Chapter 0:
A Hobgoblin is An S-Ranker!?
Ena Shaharice was an elf priestess who dared to leave her forest home of Yggdrasil and enter the Kingdom of Elmore. There she went into the massive guild hall known as Aore and registered as an adventurer.
“I’ll make a name for myself by becoming S-Rank! Then I will have access to the greatest magical knowledge in the world!”
Those were Ena’s words—a verbal declaration of her ultimate goal. She is an elf who had reached the age of two hundred and forty which in elf years was that of a young adult. A student of great renown who graduated with full marks in the academy hosted by the High-Elves she vowed to become a mage who would rival even the Ancient Meisters of Mana in the Ancient Times.
But all must start from the bottom of the stairs before they can climb out. After filling out the contract, Ena was given E-Rank which was the beginner level of an adventurer. She was only allowed to take missions of one or two stars. Missions that were three or higher involved more dangerous tasks that only C and S Rank could handle.
“The first mission…I should take something not to difficult…”
Ena stared at the request board for a few minutes before finally pulling down a sheet of paper that was branded with one black star. On the paper was the horrible drawing of a fat monster wielding a club. The words of the sheet read:
“Slay One Hobgoblin In the Hills of Autuo!”
“A hobgoblin! Ha! Perhaps that will be too easy!”
Not even bothering to take any materials with her, Ena journeyed to the Hills of Autuo which was just outside of the city. At the top of the hill was a small wooden house releasing smoke from its chimney and a hobgoblin tending to the crops right outside it.
“Is that hobgoblin…farming?”
Ena stared in disbelief at seeing a monster that she deemed as inferior performing normal human labor.
“What the heck? There is no way such a dumb creature knows how to farm!”
“Who are you calling dumb lady!?”
The elf priestess released a loud yelp as aimed her staff at the hobgoblin which was now staring at her with an annoyed glare.
“You can speak English,” Ena stated. “Very impressive…I wonder what spell your master did to help you learn in such a way.”
“I have no master.”
The hobgoblin responded quickly as he continued to throw some seeds to the ground.
“You have no master? Ha! Don’t make me laugh! You goblins are mindless monsters! If you are moving about like this then it means you have a master who gave you intelligence! Where are they!? Maybe killing them along with you will help raise my level even higher!”
“Like I said before, I have no—…wait, did you just say you were here to kill me?”
Ena snickered.
“Oh my~! I gave away my strategy~! Oh well, I’ll just take care of you now and get answers about the title master later!”
“I told you before that I have no master—w-w-what a second!”
But Ena did not stop to listen as she fired a large glowing ball of magical energy towards the hobgoblin. But before the attack could hit, the goblin ducked and rolled to the side.
“Why you—“
The hobgoblin then picked up a rake.
“Hmph!”
Ena raised her head in absolute confidence as she was conjuring more magical energy to fire another spell.
“If you don’t want your death to be painful then you should stay perfectly—“
Instantly, the hobgoblin disappeared from where he stood and reappeared right in front of Ena.
“…Still?”
The elf priestess lost all the color and confidence in her face.
“W-what—“
With all his strength, the hobgoblin rammed the butt end of the rake to Ena’s stomach. The force was enough to throw her body miles back, crashing into multiple trees and disappearing into the far distance.
The hobgoblin let out one loud huff before screaming out towards the distance.
“Never step foot here again otherwise I’ll kill yah!”
Then the hobgoblin walked back to his house, slamming the door behind him.
And miles away was an unconscious Ena who was laid out next to a broken tree and snapped in half staff.
“O-ow…
