Chapter 25:

Girl and the Dragon

Short Stories

I sat on the beach and listened to the waves rolling endlessly onto the wet sand. The remains of my ship burned slowly further down the shore, and the violet flames, tainted by the alandrium core, cast long shadows as they consumed my only way home.

The dragon sat on a rock sticking from the shallow water, watching me with her golden eyes. She hadn’t uttered a word since she saved me from the burning wreckage. Even in her human form that she had now taken, she looked alien and menacing, sending cold chills down my spine. It was an unsettling feeling, like her gaze pierced through my heart and reached my soul in search of secrets that she could use against me.

I could strike her. I had enough power left in my suit to power my weapons, I thought. But I was almost certain that she knew about them, and yet she hadn’t disarmed me when she had a chance. She knew my weapons weren’t a threat to her, no matter how damaged her systems were, and I wouldn’t be foolish enough to try to use them, knowing how senseless that course of action was.

So she sat and watched me with her golden eyes, wanting me to make the first move and reveal my intentions. Or had she been more damaged than she showed, and was trying to hide her weakness behind a show of strength? The sudden thought passed through my mind.

My ship had a fair chance of killing a dragon, and if our battle turned it into smouldering wreckage, her damage should be equally grave, but I had no way to be sure. I sighed. Why had she saved me?

There was no point in asking her about it. Dragons always had more than one reason motivating their actions, and listening to their words would be a foolish and dangerous thing to do. Dragons never lied, but what they didn’t tell you was what really mattered.

I have many dragon stories in my notes but i write too many stories already to consider writing any of them right nowYet dragons called me so i wrote this short flash fiction as a creative outlet, playing with the idea how dragons are in my universe
