Chapter 22:

9th Wave - Chants from the Depths [2]

SING!! The Mermaid Needs the Shiny Necklace ✧˖°.

While Princess Eirin and Risei were visiting the Sea Witch…

At the Palace of Pearls, there existed a troubled merman.

The King and Queen of the Palace of Cobalts had a total of five children.

It was somewhat tricky to measure merfolk age by human standards, seeing their lifespan far surpassed a man’s. However, though their growth rate was a bit slower than an average human, it was not impossible to have an estimate.

Their youngest had been born just the past winter and was learning his first words, while their eldest would soon be a father himself. The third and fourth princes were just about to enter merfolk’s equivalent of “adolescence”, while their second eldest recently had entered—officially—“adulthood”.

In his parents' eyes, Seikan was a slightly more mature child. In his brother’s, he was finally old enough to be his own person. To his people, he was an inspiring role model.

That said, to the prince himself, none of that mattered. For there was only one opinion he currently cared about, which was of the mermaid who currently held his heart in both hands. Yet to the Queen of Pearls, an experienced mermaid who had already been married, gone through two pregnancies, and quite settled in the “middle adulthood” stage of her life—

Prince Seikan was no older than a young boy. And though the prince himself was not fully aware of that, by the brief interactions he managed to have with the queen, he could tell she still was not seeing him as a possible romantic partner.

A fact he was desperate to change.

His brother was very set on disrupting his progress and “making Sei reconsider the worst mistake of his life”, yet to Seikan’s fortune, Ryousuke received an urgent message from his fiancée urging the elder prince to return as soon as possible. And his old brother was wise enough to comply.

Which meant Prince Seikan had no more obstacles preventing his progress [he did though, quite a lot], yet no allies either. The merman hadn’t relayed his intentions that candidly to Princess Eirin, which meant she never provided any guidance on how to conquer her mother’s heart.

However, even before his betrothed left the Palace of Pearls, he noticed the side glances the younger princess kept sending his way. Eyes that at first seemed just as inexpressive as the princess herself, but that he was later able to interpret.

Eyes that shone with hints of suspicion and uncertainty, no matter how briefly.

So, after both her sister and his brother had departed, Seikan waited [half a day], and observed [for quite less than that], and when he was certain of himself, he approached Princess Reika.

“The day of the ball, you heard us, right? My brother and I.”

There was no threat or animosity in his voice. On the contrary, as Reika watched the prince’s expression, she could see a glimmer of…hope, brewing deep within his eyes.

“What does it matter to you?”

Truth be told, Reika had followed the princes on purpose. She saw the elder prince react oddly to something Seikan said, only to drag him away seconds later. Since that merman was soon to be married to her sister, she wanted to make sure both princes would not cause harm to her family.

Which made her quite conflicted regarding her findings.

Prince Seikan smiled.

“Because if you know what I think you know, this means you are the only one who can help me while your sister is away.”

Reika’s mind understood what the prince meant. And, at the same time, it refused to.

“Help you…with…you mean, regarding…” She kept waiting for him to confirm [and even more, to deny] her first assumption.

And Seikan complied in a heartbeat.

“Conquering the heart of the queen. Your mother.”

The second princess was having a difficult time assimilating the prince’s words alongside the joyful, carefree tone in his voice.

So she felt it was her duty to remind him, exactly, of the situation he was in.

“… she’s a widow.”

“And I’m single! A perfect match.”

Reika stopped moving.

“You are engaged. With her daughter.”

“An engagement she arranged—easily revocable.”

The young mermaid was, at that point, beyond shocked. She could see and feel in Seikan’s voice how truthful—how earnest—he was being. How he truly meant every word he spoke, with no ill intentions but the foolish ones carried by an even foolish-er love.

So Reika asked something she never thought she would, as she considered doing something she never thought she would agree to.

“Why do you want to marry the Queen of Pearls?” As the prince opened his mouth to reply, Reika swam closer, standing inches away from his face.

More often than not, others misunderstood her intentions and feelings because she was horrible at expressing herself. At that moment, she didn’t want to cause a misunderstanding. She needed the prince to understand her. What she was asking of him.

“I remember what you said to the first prince—I don’t want to know your intentions, or the extent of your feelings. I want to know why you believe you love my mother.”

Prince Seikan held his breath, taken away by the mermaid. Not only by her bold questions, or the firm tone in her voice, but by the sheer strength and conviction shining faintly in her eyes. One that came not from animosity towards him, but love for her kin.

And as they stared into each other's eyes, there was nothing Prince Seikan could do but respect and honor Princess Reika’s feelings accordingly. So he answered her truthfully.

He didn’t speak for a long time, yet his words carried their own weight. Words that were anything but carefree and frivolous. Words that had been given their proper depth and thought.

Princess Reika remained silent for a long time, pondering. Considering the prince’s every word and how her reply would affect them. Her sister. Her mother.

The memory of her late father.

She met Seikan’s eyes again, recognizing the flame that kept burning in his gaze. One that was pure.

Sincere.

“I will help you.”

The merman widened his eyes, almost not believing his ears. “Y-you mean, you will help me with—”

And Reika’s voice never wavered as she spoke. “I will help you win my mother’s heart.”

“You know, for the past days… you have been acting quite strange.”

Ketsuya wiped down the sweat on his forehead, his gaze following his younger coworker.

Kojin Okihiro continued to unload the boxes.

“Is there nothing going on? I noticed you didn’t sail this past week either.”

Most times, Hinomiya Ketsuya would start talking to Okihiro almost in a unilateral way. He would talk about all things going on in his life, Okihiro would “listen”, and that would be it. Though it could be tiring, he found the older man’s presence comforting in a way. That one person who cared enough about him to bother communicating.

However, sometimes, Hinomiya Ketsuya would not talk about himself. Instead, he would inquire about Okihiro’s affairs—were they public or private. Questions that touched places Okihiro didn’t want to look at, much less acknowledge, while his eyes seemed to be trying to rob the secrets of his very soul.

And Okihiro never knew how to deal with that.

“You’ve been visiting Tomi-san a lot.”

Okihiro tripped.

How does he even know...?

“I know old Seina-san is one of the good folks, but she is not abusing you or anything, right? ‘Oh, I need a strong and reliable man to help, so if you want to use my boat, you will have to do everything I say’, it’s not something like that, right? Because you know, Okirin, you can be too naive sometimes. You can’t let others be abusing your heart like that, you hear? You are too kind for your own good.”

Okihiro opened his notebook in a rush, writing as fast as he could.

‘I’m the one who asked Tomi-san for a favor. She is doing no such thing, so I would prefer if you could refrain from insinuating such things when it could create problems for Tomi-san.’

Ketsuya rubbed his chin as he read, raising one of his eyebrows.

“You? Asked help for old Tomi?”

He nodded. Yet Ketsuya squinted his eyes, his gaze even more piercing.

“What kind of help could you get from Seina-san, though? The only thing she has that could be of use to you is her boat, and she has neither any connections with the folks here at the port nor—”

The young man felt his heart racing, the sweat accumulating in his hands. In a few anxious movements, Okihiro flipped his notebook page and wrote something else, turning the thing to the older man.

Ketsuya’s voice faded, his words being lost in a void as he read his coworker’s question.

It took a few seconds for his eyes to sparkle and come to life, a new fire burning within.

“My date with Hyou-chan?!” A warm and joyful laughter escaped his lips before he continued. “Oh, well, I was trying to keep things private, but if you want to know!”

Okihiro watched as the man flushed, a new boyish smile spreading across his face.

Like a completely different person...

“You see, some folks here keep saying she only agreed because I wouldn’t leave alone, but I know the truth. My words finally reached her heart, and when she saw how hot the flames of Ketsuya’s love truly burned, there was no way she could say no. I’m telling you, that woman gets me.”

Kojin Okihiro let out a sigh of relief, glad that his life was no longer a subject of interest for their conversation.

As the day went by, occasionally he would gaze toward the sea. Eager like he had never been to go back there.

And, occasionally, he would mouth a single word. Testing how his lips and tongue moved, imagining how it would sound, how it would echo and spread.

Eirin

Anticipating the moment he would be able to say that word out loud. Not as a mere word, but as a call.
