." Harvi replies in a diligent manner. Karthick sighs.
"Ok, if you tell a soul you'll be hanged alright."
"I wouldn't dare to do so." Harvi was getting tired of this act, she wished he would get to the point so she could leave and plan another heist.
"Alright, it's a bit embarassing, but I heard about these 'stars' that are these shining, glamorous, beaughtiful specks of light on the sky at night. It mesmerised me, but well, I obviously can't see them."
"So tell me Harini, do you see the stars tonight? And if so, what do they look like?" Harini looked up to see the black sky illuminated by thousands of stars, it was arguably a prettier view than the hall. “The sky is full of these beautiful stars your majesty, it’s a shame-“
“People are drawn to things for various reasons, be it they find it interesting, they enjoy doing it, they want said type of life,” Karthik interrupted, “I’m not sure why but these stars are one of the only things that fascinate me, yet they cannot even be seen by me, it’s a really unfunny joke. So please, drop the formality I am but curious about these things.”
Harvi collects herself. "The sky is filled with these stars,” she says, “and they are as you describe them, they each are really small and bright. I don't really know how else to decribe them to someone who has never seen before."
"Describe the emotions you feel looking at them, after all, visual or auditory or touch senses in the end result in the same thing. Giving an emotion. Be it pain, or soothing, or something more complex." Harvi looked back up to the sky. "Well, to me it brings a feeling of peacefulness, They are so out of reach, yet still shining bright. They are things us humans will never reach or maybe ever understand, but we still get to enjoy the shimmering, luminescent shine of white splattered across the night sky. If you can truly grasp it's beauty, perhaps there's no need to ask for more.”
"Hmm so it's pleasing to look at, and is peaceful to you. Well my father said it motivated him to learn more of the world as they are so full of mysteries. Everyone may have their different views I suppose." Harvi wondered why he was so interested in the stars, not many people look at them regularly or feel anything from them. "Well, I'm getting a bit tired, thank you for your company, but I'll head back for now." Harvi said as she slowly walked towards the railing of the balcony to silently escape, but then Karthik suddenly grabs her hand.
"Wait. Tomorrow is the full moon, I want you to come describe it to me, in a more visual sense as well. I will reward you for your time. I really enjoyed your interpretation of the stars, I want to hear your thoughts on other things as well." Harvi was all for it if there's a reward, even their change is worth fortunes to her. But she was still shocked that he had his wrist wrapped around her arm. "Alright, I'll look forward to it, but don't expect much, I am but a maid." Harvi chucked nervously. "I'll look forward to it too." Karthik said as he freed her hand. Harvi slowly resumed her escape, and climbs down the rope she set up from the balcony to the floor. This left Karthik incredibly perplexed as to how she disappeared, and even more so, curious about her.
