Chapter 10:

SOLO WITCHLING

Laurels Journey

We were heading for the Elf kingdom.

As for why the elf kingdom? Well…

“Because your inability to cast spells is most probably a result of a compatibility error with your wand and broom.  I can tell because I had the exact same problem, once upon a time.” She said.

She acts all doom and gloom, but she’s a friendly teacher after all.

The journey to the Elf Kingdom was going smoothly so far.

It was a twenty-day flight by broom from the academy.

There was no road set up; the Elven kingdom of Eridu was located in a sandy desert region away the other race’s civilization.

XXX

I’ve only ever read about it in books. The schtick of it is that the Elven kingdom was considered to be a holy land blessed by the goddess herself. They’re the most powerful race. And the ones who contributed the most to the defeat of the demon lord Teufel.

It was once a holy land but now it's a desert huh?

A lot of the elves who fought the demon lord and saved humanity are probably still alive today. And because of that, they look down on the other races.

Anyway, Teacher and I were going there to ask them to make me a new wand and broom, but based on what I know about them, the Elves, really hate humans so I doubt they’ll just do us a favor like that unless we pay an arm and a leg.

What sort of plan does Teach have?

I must enquire immediately!

Teacher sighed. It was a long-exaggerated sigh. Even with the wind blowing strong and her back turned against me as we rode the broomstick through the air, I could hear her sigh. “Nah, there’s no way…” she muttered.

When she turned to face me, she had the same lazy glare in her blue eyes.

“Everlyne, I’m an elf.” She said, twitching her long pointy ears.

How cute!

No. Wait, no! My teacher is an elf!

GASP!

“I’m a half elf, to be more specific. But I look no different from a pure-blooded one.” Teacher continued. “The elf gene is rather strong it seems… Anyway, I assumed you were making fun of me, but judging by that reaction… Are you telling me you really didn’t notice?”

Gene? What’s that? Teacher says weird words sometimes. Gene. The word is oddly familiar but I’m certain no such thing exists… More importantly, Teacher is mad at me.

As I felt Teachers’ disapproving gaze, an awkward silence fell between us.

I looked out towards the clear sky and distant plains.

The view from riding a broom is incredible.

I had to give Teach some props! Her magic grade is F, but she’s a really skilled witch! Her spell formulas are so efficient they barely leak any magic! I figured it would be a problem flying us both, but she’s doing it no sweat, she hasn’t even began to show any signs of running out of magic yet.

As I stared towards the distant lands, Teacher dutifully piloted the broom.

“Not too long till we get to Eridu. It should be smooth sailing from here.”
