Chapter 1:
Lost dog
Jax's point of view for chapter two.
Deer! I want to play! They run fast! I run fast! Zoom! Mom look how fast I ruuuuuun!
I look around. Mom? Oooo what's that smell? Dead squirrel, must roll on it! I smell fabulous. I found deer poop! Must roll after a nibble. Delish! Mom yells at me when I eat it though but she's not here. I wonder where mom is. What's that moving over there?
A light blonde wolf makes his way out of the shadows. The full moon glows bright.
"Get back! I will protect my mommy!" I growl.
"Yea? The one you ran away from?" He says getting closer to me.
"I didn't..." I whimper. I'm scared. I feel a trickle come out of me while I shake.
"Come on. Let's get you out of these woods and to your mom. After a bath though, she will be upset if you don't smell decent." He turns and starts padding off.
"I smell wonderful! No bath!" I bark back.
He looks over his shoulder at me.
"Fine!" I grumble back and follow the wolf.
"Good boy." He says.
"Good boy?! My mommy says I'm the bestest boy." I prance with pride.
"Bestest boys don't leave their mommy's crying in the woods while they are off having fun." The wolf states.
What he says hits my gut hard. Almost as hard as what dad use to kick. I didn't like dad. He hurt my mommy and me.
"She was calling for you for hours. I couldn't get any sleep so I lead my uncle to her to take her home. Then I find you happy as a clam." He side eyes me.
"Is mom okay?" I whimper.
"She's fine outside of upset over you." He says. We cross over a road and walk up to a house.
"This isn't my house." I say.
"I need to wait til morning to change back to human. I can't bathe you as a wolf and certainly can not walk up to your mom like this." He states. He leads the way to a barn behind the house.
He curls up on the straw inside. I look around at the trees outside.
"You're going to come here and lay down." He says.
I go to him and lay with him. I fall asleep.
I wake up while sprawled out on my back. I sneeze when I sit upright. That's when I see the big guy standing there in jeans.
"Who are you!?" I bark.
He looks at me with a are you serious face. "Calm down it's me."
He's the wolf!? How he do that?!
"Come on. Let's get you bathed." He says.
"No bath!" I protest.
"I said come." The authority in his voice was firm yet gentle.
So I follow him to the house. We get inside and it's like the groomers place I went to once. After the trip dad hurt mom bad. She cried lots. Something about spending too much money.
"I don't want mom hurt." I cower in the corner.
"What?" His head snaps toward me. He sits on the floor aways from me. "Jax tell me what's going on."
"Mommy got hurt after she took me to one of these places. I don't want her hurt." I whimper more.
"Who hurt her?" His face is dark and kinda scary.
"My dad. Mom packed bags one day and said we won't see him again but... she cries at night." I lay down in the corner sad.
"So you haven't seen dad in awhile?" He asks.
"Not at this new house." I reply.
He sits as if lost in thought.
"Did I do bad?" I ask.
"No Jax. You did good. You were so brave. Come here I want to teach you something." He pats the ground. I crawl over to him.
"You can sit or stand but you need to learn to howl." He says.
"Why?" I tilt my head.
"To protect your mom. If you howl I can come help you two." He says.
"Protect mommy!? I want to protect mommy!" I get up eagerly for his lesson.
He makes me smell "pretty" for mommy with a bath. He taught me to howl while in the bath and on the drying table. I also told him how good my moms cooking is and how nice she is. Now I'm sitting on another table while he brushes me.
"Are you going to be my new dad?" I ask. I like this guy.
"From everything you told me, Katie sounds like a wonderful girl. Maybe I will try to be your dad but your mom also has to be willing to be with me." He says.
"She will like you! She says she likes dogs over people. And you're part dog! She will like you." I stand tall for my new dad.
"Jax, you're something." Says the man shaking his head. "Let's get you home."
He walks me home and my mommy hugs me so tight when she sees me.
"Tell her your part dog!" I whimper to dad.
He keeps talking to mom without saying he is part dog. What is wrong with you! What's this about a date? What's a date? Now he brought up cooking. Yes cooking! Mom's cooking is the best! Then he leaves.
"Jax you like him?" My mom asks.
"Yes! I love him! You like him right? He's my new dad right?" I bark back to my mom.
"Alright. Alright. You just got walked but let's go for another." She says.
I sit down waiting for her to hook my leash up. I grumble my madness that she can't understand me like dad.
"Looks like I need to bake you some more treats today." Mom says searching her coat pockets.
"Treats!?" I'm happy. So I wag my butt as fast as I can with my tail.
That's the start of the story of the lost dog I found under the full moon became my dad.
