Chapter 7:
The In-Between
Before the lecture started the following day in drama class, Hayden went over to Trent at his desk. Trent was sitting there talking to Loren. Loren was wearing a purple sweater and matching skirt, while he was wearing his typical basketball shirt and baggy shorts. "So...you like Loren?" was the final thing Hayden had said to Trent the previous evening after they had parted ways with the girls. Trent had cursed at him, his cheeks red in the process. Now that he was getting close to Trent's desk, Hayden could hardly hear what Trent was saying.
"...could attend my upcoming basketball game." Trent remarked, "I need someone to support me from the stands."
With a playful tone, Loren rolled her eyes. "Please, there are lots of basketball fans who will support you, especially the cheerleaders." As she continued, "No, the cheerleaders mostly cheer for Sebastian," her lighthearted manner changed to one of seriousness. You are the only female I want cheering me on from the stands. Loren's cheeks flashed with a deep crimson as Trent spoke in a seductive manner.
With a lighthearted and playful tone, Hayden said, "Wow, I never knew you were Mr. Casanova."
"Hayden!" Trent yelled, a hint of anxiety in his voice. "You weren't there, I noticed."
With a smile, Hayden said, "I'm part ninja." "When did you begin referring to me as Hayden?"
"That's when—ever since I got a girlfriend," Trent said, his face softening.
"Are you now formally announcing it?" With real amazement, Hayden inquired. He anticipated where this would go after their clumsy make-out session in the back seat the night before.
With conviction, Loren put her arms around Trent's neck and said, "Yeah, we decided to deny our love no longer."
With a dry tone, Hayden remarked, "That's deep."
"Stupid!" Loren gave him a false scowl and scoffed.
At that moment, Emily hurried in the door as the bell rang. She gave Hayden a small grin and went to her chair. After giving Trent a short peck on the cheek, Loren took a seat next to her. As Mrs. O'Brien came in to start the class, Hayden sat down next Trent.
"All right, pupils! With a strong, authoritative voice, Mrs. O'Brien declared, "You will be performing the skits you have written and practiced over the last few days." Hayden was a little nervous because he and Emily had fallen further behind the other pupils and had only practiced a little the day before. She questioned the class, "Who wants to go first?" Trent held up his hand in a matter of seconds.
"Oh, Trent! Fantastic! Who is your partner now? Mrs. O'Brien asked in an anticipatory tone. She had announced at the beginning of the lesson that an athlete would be the first volunteer.
“Loren,” said Trent. Just as expected, Loren got up and walked confidently to the front of the room, Trent trailing closely behind.
"What's your skit called?" Mrs. O'Brien said, taking a seat at the big mahogany desk at the rear of the room.
Trent said, "A parody of Romeo and Juliet." Given Trent's propensity to act like the class clown, a few students chuckled, so this should be funny.
With her palm on her forehead, Mrs. O'Brien said, "This should be interesting." Trent's court jester antics, which weren't always suitable for school, were well known to her.
"Oh, Romeo, Romeo! My my Romeo, where are you? The students burst out laughing as Loren opened with a melodramatic, theatrically inspired voice.
"Here, my lovely maiden!" As he walked toward her, Trent stumbled awkwardly and yelled. The class burst out laughing.
"Is that you? My father despises Montagues, and you're one of them. Given that our opposing families have been at odds for some time, how can we ever be together? Loren grasped her chest and pleaded in a panicked tone.
Trent dropped to his knees, his face serious. He answered, "I don't know," with such a lack of knowledge that the class burst out laughing once more. However, I am aware that no love is as pure as ours! Juliet, marry me!
"All right!" With a squeal, Loren jumped into Trent's embrace. Cheers broke out in the classroom.
"Hold on... What should we do regarding my parents? She looked up at him and inquired, her voice suddenly innocent.
"Fuck them! Hoe, I'm taking you to bed! The class went into hysterics as Trent made a daring declaration. Taking Loren in his arms, Trent rushed after her. Mrs. O'Brien asked for additional volunteers after the two lovers had gone back to their seats and the laughter had stopped. Nobody put up their hand.
"Anyone? Okay, then. Why don't you select the following pair to present, Trent? Mrs. O'Brien recommended.
"Hayden and Emily," Trent said without hesitation.
After giving him a fierce look, Hayden got up and went to the front of the room to meet Emily. They were almost ready to start their routine when she gave him a hesitant, hollow smile.
Emily spoke in a serious, emotionally charged voice, "Peter, I have to tell you something."
"Baby, what is it?" With a tentative tone, Hayden inquired. He ignored the snickers from some of the jocks.
Emily inhaled deeply as her voice faltered a little. It's incredibly difficult to express this. and I don't think you'll accept it.”
"What is it? As per the script, he responded in a bewildered tone, "You can tell me, Adele."
Her eyes fell to the ground as she admitted, "I'm not from your world."
"Wha—what are you saying?" As required by the screenplay, he stumbled and pretended to remain silent.
"Peter... "I'm a Dark Fairy," she confessed in a somber tone. The audience sent out a few gasps. This proved to be very popular with the romantic fantasy pupils.
He raised his voice in mock disbelief and said, "What?"
I'm a Dark Fairy. Emily went on, her tone steady despite the gravity of her words: "I know you think I'm probably insane, but I'm telling you the truth."
"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?" In order to portray the character's astonishment, he followed the script and questioned in a shaky voice.
Emily looked into his eyes and said, "I was afraid of what you would think of me," even though her words weren't in the script.
But Adele, how could you lie? "We've been married for three years!" he said, following the script even if she deviated from it. The audience let out more gasps.
"I apologize," she muttered, her eyes regretfully falling to the ground.
"That's too late at this point! "Good riddance!" he shot back, moving sharply away.
As the class erupted in cheers, Emily took hold of his arm, twirled him around, and they embraced each other. They took their bows and parted ways. Loren gave them two enthusiastic thumbs up, and Trent gave Hayden an arrogant smile. Hayden noticed Sebastian watching them suspiciously from his chair.
"Outstanding performance! Bravo! Mrs. O'Brien gave enthusiastic compliments.
As the normal buzz of the class restored, they went back to their seats.
Trent gave Hayden a clap on the shoulder after class and remarked, "Nice work, dude!"
Hayden said, "Thanks," as Sebastian walked up.
Sebastian gave him a fist bump and remarked, "Dude, that was pretty sick."
Hayden acknowledged with a nod, but he felt anxious all of a sudden.
Sebastian smirked and said, "Even better, you have that Emily off your back now."
Trying to sound informal, Hayden shrugged. "She's not that horrible."
"You would be aware, wouldn't you?" Sebastian's voice had a harsh edge.
"What?" Unexpectedly, Hayden inquired.
Sebastian's tone was cold as he stated, "I know you two went on a double date with them." Then there was complete quiet.
"So?" Trent interrupted, avoiding the snaky green eyes of Sebastian.
"All right? They will destroy your reputations! Would you like that? Sebastian raised his voice in challenge.
"Whoa, man. "Don't disparage Loren," Trent said in a defensive tone.
Perhaps Loren isn't a big issue, but Hayden "The most despised girl at school is Emily," Sebastian insisted.
"She isn't!" Hayden objected, his temper erupting.
Any athlete will tell you that she makes us all uncomfortable. She intimidates the nerds, ask them. The drug users are all wary of her, so you might as well ask them. Sebastian explained, his voice brimming with contempt, "She's not like us, H.O.W.
Despite the force of Sebastian's comments, Hayden was able to reply. In contrast to you zombies who maintain the status quo, she at least has her own individuality, he said bluntly.
Refusing to turn around, he pivoted on his heel and stormed off.
“Wow!” Trent stepped next to him while Sebastian called after him.
Hayden complained and hurried out the door, saying, "I'm not H.O.W." This was certainly a change of pace.
