Chapter 19:

Battle of Iron and Silk

The Pact of Iron and Silk

Stonegate Keep's delicate silence was stretched as tautly as a strung bowstring. With the conviction that the fabricated evidence held the key to both clearing Grakka and revealing the real culprits, Kaelan pressed his research to the limit. His scout, Brennan, walked through the keep like a ghost, hearing whispers, seeing patterns, and discreetly reporting back. Now, Grakka also appeared to use her keen observational abilities inside, as her warriors maintained a vigilant, disciplined stance, avoiding confrontation but not missing anything. Grakka supplied the nuanced element that turned skepticism into confidence. A quick, almost contemptuous remark: "The guard, Marius. The noisy person who made fun of me during the muster. When he's not on duty, he too frequently strolls along the wall by the granary. observes things. A bad liar.

Marius. Kaelan scowled. Yes, the Sergeant had been outspoken about his animosity, but Kaelan had written him off as merely bravado. However, a different picture was drawn by Grakka's observation and Brennan's account that Marius had been close to the tampered lock just before it was found. Brennan was instructed by Kaelan to increase the Sergeant's monitoring. Brennan came back the next day with evidence: a brief, coded communication that had been hurriedly concealed under a loose stone in Marius's bunk, explaining troop rotations and noting cash received through "the usual channel." The rudimentary code matched intercepts that were previously connected to Baron Varkas's known associates by Kaelan's own intelligence network. Not only were the enemy outside the gates, but they were also dining at the King's table and donning the King's colors. Varkas's agents within Stonegate were Marius and probably others he controlled or manipulated.

In order to secure Marius and any confederates without inciting widespread panic or prematurely disclosing the entire scope of the conspiracy, Kaelan acted swiftly, organizing a covert arrest. But he didn't realize how desperate trapped men were. An alarm horn abruptly sounded from the western tower as Brennan and a small group of Kaelan's most devoted guards made their way covertly to Marius's barracks during the nighttime shift change. This was the incorrect signal, indicating an exterior breach rather than internal issues.

Then there was instant chaos. Through the courtyards, shouts could be heard. Confused, the men fled, some toward the armory, some toward the walls. The attack's actual nature then became evident. The loyal guards at the main gate were slain by a gang of soldiers, led by a grim-faced Marius, who made a rapid, violent rush for the controls. At the same time, another gang made an effort to break into the tower that housed Grakka and Kaelan's suite. When the traitors at Stonegate realized their plan was failing, they began their desperate plan to take over the keep, kill Kaelan and Grakka, and then probably open the gates to any mercenary forces that could be waiting nearby under Varkas's command.

Kaelan didn't hesitate to respond. As treacherous men rushed into his hallway, he yelled, "To arms!" and brandished his sword. "Traitors inside the fortress! "Cry for the King!" Years of command presence caused the devoted guards surrounding to become confused as he confronted his charge, his blade glittering in the torchlight.

Grakka heard battle sounds immediately. Borg and several other warriors appeared discreetly behind her as she came out of her chamber, cleaver in hand. They witnessed the chaos and bloodshed spreading below as Kaelan engaged in combat with soldiers dressed in the livery of his own fortress. Chaos, treachery, and opportunity characterized this human-on-human conflict rather than a human onslaught on goblins. Borg gazed at her, waiting for orders, possibly thinking the command would use the chaos to further their own agenda or even secure their own position.

For a crucial moment, Grakka looked around the scene: Marius's men were trying to force the gate mechanism, loyal guards were trying to build a defense near the stairs, and Kaelan was holding the corridor against superior numbers. She made a snap, firm choice. "With Kaelan!" she shouted, her voice piercing the background noise. "Kill the traitors!" Alliance had given way to survival in the face of a shared, immediate foe who posed a threat to everyone.

Her soldiers acted without hesitation. They charged forward with screams of ferocity and landed on the flank of the men assaulting Kaelan's position. The traitors' charge was broken by their swift and fierce attack. Relieved of the burden, Kaelan immediately gathered his devoted soldiers, yelling commands and forming a defensive line.

The conflict over Stonegate Keep raged is a perplexing, vicious skirmish that takes place in stairwells, courtyards, and hallways. Loyalty broke apart brutally. Men engaged in combat with previous allies, uncertain in the fading light of their torches whether they were friends or enemies until it was too late. However, a peculiar and powerful synergy surfaced amid the confusion.

Grakka led her warriors in quick, vicious counter-charges, striking the traitors' weak spots and using their knowledge of the keep's less obvious pathways (gleaned from Grakka's earlier "inspections") to outflank entrenched positions, while Kaelan organized human soldiers into shield walls and directed disciplined volleys of crossbow fire from upper walkways. Once antagonistic, goblin ferocity and human discipline now cooperated. Grakka's tactical rage stopped the enemy's momentum, while Kaelan's strategic thinking guided the flow.

Near the main gate, where Marius and his core group made their final, desperate stand, they found themselves fighting close to one another once more. Holding the line with his shield, Kaelan deflected strikes and created space while directing the defense with a steady voice. Beside him, Grakka swirled like a tornado, her cleaver rising and falling, transforming parries into lethal retorts, while her presence compelled the traitors to split their focus. Grakka's thrown knife lodged in Kaelan's throat as a traitor lunged past his guard. When an axe struck Grakka's head, Kaelan's shield struck the assailant in the side, knocking him to the ground. Their understanding was full, formed in the furnace of the previous ambush and now tempered in the heat of this greater conflict, despite their scarce communication—a yelled warning, a pointed gesture, a shared battle-glare. For the first time, goblins and humans took against a common foe in recognizable colors, fighting not only side by side but together under a common command.

Inexorably, slowly, the tide changed. The unexpected alliance outnumbered and outfought the traitors, who then started to die or surrender. In a final act of loyalty, Marius roared Varkas's name as he made a desperate charge at Kaelan after realizing his scheme was failing. While Grakka came in from the side and decisively ended the sergeant's disloyalty with her cleaver, Kaelan met the charge with his sword, diverting the reckless swing.

With the exception of the ragged breaths of the surviving and the moans of the injured, silence slowly descended upon the blood-splattered courtyard. With their weapons down and their adrenaline still high, loyal humans and goblins gathered gingerly amid the wreckage. The immediate danger has passed. Stonegate's traitors were vanquished.

With his countenance stern and his armor soiled, Kaelan stood close to the gate, contemplating the price of the triumph. Grakka arrived to stand next to him, using a fallen traitor's tunic to clean her cleaver. For a long time, they remained silent and watched the aftermath, the bizarre scene of goblin and human triumphants standing together over slain human traitors. Smoke, blood, and the unmistakable fact of their permanently altered relationship were all in the air. By sticking together in the face of treachery from within Kaelan's own ranks, they were able to not only survive but also solidify their relationship in the most indisputable way possible: via mutual aid and combat. The conflict with Varkas and the Shadow Broker was far from done, but the battle was won and the keep was safe.
