Chapter 2:
The other side of the end
65-year-old Rennie, Lien’s grandfather, walked quickly down the long corridor of the research center where he worked. It was the fourth day since the appearance of Rebirth. Rennie reached the door, to which he had hurried, opened it and found himself in a room filled with computers. The lights were turned off, and the room was illuminated by bright monitors.
Each computer was performing calculations. And behind one of them sat Eric. He was 30 years old and specialized in data collection and analysis.
Rennie approached the computer where Eric was sitting and looked closely at the graphs displayed there.
- “Nothing has changed,” - Eric answered calmly. He was always stingy with emotions. And even the situation in which all of humanity was intoxicated did not change this. – “Soon the end will come for all of us…”
- “So, radical steps, it’s only a matter of time.”
Eric looked thoughtfully at Rennie and smiled slightly.
- “Something interesting is being prepared?”
Rennie looked at Eric and did not answer him.
When Rennie left the research center, he headed to the car that was waiting for him in front of the entrance. Rennie opened the car door and got into the back seat. The driver, who was sitting behind the wheel, moved forward. And next to Rennie, Kelis sat silently.
Kelis was the head of the research center. For 50 years of his life, he managed to head this center and become one of the most respected people in the country.
Rennie's phone rang. He looked at it. It was Lian calling him. However, Rennie could not answer him and hung up.
- “We have no way out. None of us have,” - Kelis stated confidently and calmly.
- “So, the technologies of disappeared civilizations?” - asked Rennie.
- “No technology that we have invented during our existence will solve this problem.”
Rennie looked up at the sky, at the Rebirth.
- “Maybe if we had at least 500 more years, we could create something that would save us…” - Kelis mused. – “Soon we will be at the airport.”
Rennie clutched his heart, which was starting to hurt.
Kelis looked at Rennie.
- “Are you okay?” - Kelis asked anxiously.
Rennie’s heart stopped hurting.
- “Yes. Everything is fine now,” - answered Rennie.
Rennie's sick heart was making itself felt. However, Rennie had no opportunity to devote time to his health. Right now, he and Kelis were heading to a meeting of representatives of all the countries of the world, at which the future fate of the Earth would be decided.
- "So, our main task is to prove that the technology that is in our hands can save the world. At the same time, we cannot reveal anything about it yet," - Rennie said.
- "Approximately so," - answered Kelis, as if he had kept quiet about something.
Rennie looked thoughtfully at Kelis. He did not know what to expect from the meeting. But, he knew that the fate of the world would be decided at it.
All the way to the meeting place, which was in cars, a plane and a taxi, Rennie spent looking at his working papers or simply sleeping to gain some strength.
And so, Rennie and Kelis finally reached the building where the meeting of all the countries of the world was being held. The presidents of all the countries sent several representatives who were to decide together how to avoid the Rebirth.
Entering the main room where the meeting was to take place, Rennie took a seat on the podium. The assistants of the main representative, this was the role of the persons sitting on the rostrum. And Rennie had this role. The main role was played by those who sat at the round negotiating table in the middle of the room.
Kelis was one of those who sat at this table. Along with him, other key representatives from each country sat at the table.
When everyone had taken their seats, a complete silence fell over the room, filled with two hundred people. Everyone, holding their breath, waited to see who would speak first. Although it didn’t matter who did, it was important that the conversation went in the right direction.
And the dialogue began.
- "We have all gathered here to find a way to resolve the situation that has befallen all nations. Is there a state among us who could offer a solution?" - said the representative of one of the states, who wanted the best solution for everyone.
And silence reigned again. No one had anything to say. No one had any solution. Some people averted their eyes, realizing that they had nothing to offer, and some looked at others, seeking salvation from them. However, there were those who had something to say.
- “No matter how much we hope, no one will offer a perfect solution. Stop wasting our precious time, and let's move on to the issue that should be raised here,” - said in a rude tone an impulsive representative, who himself did not dare to raise the main issue.
- “And what kind of question is this?” - another representative asked teasingly. She decided to play on the impulsiveness of the representative she had addressed. And it worked.
- “Technologies of disappeared civilizations!” - said the impulsive representative, angrily banging on the table. - “Technologies that some of the countries that are here are hiding!”.
Discussions began in the hall. Rennie watched as everyone present began to discuss what the impulsive representative had said.
- “I ask for silence!” - one of the representatives at the table loudly declared into the microphone.
Silence reigned in the hall again. And the representative who took the floor continued. – “I agree. We do not have time for secrets. Some countries really have preserved technologies of civilizations that disappeared several thousand years ago.”
The hall was again filled with discussions. The fact is that some countries did not have the technologies of the past found. And for them, until this moment, the existence of such technologies, hidden somewhere in the world, remained only rumors.
The hall quickly fell silent to hear the continuation of the conversation at the table.
The representative who took the floor continued again. – “Now, all countries that do not have such technologies should understand something. We have hidden these technologies because we do not know all their secrets. We do not know what they are capable of. We are afraid of them. And, we have decided to classify them and restrict access to them.”
- “But now is the time to use them!” - replied the impulsive representative.
- “I completely agree,” - confidently intervened in the discussion Kelis. – “The research that we have managed to conduct suggests that these technologies have a chance to save humanity. And it is on their use that we should focus our discussion.”
Kelis was silent for a few seconds. Everyone present in the hall listened attentively to Kelis.
- “Therefore, I propose a technology that our country has. It can save not only humanity, but also our planet!”
The hall was again filled with discussions. And again he quickly fell silent to continue listening.
- "So, here and now, I officially declare that we are ready to share our technology with the whole world in exchange for our country's membership in the "Big Ten Association", participation in the vote on the "International Trade Council", full integration with the trade networks and economic alliances of all the countries present here. And also ensuring investments in the development of our biotechnologies!"
The hall was filled with fierce discussions and discontent. And Rennie sat shocked and looked at Kelis, fearfully considering what he had said.
- "What are you doing?"
