Chapter 5:
My Dear Dictator
the bird with a broken wing lasted long enough. it fell on the ground. some other birds fly around of it out of curiosity. some of the birds were spectators of the struggle until the show ended hitting the ground. after some seconds the birds leave. one of the birds gets inside of a classroom. it flies around the students until it lands on the teacher's desk. the teacher scares the poor bird away.
Bernard is surrounded by unknown faces. he is on the edge hanging from the last string of his massacred sanity. he can't play attention at all. the teacher talks about theories and whatnot. but none of those words make sense to Bernard. all he can think about is the fairy.
in a corner are two boys talking about video games. they eat chips loudly. a girl in the front row sitting closer to the door is doing her nails. another girl that sits at her left does her makeup as she asks for a dating advice. all students are lost in their own world. barely any one is paying attention to the teacher who seems to be frustrated by the lack of respect.
the clock moves at its own speed. soon a second passes, then it becomes a minute. it keeps going like that until the class in finally over. Bernard stands up. he stretches his body. he grabs his backpack and walks out of the class. a rough small hand pulls him to a corner. he looks directly at the sharp eyes of Grace.
"We need to talk. now." she said simple and clear.
"Who am I to oppose you, if a conversation you seek, then let's do it." said Bernard avoiding eye contact as he blushes.
Bernard follows her to the rooftop. there they are once more. at the place where they met for the first time yesterday. Bernard walks in circles thinking that maybe she is going to propose. he blushes as he starts to comb his hair.
"I will be honest. I am from the future. I need your help. there is a brutal, a vicious man with a God complex forcing nations to bend at his will. a brutal heatless animal who rules with the cold hands of a tyrant. an abusive beast killing all young or old. I need to kill him. no. I have to kill him to avenge my parents. I need you to help me. please, we need to find him." said Grace in a monotone tone without showing a single emotion.
"You don't need to ask twice. I will do anything for you." said Bernard as he holds her hands.
"Thank you. just one more thing. don't tell anyone about our little secret. me getting exposed by a civilian is similar to scheduling our execution. so, for our own good. keep it between us."
"Don't worry. you can trust me." said Bernard sweating nervously.
Grace notices that Bernard was still pretty much confused. she went deeper into more detail exposing certain confidential information. there was a crucial detail she excluded. she omitted to confess that in case a normal person was to learn confidential information about E-T agents, they must be either erased or their memories will be erased.
Grace admits that she will start her mission soon. the first two targets on her list are Jack Hall (Bernard's tormentor) and his girlfriend Chole Whitely (Bernard's childhood friend. it brings a strange feeling for Bernard to properly think and analyze what 'helping to erase' means. he isn't sure if he is willingly to become a murderer for the girl he likes so intensely.
there is a bitter flavor in the mouth. some cold liquid causes goosebumps. then it came the realization that Bernard was crying. it wasn't clear why, after all he hated Jack. and there is no way that he feels sympathy or cares about either of them. maybe it isn't about them. for too long Bernard had accepted that he was a lonely soul. but he doesn't feel lonely now. he feels understood even when murder is part of the conversation.
he was about to ask her to be his girlfriend when some strange lightning interrupted them. the lightning was coming from afar. it came in different colors. it took the form of a sphere as it landed somewhere quite far from the school.
"Oh fuck, things for sure are getting too out of control. it is just the second fucking day. that is not how my first mission was supposed to go." said Grace in a monotone tone, but you could feel the anger in between the pauses she took in between words.
"I am not sure if this is a wild guess, but I am incline to assume that whatever is behind that isn't playing for your side. perhaps a rival." said Bernard loudly as he points at the lightning.
"No imbecile. I work for the only enterprise that deals with this kind of dirty work. that is either another agent sent to assist or take my job. or a traitor has sold us to the enemy. whoever was send today, he didn't come to play around." said Grace feeling nervous and irritated.
Grace left him. she walks downstairs. she can't come up with a proper reason why or who could be behind such a display of power. she is almost falling apart out of terror. the confusion doesn't allow her to think straight. she stops for a second to breathe. a friendly hand touches her shoulder from behind. she reacts to Mrs. Bank who came to remind her of her mission.
"Do we? Are we? I am lost." said Grace unable to make sense of her own words.
"Calm down girl. you're still in the middle of an important mission. Bob confirmed that Headquarters are still running the circus at fool speed. we don't know who came, but nobody came to take your job. just hold to your instincts." said Mrs. Bank smiling.
this was no simple matter. Grace could tell that the school soon will become a battle ground. as things keep moving forward. it was obvious that there were more struggles and distractions on the way. if she could use an analogy to explain her situation. you could say that fate is like a truck driving at full speed, Grace is in the driver seat and in front of her is a massive wall that she can't avoid. no matter what she does, she is meant to crash against that wall.
Grace came to a conclusion. she can't keep waiting for Hannes to appear. she will start eliminating her targets. once she is done with the first five names, then she will search till the end of the world until she finds Hannes. there is no more waiting. there is no more doubting. things need to be done. there are too many issues along the road. Grace needs to act fast and smart before losing herself in doubt.
Mr. Bark leaves Grace thinking. he pulls a candy out of his pockets. he takes the wrap off. he then swallows the candy. he keeps moving forward with Mrs. Bank at his side. they are about to leave the school grounds. they move towards a single direction. they can't allow intruders in the middle of their job.
Bob stops them on the way. he tells them to hold on. Bob then goes to a classroom walking with firm and slow steps. as soon as the door is closed a silhouette is drawn in front of him. Bob uncovered the intruder's identity even when looking at them from behind.
"So, it has come to this." whispers Bob.
the other person didn't answer. he just turns around revealing to be no other than Greed. he smiles as he sits down. he is covered in wounds, dust and blood. he is hurt so badly. he is a miracle that he was out there running like there was no tomorrow a few minutes ago.
"Yes, as I had previously informed you. Alfred is still alive, but he was captured by Hannes. some of our scientist actually made it out alive. most of our forces were taken out. and some traitors had sold a machine to the enemy. we're losing. we need this one victory."
"Is out of my comprehension if the wild dogs were tamed beyond recognition or what kind of beast lies ahead of us with such cunning wisdom that does of our attempts to rebellion no more than an opera of buffoons." yields dramatically Bob.
"I am returning to rescue Alfred once I recover. in case I don't return after one month. you should initiate protocol Final Timer."
there was an absolute silence in the room. on the other side of the door was Mr. Bark listening clearly to every last word. protocol Final Timer wasn't a thing to take lightly. Greed mentioning it only meant one thing, things are about to get worse.
