Chapter 17:

Red Lenses

Miracle Without Rabbit Ears

"Mira, I need you to put your arms up."

"Got it!"

"Why am I in here too…"

The girl in white, Mira, and I are all crowded into one of the single occupancy changing rooms of this superstore. Mira stands in front of the mirror and our saviour is right behind her. I'm stuck standing in the corner trying to take up as little space as possible while holding a measuring tape, a journal, and a purse.

"It can't be helped, Mira insisted on your presence."

"You could have just told her no…"

Here we have another person that insists on spoiling the little rabbit. The girl feels Mira's body through her sundress as she continues speaking.

"It's probably not a bad idea that you're here, regardless. You can learn how to perform the measurements yourself in case she grows."

Without turning around, she motions for me to hand her something. I place the soft measuring tape in her hand and she starts unwinding part of it.

"It also helps to have an extra pair of hands."

"So that's the main reason!"

The girl takes the measuring tape and wraps it around Mira's chest. The rabbit can't hold her voice in at the sudden contact.

"Haha, that tickles!"

"Don't worry, it won't take long."

Through the mirror, I can see the thin strip revealing small curves beneath the white dress. I've already seen everything, but that doesn't make this experience any easier. It's impossible for me to continue observing. Would you look at that, the wall is looking real nice today.

"Notebook."

The girl procures a pen from somewhere and points it in my direction while holding the tape in place.

"A-Ah, sure…"

I try my hardest to avoid glancing into the mirror as I hold out the notebook on an open page. The girl quickly writes down a number and proceeds to repeat the process slightly lower.

Dark pen markings from the previous page are slightly visible as I pull the notebook back. My curiosity gets the better of me and I flip the page. Surely it couldn't possibly be more uncomfortable than watching the rather stimulating events in the mirror.

"Blegh!"

Oh, how wrong I was. My brain is assaulted by a series of numbers, operators, and probably Greek letters that I've never even seen before. Top to bottom, through the margins, and even around the holes in the page, it's all math. I simply shut the notebook, hoping that the poison would leave my body eventually.

I feel a prick of a pen against my arm.

"Notebook."

"Ah, sorry…"

I have to find the page again and the process continues.

After measuring at Mira's hips, the girl retrieves her items and we all step out of the dressing room.

"I think I know what size she should need."

"T-That's good…"

My response is a little lackluster due to all of the stares directed our way from the nearby women. No matter how you look at it, our party stands out way too much after having all walked out of the same changing room. Especially this girl with snow white hair, she is like a walking beacon even if she didn't have such strange coloured glasses.

"Which colours do you prefer, Mira?"

"Colours?"

The three of us are back in the original aisle of panties. I'm standing further back as the girls figure out the details.

"Nobody is going to see it, so you can just pick your favourite colour."

"That's not right, Noa will see it."

"Huh!?"

A suspicious glare responds to my surprised yelp. The girl's eyes were narrowed for a majority of the time in the dressing room, but her gaze this time smells of blood. It feels like a laser could fire out of her reddened eyes and obliterate me on the spot.

"Is that so?"

"No! You have it all wrong!"

Oblivious to the threat that my life is facing, Mira bounces over to me with a troublesome question.

"Noa, what colour should I get?"

"D-Don't ask me! Just pick a colour that you like!"

"Noa always gets mad when you see me without them, so I thought you had a preference."

The temperature in the room is getting lower by the second as the girl in white displays her disgust. If only I could explain the complicated situation that led to me getting flashed more times than I would like. I don't know which would make her more disappointed, a magical tale of a rabbit turning into a human or the simple fact that Mira tends to disrobe too quickly.

"I don't care, just pick one!"

"Hmm…"

Mira furrows her brows at the decision before her. The girl in white places a hand on Mira's shoulder, but not without turning her back to me as a denial of my existence.

"Do you have any colours you like? You'll need a few pairs, so you can pick multiple if you need to."

"I don't know…"

"Okay, how about a particular thing that you like?"

With a hand on her chin, Mira thinks hard. She's been human for barely a day and a half, so there isn't a whole lot to work with. A lightbulb appears over her head.

"Spaghetti!"

"S-Spaghetti?"

I sigh as the girl's eyes widen with surprise before narrowing with perplexion.

"Like…with tomato sauce?"

"No, with that white Alfred sauce!"

"I-I see…I guess white works as a colour. Anything else?"

Mira goes back into her thoughts, but doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. In the end, she looks back towards me and points directly at my face.

"Noa!"

"Eh!?"

I take a thoroughly flustered step backwards and crash into the shelf behind me. Fortunately, it's sturdy enough to keep from falling, but my back doesn't appreciate the several lines of metal digging into my skin. The girl in white is only getting more confused in the meantime.

"That's also a hard answer…"

As I'm rubbing my wounds, I feel the red lenses aimed back on me. The suspicion of my potential crimes still lace her voice.

"Pick a colour. I'm sure Mira would like whatever you pick."

"What colour would look nice, Noa?"

"Uh…if you're sure about me picking…"

I'm outnumbered in the vote, so a decision must be made. The moment I start pondering, an image of Mira in underwear pops into my mind. Every last cell in my body proceeds to propel my head into the nearest solid object, namely the shelf.

"Urk…"

Crap, this image is too much! Something about it being underwear somehow makes it more powerful than her wearing literally nothing. Just imagining this image feels like I'm doing something I shouldn't be.

Several colours flash before the image in rapid succession. The obvious option would be white, a nice and generic choice without too much going on. Unfortunately, that colour is already taken. The next is at the opposite end of the spectrum with a high contrast black. Definitely a solid choice if we wanted to highlight Mira's fair skin. I would die if I had to watch Mira move about the apartment in such provocative underwear, so black isn't happening. That's about the extent of my imagination before my brain overheats and shuts down.

"Noa?"

I jump as Mira appears in front of my eyes. She tilts her head in confusion after I slammed my head and went silent for who knows how long. After having fantasised about Mira almost naked, making eye contact is a challenge. However, I don't have a choice in the matter. Every time I try to turn to look away, Mira walks around and reestablishes the connection. All I can see are her deep blue eyes. Deep blue eyes.

"B-Blue…"

"You like the colour blue?"

"S-Something like that!"

Mira smiles and hops back to the other member of this party, whom I had completely forgotten about. I can finally breathe a sigh after being relieved from such a torturous task.

"Noa likes blue, so I'll go with that!"

The girl in white seems less than convinced at the choice.

"Are you sure? You have to be the one to wear them."

"It's alright! If Noa likes it, then I think it should look fine!"

"Again, I'm not going to be looking!"

Mira laughs at the frantic look on my face. Seriously, what am I going to do with this annoying rabbit? Worst of all, I feel myself smiling as well at her joy. Her laughter is contagious and there exists no cure. I even see a small crack in the lips of the uncertain girl next to us.

"If you say so. That should work, unless you can think of any other colour."

The girl moves to reach for a small pack of underwear, but is stopped before she can lay her hands on the packaging. Her reddened eyes are wide as she turns to the rabbit tugging on her sleeves.

"Would one more colour be okay?"

"That shouldn't be an issue. Which one are you thinking of?"

Without any uncertainty, Mira points directly in front of her. The girl in white instinctively leans back as a finger is brought up to her eyes.

"Those things! They look really cool!"

"M-My glasses?"

The girl in white has her mouth agape at Mira's insistent nodding. For some reason, she looks in my direction as if pleading for help. What she needs assistance for, I have no clue. Regardless, all I can do is smile apologetically and shrug.

"A-Are you sure, Mira? This kind of red stands out too much! It'll just look weird!"

"Didn't you say that nobody will see it and that I should pick a colour I like?"

"I-I guess I did…"

Mira takes the girl's hands and beams a wide smile.

"Then it's decided! Now we can match!"

The girl in white can't seem to take her eyes off of Mira as the rabbit bounces up and down with excitement. With the space between them gone, so too disappears the almost indifferent expression she had been carrying thus far. This smile is beautiful.

"Like we said, nobody will see it! We can't match like that!"

She returns Mira's grip and the two girls laugh in a world all their own.
