Living in a cabin on a mountain with a couple cats is not the best idea. The bad part is that our cats are outdoor and they always have been. We do try to keep them in our screened in outdoor room, but if you have cats then you should know that cats and screens don't go very well. So we do let them out when it not to cold. That means in the summer, the bears aren't in hibernation any more. That makes it kind of scary to let our cats outside. So that leaves us to have to go out and watch them when we let them out.
When we first moved in we didn't know how much these bears like our cats. We had to find that out for our selves. That led to not the best first encounter you would want to have with a bear. We had let Span outside to get some fresh air. I had decided to go with him since he was a very social cat, and I'm glad I did.
We spotted a trail off to the side of the path, it was kind of hidden. The view was pretty nice and we got to see a lot of flower blooming. We go distracted by a cattail in a little pond. And that was when I heard a loud roar come from the direction of Span. I turned to look at him andthen another loud roar came, but Span did not even open his mouth. I looked past him and saw something big and brown. It was a bear. I had read somewhere that bear don't usually attack humans, and that you should identify yourself as a human and not prey.
I was lost in thought trying to think of what else the guide had said to stay safe around bears. Then I was brought back to attention when I heard another roar. Not a roar like before, lessloud and not bear like. It sounded more like a cat's hiss than a bear's roar. I looked down atwhere Span had been, but he was not there. Something caught my eye in on a branch thathad fallen down. It was Span, he was hissing at the bear trying to scare it away, but it was notworking. The bear was getting closer. It likely thought Span was food.
Then Span jumped on to the bear attacking it with his claws. The bear did not look to happy. He looked kind of scared. Then the bear knocked Span off of him, but that was right after Span got the bear's eye. Thankfully, the bear had its eyes closed and did not get hurt. Span was able to land on his feet right in front of me. The bear ran off back into the woods. I picked up Span and sprinted back to the cabin. Got inside and lock the door.
After that we got a screened in porch. A little while later in the news paper there was an articlecalled "from Woodsong." One of the bears that he described had a big long white scare on hisface. The way that he described it sounded a lot like how the bear Span fought in the woods. Ishowed Span the picture and he hissed a little as if he remember the bear. We learned never go out on a trail with bears without Span.
