Chapter 7:

The 13 X

The Endless Abyss of Her XXII

Kai’s footsteps were quiet against the soft earth, the forest pressing in around him. The moon hung low in the sky, its pale light casting long shadows that danced like fleeting memories. He could feel the weight of the cursed clock on his wrist—its tick-tick-tick echoing in his mind, reminding him that time was slipping away, that with every second he delayed, he risked losing Moia. He was running out of time, running out of chances.

The map Blik had given him was still clutched in his hand, but it felt like it was slipping through his fingers. The symbols were as cryptic as ever, and the path ahead was obscured by an overwhelming sense of dread. This was the thirteenth quest, the one he’d been dreading from the moment he’d set foot on this path. He’d survived twelve, but this one felt different. It wasn’t just about the monsters or the challenges. It was about something deeper—something that could change everything.

"You’re not just fighting for your life anymore, Kai," Blik’s words echoed in his mind. "This quest... is about more than you. It’s about the choices you make."

Choices. Kai gripped the map tighter, his fingers cold. He could feel it, the weight of the decision pressing on him. The air was thick, heavy with something he couldn’t quite place, and his eyes kept darting nervously to the shadows around him. He had no idea what to expect, but deep down, he knew whatever was coming would make him question everything.

The forest around him was unnervingly quiet, the usual sounds of rustling leaves and distant animal calls absent. It was as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

His heart beat faster as a shape appeared in the distance—a figure, dark and formless, standing at the edge of the clearing. Kai’s pulse quickened. He knew that presence, that sense of something watching, waiting for him. The figure.

It had been there during every quest, just on the periphery of his mind. Sometimes, it felt familiar, as if he’d seen it before, but whenever he tried to focus on it, the memory slipped away like water through his fingers. He couldn’t remember who it reminded him of—someone he knew, someone he should have recognized. The thought gnawed at him, but there was no time to chase it. Not now.

He forced himself to take a step forward, each movement deliberate, his hand inching toward the razor blade on his back. This quest wasn’t like the others. It wasn’t about a monster to slay or a task to complete. It was a choice. And that choice would determine everything.

The figure didn’t move, but its presence seemed to grow stronger, pulling him toward it. Kai felt a cold shiver run down his spine, but he didn’t stop. He had to face it. He had no other choice.

As he approached, the figure’s form began to solidify, its shadowy outline becoming clearer. It was tall, cloaked in darkness, but its features were still indistinct, shrouded in some kind of mist that made it impossible to see clearly.

"Do you understand now, Kai?" the figure’s voice was like a whisper carried by the wind, an unsettling mixture of familiarity and foreignness. "The choice you make will shape the rest of your path."

"What choice?" Kai’s voice cracked, betraying his anxiety. "What do you want from me?"

The figure’s form flickered, and for a moment, Kai thought he saw a flash of something—something that almost looked like… her. Moia. But before he could focus on it, the figure’s voice cut through his thoughts.

"Your quest is almost complete. The final decision is yours. Will you sacrifice your past to save your future? Or will you hold on to what you love and risk losing it all?"

Kai’s heart raced. He wanted to demand answers, to make sense of what the figure was saying, but something about its words felt suffocating. The weight of them pressed on his chest, and he could almost hear the ticking of his cursed clock, louder now, as if the universe was urging him to make a decision.

He thought of Moia. Of her laughter, her warmth, the way she had always been there for him. She had been a constant in his life, even when everything else had crumbled around him. And yet, he couldn’t deny that the curse had taken something from them—had taken something from him. Every reset, every failed attempt, had only brought more pain, more loss.

And now, the figure was offering him a way out. But at what cost?

The figure spoke again, its tone shifting, as if it could sense Kai’s hesitation. "You have what you need, Kai. The power to break the cycle. But to do so, you must make a choice. You cannot have both. You must choose between the future you desire and the past you cling to."

Kai’s mind spun. The past was filled with memories of Moia, of love and laughter. The future, however, was uncertain, filled with shadows and fear. If he chose the future, he could break the curse, but what would happen to Moia? Would she still remember him? Would she still be by his side, or would she be lost to him forever?

"Moia..." Kai whispered, his heart aching. "I can’t lose her."

The figure’s form flickered once more, as if to emphasize the weight of the decision. "That is the question, Kai. Do you choose the life you’ve known, or do you gamble on a future that may not include her? Your love is your greatest strength, but it may also be your greatest weakness."

Kai’s hand tightened around the hilt of his blade. The decision was before him. But even as he prepared to make it, he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more at play than he could understand. That figure… it reminded him of someone. Someone he had known long ago. But who?

His thoughts flashed to the diary, the one he had kept hidden for so long. The one Moia had found—her face full of confusion and sadness when she read the pages. The one that chronicled every reset, every failure, every moment of loss. He hadn’t understood it before, but now, in this moment, it hit him like a wave.

The diary wasn’t just a record of the past. It was part of the grand design. It had been the guide all along, the key to unlocking the truth. His every choice, his every move, had been written there before he even took them. The figure… the quests… Moia’s love for him—it was all connected, all part of a story that had been written long before his birth.

But what did that mean for him? Had he ever truly had a choice?

A realization struck him. The diary had been his burden, his map through the maze of time, but it also held the answers he hadn’t been ready to see. The figure, the curse—it was all part of a larger plan, a test he hadn’t understood. And now, standing here, the decision was his to make.

With a final, hesitant step, Kai raised his sword. He would make the choice. But whatever happened next, he now knew the truth: this wasn’t just his fight. It was a fight that had been set in motion long before he had ever taken the first step.
