Chapter 16:
The Skeleton Who Couldn't Feel, Yet Fell In Love Anyway
As Amara invited me to stay inside her room, I decided to follow her and accept her offer. Usually, I wouldn’t imagine doing such a thing, but considering that I’m already dead and a skeleton on top of that, I think it wouldn’t hurt to accept the offer.
“I did expect that it would end up like this… But are you sure about this?” I asked as I looked at Amara who was in front of me. “Am I supposed to jump in the window?”
“That’s the only way. It would be risky if we headed straight to the door. You don’t want my Mom seeing me together with a standing skeleton, No?” she said.
“Well…” I muttered, nodding at her once. “Got it. But it’s locked isn’t it?”
“Yeah, so you would have to wait a minute before I get into the room.” she said. “Don’t you dare run away!”
“If you ask me, I might do it.” I answered.
“Please don’t do that. I’d rather see you stay here than find out that you’re missing again.” she said.
“Uh…” I muttered, surprised about what she said. I scratched my head and couldn’t help but try to laugh it off. “I got it.”
“That’s what I wanted to hear.” she said, as she floated away. “Wait for me.”
I nodded in response as she floated away to go inside the front door.
What’s really happening? Did I miss something? Or is there any reason why Amara is doing this thing? I pondered to myself. I tried thinking of reasons why Amara would even do this thing, but nothing made any sense.
In the past, I don’t know anyone whose name is Amara. Not even once I’ve heard a name. But, for some reason, she’s this kind to me. I don’t even know if this is kindness, or if there’s something more about it.
A girl this kind to me? I don’t even know how is it possible, even if I tried to make sense of it, nothing comes to me. Normally I would doubt people, but seeing how she’s this kind, makes me want to trust her.
Lost in thought, Amara finally slid the windows. “Come in.” she called.
I turned to my right and looked at her. “Are you into skeletons by any chance?” I asked.
“Why are you even asking that kind of question?” she questioned.
“I was just wondering.” I answered.
“Enough of that, you need to come in immediately.” she urged.
I nodded in response. I climbed through the window and jumped into the room. As I stood inside the room, Amara closed the window behind me.
Frozen and unsure of what to do, I remained standing without moving a single step.
What now? I asked myself, confused about what I should do.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“What am I supposed to do?” I asked back.
“Take a seat at the bed first.”
“The bed!?” I exclaimed.
“W-what? Why are you shouting?” she stammered. “You don’t want to sit on the floor, right?”
“Uh…” I sighed. I walked to her bed and took a seat at the edge. I looked around nervously, and couldn’t help but be silent the whole time.
Then suddenly she took a seat beside me. “What do you think of my room?” she asked.
I took a glance at her. “It looked good. I noticed how comfortable and clean it looked like.” I answered her. “That’s the only thing I could say. My sense limits the way I see this room.”
“I see. You can’t see colors, right?”
I nodded. “Yeah, all I can see is black and white, it looked colorless to me.”
“Got it.” she said, and then continued, “The walls are colored white, just plain white. And the table over there, it’s where I use my laptop. If it’s not clear, it’s also white. Then over there…” she pointed out things, telling me each of them.
“And the bed…” she said, tapping the bed below us. “The cover is color brown, where the pillows are still white as always.” she continued.
I nodded in response.
“Were you able to visualize it a bit?” she asked.
“A bit I think. I’m not that imaginative, so it would be really hard for me to do it.” I answered.
She chuckled softly. “You couldn’t help it. You think you would be able to sleep soundly here?”
“I… I don’t know…” I replied awkwardly. “I haven’t told you yet, but I think I can’t sleep.” I revealed.
“Really?”
I nodded once. “I did try closing my eyes and empty my thoughts, but it didn’t work. The last two nights, I was just staring at the moon.” I chuckled softly.
“Then you don’t get sleepy?”
I nodded. “Not once. I also can’t feel any hunger, but that should be normal since I’m already a skeleton.”
“You don’t know.” she said and lay on the bed. “It’s pretty comfortable in here. You can try it.” she suggested.
“I can’t do that!” I frantically shook my head as I stood up. “Why would you even suggest that!”
“Because I wanted you to sleep in here.”
“No.” I shook my head and pointed at the floor. “The floor is wide enough and I can sleep here without any problem.”
“Won’t your bones hurt?” she mocked.
I frowned. “I just told you that I can’t feel anything, right?”
She chuckled. “Ah right.” she stood up from the bed and jumped to the floor. “It's such a waste though. You don’t like my bed?”
“It’s not a matter of whether I like it or not. Why would I even sleep on your bed when I can just sleep on the floor.”
“Is that so?” she said.
“Of course—” Then suddenly she pushed me to the bed. “What are you doing!?” I said as I tried to bring myself up when she suddenly pushed me again.
“Don’t get up.” she said, ordering me. “I know you can’t feel anything, but this is better than you sleeping on the floor and better than sleeping on the grave.”
“I know—”
“If you can’t do it, I will tell anyone about your existence. And yes, before you ask, I am threatening you.” she said as she floated away.
“That’s so selfish…” I said, getting up.
“I am selfish. All I want is for you to sleep in here, and don’t you dare escape right now.” she said, opening the door. “I’m hungry. I’m going to go back here, wait for me.”
Then she closed the door.
“What was that about…” I muttered in confusion.
