Chapter 9:
The Bridge of Love Built by H&H
Hikaru kept his cool until he was sure that the group of guys really didn't intend to continue with some of their evil intentions. Then it was as if all the air had been knocked out of him, so he fell heavily into the chair opposite the girl. He couldn't look her in the eye, so he put his head on the table and covered it with his hands.
Hortensja was in quite a shock. Her cheeks were also burning, and her heart was pounding as if it were about to jump onto the table and hop around in circles with happiness. The sentence that Hikaru had said still rang in her ears. She felt that he had included sincere feelings and a desire to stand up for her, and it all sounded so natural and obvious. There was no jealousy or emphasis on ownership in it, as if Kamil had said the same words.
She had heard it so many times and knew that the only message behind it was that the girl was mine and that you shouldn't even look at her. Besides, it was one of the few arguments her ex used to convince her of what he thought she should or shouldn't do. Depending on the specific situation, he would intertwine it with the explanation that he was her boyfriend, and the longer their relationship lasted, the more often he used violence. It struck her how much those few words differed from each other, how now it gave her a sense of security, and before it only had set off a red flag in her head that she ignored.
The girl gently jabbed Hikaru's hand with her finger. She remembered that when she was a child, her parents frequently joked that in love, there was nothing to decide, because the heart would do its own thing anyway, and life would usually set itself up in defiance. The Japanese finally dared to look at her, and they smiled at each other. Hortensja had the impression that her parents would definitely like him and wouldn't even protest if she decided to stay with him at the end of the world. But would they have met at all then? Did she have anything that would have made her come to Japan if not for that escape? She didn't know, but she decided to trust fate and wanted to believe that maybe her parents watching over her had also put in their two cents and pushed her to such a radical step.
“I'm sorry, but I wanted them to leave you alone and…” Hikaru started to explain, but the girl interrupted him.
“I have to thank you first. You saved me, and that's all that matters to me.” She grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly.
“Of course, I didn't mean that I was really your boyfriend. I would like to, but…”
“Okay.”
“Okay?” The young man couldn't get over his shock.
“Mhm.” Hortensja still didn't let go of his hand. “Since you said it out loud, it can stay that way.”
What was going on in Hikaru's head during this short conversation could be described as chaos. He didn't quite get the meaning of the words. His brain was overheating because he was focused on the fact that the girl was holding his hand instead of what she was saying to him.
The time that began with Hortensja's arrival seemed like a dream to him. She appeared suddenly and accepted his help, although he still didn't know why he offered it. Love at first sight, or simply the fact that on that cold evening she needed a bit of kindness? Then she simply took up residence in his thoughts and didn't intend to disappear; he didn't even dare to ask for it. When he worried about her after their first meeting, he was convinced that he would never see her again, although he wished her the best. She came looking for him on her own, and on top of that, she waited for him for so long, so how could it not have touched him even more?
He wasn't going to deny that Hortensja's beauty had made an impression on him from the beginning, although she was definitely not his type. He knew that she would somehow manage without him, but he was glad that he could support her and that she relied on him. She interested him in every aspect; even the shortest meeting and conversation filled him with only joy. He loved her smile, and when he managed to make her laugh, he felt prouder than after getting a job.
Hikaru fell in love, and although it wasn't for many days, each day he became more and more certain of it. And according to Matsuo, this was his worst flaw. He fell in love too quickly, then he nurtured the feeling, gathering the courage to finally confess it, and it was always rejected. At least all those girls did it quite gently, so Hikaru didn't give up, and then he got absorbed in work and didn't have that much time for dating. From time to time, either his parents or someone at work would propose a blind date to him, but none of them ended with a clear proposal to meet again. This young man was simply unlucky, but lucky enough that his heart wasn't broken as painfully as his friend imagined.
The most surprising thing for him was that neither he nor Hortensja really wanted their relationship to take on a romantic nature. He called their meetings dates in his head, but he didn't make any serious moves, because he also didn't know how long the girl intended to stay in Japan. He didn't want her to think he wanted to take advantage of her. The initiative didn't have to come only from him. The Pole was also interested, and she was the one who grabbed his hand, and what's more, it looked like she really didn't intend to let go. Of course, Hikaru was so happy that he didn't even notice that he managed to skip a few steps that he couldn't even try to take before. It didn't dawn on him that he basically announced himself as her boyfriend, and she accepted it. Hortensja, however, proposed to skip even more at once, and as she later decided, she probably lost her mind for a while.
“Can I move in with you?” she asked and thus unleashed a small chaos.
