Chapter 19:

The Last Escape

No Place No Home

The moment Jason heard the screech, he knew.

They aren’t getting out of here without a fight.

The sound isn’t human. It is something else. Something that had adapted to the tunnels, something that had been waiting.

Lexi had her knife out. Jason raised his gun. Ryan clutched the flashlight, his hands shaking.

And then.. the light above them flickered.

Jason’s pulse hammered in his ears.

From the far end of the platform, shadows shifted. Movement.. too fast. Too many.

Then.. the clicking again. Louder. Closer. Surrounding them.

Jason grabbed Ryan and shoved him behind an overturned bench. “Stay down. Don’t move.”

Lexi positioned herself at Jason’s side. “How many?”

Jason’s grip tightened on his gun. “Too many.”

The first creature came into view.

It crawled out of the darkness, its body half-hidden by the ruined station walls. Its skin is pale, almost translucent, like something that had never seen the sun. Its limbs are too long, its fingers tipped with curved claws.

Its eyes.. if they could even be called eyes.. are nothing but hollow, black sockets.

Ryan stifled a gasp.

The thing turned toward them, its head twitching, its mouth opening slightly.. revealing rows of needle-like teeth.

Lexi exhaled. “That’s not just a lizard.”

Jason’s jaw clenched. She is right.

This thing had once been human.

And now.. it isn’t.

Trapped

The thing took a slow, shuffling step forward. The clicking grew louder.

Then Jason realized.. there is more than one.

Shapes moved in the shadows. Claws scraped against the tiled floor. The station is infested.

They had walked straight into a nest.

Jason barely had time to react before the first one lunged.

BANG.

Jason fired.. the bullet hit center mass. The creature staggered.. but didn’t go down.

It screeched, thrashing violently, before launching forward again. Faster. More aggressive.

Lexi moved first. Her knife flashed. She ducked low, slashing across its side. Black, tar-like blood spilled onto the floor.

Jason fired again.. this time at the head.

The creature collapsed.

For a second, there is silence.

Then.. the whole station erupted.

Screeches filled the air. More of them, crawling out from every shadow.

Ryan grabbed Jason’s arm. “We have to run!”

Jason scanned the area.. but there is nowhere to go.

Lexi’s voice is sharp. “Tracks! The old rail tunnels!”

Jason turned.. she is right.

There is an opening in the station wall where the train tracks led deeper underground. It is risky.. they had no idea where it led.

But staying here meant death.

Jason grabbed Ryan. “Move!”

The Tunnel Descent

They sprinted across the station, jumping down onto the rusted train tracks. The tunnel ahead is pure darkness.

Lexi flicked on her flashlight. “Go, go, go!”

Behind them, the creatures followed.

They scrambled down from the platform, some crawling on all fours, their claws scratching against the metal rails. Their screeches echoed through the tunnel.

Jason ran faster. His lungs burned. His legs ached. But he didn’t stop.

Lexi is ahead of him, leading the way. Ryan is beside him, struggling to keep up.

The ground trembled.

Jason’s stomach twisted. Something is coming.

Not just from behind.. but ahead.

Lexi skidded to a stop. Her flashlight caught movement in the distance.

Another one. Bigger.

Blocking the tunnel.

Jason gritted his teeth. “We’re trapped.”

Final Stand

Jason raised his gun. Lexi tightened her grip on her knife.

Ryan backed up, his breathing shaky. “We can’t fight them all.”

Jason knew he is right. There are too many.

And yet.. they had no choice.

The creatures from behind closed in. The massive figure ahead lurched forward.

Jason’s grip on his weapon steadied. If this is the end, he isn’t going down without a fight.

He exhaled. “Lexi?”

She nodded. “I’m with you.”

Ryan swallowed hard. He is scared. But he isn’t running.

Jason pulled the trigger.

And the tunnel exploded into chaos.

The tunnel is a battlefield.

Gunfire echoed off the walls, mixing with the inhuman screeches of the creatures. Jason’s arms burned as he fired shot after shot, but they just kept coming. Their hollow eyes locked onto him with hunger, their clawed limbs twitching, their bodies moving in unnatural jerks.

Lexi moved with deadly precision. Her knife slashed through rotting flesh, carving deep into the things that lunged at her. She isn’t fighting to win.. she is fighting to survive.

Ryan pressed himself against the tunnel wall, gripping the old metal flashlight like a weapon. He had no bullets, no knife.. but he isn’t useless. When a creature came too close, he swung the flashlight as hard as he could, cracking it against its skull.

It barely slowed the monster down.

Jason saw it just in time. He turned and fired.. the bullet struck the creature in the side of the head. It staggered, then crumpled to the ground.

Ryan panted. “That is too close.”

Jason didn’t answer. He is running out of ammo.

And then.. the tunnel trembled.

The massive figure blocking their escape lurched forward.

Jason had never seen anything like it.

It had once been human.. but now, it is something else entirely.

Its body is swollen, grotesque, its arms unnaturally long, fingers twisted into jagged claws. Its face.. or what is left of it.. is stretched, warped. Its mouth had split apart into three separate jaws, each filled with needle-like teeth. Black, tar-like saliva dripped from its lips.

Lexi’s grip on her knife tightened. “We are so dead.”

The thing let out a sound.. a deep, gurgling growl.

And then.. it charged.

The Collapse

Jason barely had time to react. He shoved Ryan aside just as the massive creature swung its arm.. a blur of claws and raw strength. The tunnel wall shook from the impact.

Lexi darted around it, knife flashing. She went for the legs.. a deep cut, a quick retreat.

The thing barely seemed to notice.

Jason fired.. three, four, five shots. Each one hit center mass.

It didn’t even flinch.

Ryan scrambled to his feet, his breathing ragged. “Bullets aren’t working!”

Jason knew. They needed another plan.. fast.

And then.. he saw it.

Above them, the tunnel’s old support beams are cracked.

Weak.

Jason’s mind worked fast. If they could bring them down, they might be able to bury the creatures.. at least long enough to escape.

But doing that meant one thing.

They might be buried, too.

He turned to Lexi. “The supports. We bring the tunnel down.”

She followed his gaze.. understood immediately.

She hesitated for only a second. Then.. she nodded.

Jason grabbed Ryan’s arm. “Get ready to run.”

Ryan’s eyes widened. “What?”

Jason didn’t wait. He raised his gun and fired.

Not at the creature.

At the supports.
