Chapter 1:
Eclipse of the infinite
The sky burned.
Crimson streaks painted the heavens as the sun dipped beneath the horizon, only to halt, suspended in twilight. The city of Zenithspire stood frozen beneath the unnatural dusk, its towering spires casting jagged shadows across the streets. The people below whispered of omens and cursed stars, eyes drawn upwards as darkness crept across the sun.
At the city’s edge, a boy stood alone.
Kairos clutched his head, heart pounding against his ribs. The pain was unbearable — molten fire searing through his veins, his vision swimming with shadows and flame. He dropped to his knees in the alley, fingers digging into the cracked stone as the world twisted around him. The air grew heavy, thick with power.
“What’s… happening to me?”
A deafening crack split the air, and the sky darkened completely. The Eclipse had begun.
From the shadows, they came.
Figures cloaked in obsidian armor swept through the streets. The Harbingers — rogue Ascendants, sworn to chaos. Their leader, a towering figure wreathed in violet flame, strode forward. His voice rumbled like thunder.
“Find the boy.”
Kairos stumbled to his feet, heart racing. The shadows warped, and before he could react, a Harbinger lunged. Black steel sang through the air. Instinct took over.
His body moved.
Flames erupted around him, black and violet, twisting and writhing like living shadows. The ground cracked beneath his feet. In a blur, he sidestepped the blade and thrust his hand forward — and the world shattered.
A pillar of black fire roared into the sky, engulfing the Harbinger in its fury. The city trembled. When the flames faded, only ash remained.
Kairos gasped, staring at his hands. The black fire still danced along his fingers, cold and alien. His body shook, but it wasn’t from fear. It was from the power. He could feel it coursing through him — ancient, destructive, and hungry.
Footsteps echoed behind him.
“Impressive.”
Kairos spun around, flames flaring — only to see a woman in a midnight cloak. Her silver hair cascaded over her shoulders, eyes glowing with cold intensity. She stepped forward, each movement graceful, deliberate.
“I am Lyra.” Her voice was calm, almost curious. “The Eclipse Flame… I never thought I’d witness its rebirth.”
Kairos staggered back, but Lyra raised her hand. The shadows around her twisted and parted, revealing a symbol etched into her palm — the mark of the Mirage Clan.
“You’re not the first to wield that power,” she continued. “But you might be the last.”
Before Kairos could speak, the ground trembled once more. Far above, the sky split open. The Eclipse reached its zenith, and in that moment, Kairos understood: something had awoken.
Something ancient.
And it was watching him.
As the shadows closed in once more, Kairos took a deep breath and clenched his fists. The flames flickered along his skin, and for the first time, he didn’t fight it.
He embraced it.
The Ascendant’s Awakening had begun.
