Chapter 10:
The Endless Abyss of Her XXII
Kai walked through the crumbling streets of the abandoned city, the air thick with dust and silence. The moon hung low, casting long shadows that twisted and stretched across the decaying buildings. Each step echoed in the emptiness, a reminder of what had been lost—and what was at stake.
He could feel the weight of the clock on his wrist, ticking away, its rhythm almost mocking in its indifference. The quest had led him here, to this ruined place, and with every passing second, he knew the consequences of his next decision would echo louder than any step he took. The path before him felt heavy, as if the very air was pressing down on him, whispering warnings he could not ignore.
"This is the 20th quest," he thought to himself, the words settling in his chest like a stone. "And there’s no going back."
The figure had warned him: “The hardest part of the 22 quests is not the battles you fight, but the choices you must make. You think the quests are your test? No, boy. It’s the test of your heart.”
It had been cryptic, like everything else the figure had said. But Kai had learned to listen. He had learned that nothing was as simple as it seemed. There was always a catch, a consequence, and with each task completed, the stakes grew higher.
As he moved deeper into the city, his eyes flickered to the ruins of what once might have been a home, or a café. The memories were there, etched into the very bones of the place. And yet, as much as he wanted to linger on the past, he knew he couldn’t afford to. Not now. Not when the world—his world—was slipping through his fingers.
Then, a voice broke through the silence, echoing in his mind. It was the figure again, but this time the voice carried a weight of finality.
"Kai, you will be tested again. You must choose between two things, both of equal value to you. Choose wisely, for your heart will determine the fate of all that you hold dear. And once the choice is made, it will be irreversible."
Kai’s heart raced as he stopped in his tracks. A vision flickered before him—a memory, or perhaps a future he feared. He saw Moia, standing before him, her eyes filled with love. But there was something else in her gaze, something fleeting, something he couldn’t quite grasp.
Her voice echoed in his mind, soft and filled with sadness. “Kai, you don’t have to do this. Not for me. You don’t have to choose the world over me.”
His breath caught in his throat, and for a moment, he saw her standing there, as real as the ground beneath his feet. But just as quickly, she disappeared, like smoke in the wind, leaving him grasping at the remnants of what could have been.
"The world, or her?" the voice of the figure whispered in his mind, a taunt, a challenge. "You cannot have both. Choose, and know that everything you love will be lost to you."
The air around him seemed to shimmer with the weight of his dilemma. His eyes darted around, searching for something—anything—that could offer clarity. The ruins before him felt suffocating, as if they were a symbol of what was to come. Every step forward felt like a step further away from the person he had once been.
Moia had always been there for him, a constant in his life, her love a beacon that had guided him through the darkest moments. And yet… could he save the world, save everyone, at the cost of losing her? Could he live with the consequences of choosing something larger than his own desires?
He closed his eyes, letting the weight of his emotions wash over him. The anger, the fear, the desperation—it all swirled inside him, an internal storm he could no longer control.
What was he supposed to do? How could he make a choice that would decide the fate of everyone he loved?
"Do you feel it, Kai?" The voice of the figure was closer now, as if it was standing beside him. "The weight of your decision? You think you can change the world, but you cannot save everyone. You cannot save her, and you cannot save the world."
Kai opened his eyes, his chest tight with the knowledge that this was his moment. He couldn’t keep running. He couldn’t keep pretending that he had the answers. The figure’s words had always been cryptic, but now, they felt like a warning—a cruel reminder that no matter what choice he made, he would lose something dear.
His mind raced. He thought of Moia—the warmth of her smile, the way her hand felt in his. He remembered the way she had stood by him, even when the world seemed to fall apart around them. Her love was a lifeline, a tether to the world he had fought so hard to protect.
But then he thought of the people—of everyone who depended on him. What was the price of saving them? What was the cost of their survival?
Tears burned in his eyes, but he forced them back. He couldn’t afford to lose himself in the pain. Not now. Not when the world was still in the balance.
He turned his gaze back to the ruins. This was the price of the 20th quest. The burden of choice. He could no longer run from it.
With a deep breath, he made his decision.
The moment the decision was made, the air shifted. The world around him seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy, as if the very fabric of reality was stretching and twisting. Kai closed his eyes, bracing himself for what was to come.
He could feel the absence of what he had lost, the weight of his choice sinking in as the world continued to turn. Moia, the person he had loved with everything he had, was now a distant memory. The world had been saved, but at the cost of his own heart.
He didn’t know what would come next, but he knew that this was the point of no return. There was no going back now.
The 20th quest had ended.
