Chapter 6:
The Branded Hero
Hearing the high-pitched voice of the small goblin made me realize that standing before me was a literal child. With that realization alone I relaxed and took my hand off my blade.
I ignored the two monsters and walked away. But as I was walking I could hear the loud and heavy footsteps of the young goblin following behind me. I turned back around to see that the goblin and his warg were only a few feet away, staring at me with killing intent.
"What do you want brat?"
"What do you think? You murdered my comrades in cold blood! I'm gonna get my revenge!"
The warg barked aloud as if agreeing with his master's statement.
I rolled my eyes and turned back around with one hand on my hip.
"I'm not going to fight you kid. It wouldn't do good to my conscience to take the life of someone so young. So run along, go back to whatever dirty goblin hole you live in."
The young goblin growled in irritation and then shouted at the top of his lungs.
"You think you can kill my partners and just leave?! Think again! I am Ulguc of the Shin Tribe and I swear on the Spirits of Or me and Thor will kill you!"
"Whose Thor?"
Ulguc pointed to the warg right beside him who growled at me.
I nodded.
"Cool cool."
I brushed them off as I continued on my journey. But ignoring Ulguc and Thor proved to be difficult as they would try to attack me every five minutes. Because of how weak they were I wasn't in any real danger. I casually dodged their pathetic attacks as I walked on. Ulguc would always end up on the ground with sand in his mouth but immediately got back up to try again. But no matter how many times the young goblin tried to attack me I never struck back. I figured that eventually, he would realize that my evading all his attacks was the obvious sign that he stood no chance.
I was horribly wrong as the stupid back and forth between me, Ugluc, and Thor went on for three days straight. From morning to night the young goblin and his warg would challenge me. Because of this, I didn't get a chance to breathe or sleep.
Reaching the end of my patience on the morning of the fourth day, I grabbed Ulguc from the collar of his jacket and threw him to the floor. The young goblin groaned in pain while Thor went over to his side.
"Kid..."
My entire body visibly started to shake with anger as I stared down at the two monsters with a crazed smile.
"If you don't leave me the hell alone right now I will actually freakin' kill you!"
Ulguc shouted back, "I've been trying to challenge you all this time! Are you finally taking me seriously?"
I facepalmed while I let out the loudest groan possible.
"Sure kid. I accept your challenge."
The young goblin jumped up in the air and started cheering like a kid who got the exact gift they wanted for Christmas.
I put my hands up to show that was ready to fight.
"You better not regret this later kid."
Of course, I had no intention to actually kill Ulguc, I planned to rough him up just a little. I was hoping to destroy his fighting spirit so that he could finally leave me alone.
As I took my stance I expected Ugluc and Thor to try and tackle me like they have been trying to do for the past few days. Instead, the young goblin reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cloth bag. Before I could even guess what he was gonna pull out, Ulguc put his entire arm into the bag and pulled out a giant hammer made of stone.
The stone hammer was the size of a whole person yet the small goblin child was wielding it as if it was a toy. My eyes felt like they would pop out of my sockets and my mouth was left agape.
"WHAT!? WHERE DID THAT HAMMER COME FROM!?"
Ignoring my confusion, Ulguc grinned widely while waving his hammer.
"Get ready to be crushed human!"
Like the speed of the wind, Ulguc and Thor disappeared from where they previously stood. I was caught off guard by this sudden act of agility but I quickly regained my composure.
"Take this!"
Ulguc then reappeared in the air, swinging his hammer to hit me across the head. I already predicted where he was going to be and ducked just in time. As retaliation I gave the young goblin a palm strike to his stomach, sending him flying back a few feet.
A second later, Thor was charging for my feet, the beast's jaws were wide open, hoping to bite off my leg. I jumped up and kicked the warg away.
Ulguc and Thor got back up and proceeded with the same method of attack, but I meant them at every step. Despite them still not being as strong to be a threat to me I found their strength to be kind of impressive.
After at least three minutes of me dodging and hitting those two, they eventually jumped back and stopped attacking.
"If you think that's our full power you're horribly mistaken! Get ready for this!"
Ulguc raised his hammer to the sky.
"Earth Magic: The Planet's Cry!"
The young goblin then brought his weapon down with all his strength, creating an earthquake that shook the ground below us. The very ground rippled like the waves of the ocean, making me lose my balance.
The moment I lost my footing, lightning bolts appeared in front of me. It was Thor, whose fur was no longer black but white and his eyes were as blue as diamonds. Electricity surrounded his body like a coat.
"So this warg's magic is lightning..."
"Don't take your eyes off of me!"
Right behind me, Ulguc was preparing to strike with his hammer. I blocked his powerful attack with my free arm which hurt a lot. The bone that was broken from the hobgoblin was not fully healed.
"Take this! Earth Magic: The Call of Gaia!"
Coming out of the sand were golems made of rock and dirt. The animated creatures clung to me, sealing my movements.
"D-damn!"
"Now Thor!"
The warg covered in lightning descended upon me like a hawk while letting out a loud bark. A bunch of lightning bolts and spears came out of the monsters and fired at me.
Not wanting to get electrocuted, I lifted my free right leg and kicked one of the golems up in the air. The golem got hit by one of the lightning spears. I then lifted the other two golems and threw them towards Thor.
Now free I rolled out of the way of the lightning attack and focused my attention on the remaining golems. With my bare hands, I made the dirt monsters crumble to dust. I could see Ulguc starting to get nervous that his tactic didn't work.
Turning to the young goblin, I smiled at him.
"Good job kid! Skills like that can honestly take out a low-level knight of Eleiweth."
Ulguc growled.
"I-is that suppose to be praise?!"
"Yes," I answered nonchalantly. "Your race is known to be the weakest in Ocaleveth but your magical talent is nothing to laugh at. Keep training and you will become a beast."
The young goblin was left speechless by my words but then quickly shook it off and retook his battle stance.
"If you think you can get me to drop my guard you're wrong! This fight is not over!"
"That's right, I didn't attack yet."
Without wasting any more time, I charged at Ulguc at top speed. The young goblin was ready for me and swung his hammer. I moved out of the way of the swing and tried to deliver a punch to his side, but Ulguc blocked my fist with his knee.
"Nice reflexes kid!"
"S-shut up!"
Ulguc screamed with a flushed face. The young goblin then released a flurry of wild attacks which I easily parried.
"Earth Magic: Bound of the Soil!"
Sharper rocks covered the bases of Ulguc's hammer, making his weapon more dangerous. I dodged every one of his swings knowing full way that a hit from that weapon would not be pleasant.
After dodging the fifth swing, Thor appeared from behind and tried to swipe at me with his claws. When I moved my body out of the way I grabbed the warg's paw and threw him right at Ulguc.
"Thor!"
Ulguc shouted in worry and caught his friend. That was a terrible mistake because the young goblin seemed to forget that his pet was covered in lightning. So the moment his free hand caught his warg the boy got electrocuted.
He released a defeating shriek before falling over on the sand, landing right on top of his pet, crushing him. Thor whined as he was under his owner while I stared at the two of them with a small smile.
"You two are pretty hilarious you know?"
I walked over to the two monsters and knelt down.
"You guys did pretty well. But your coordination needs a little work."
"S...shut up, human..."
Ulguc grumbled, his face still in the sand. I giggled in response.
"The battle ends with my victory. Go back home."
"I...I can't..."
"Hm? What'd you say?"
"I can't go back!" Ulguc yelled as he lifted his head out of the sand. "Not until I beat you!"
I sighed while shaking my head.
"Kid, you're not beating me so just-"
Out of nowhere, pillars of wood rose from the sand all around us. They then enclosed us with a wooden ceiling creating a cage. The moment I started to look around me, Ulguc, and Thor were already trapped.
I looked at the two monsters on the ground and they wore the same face of surprise as me.
"What's going on!?"
Outside the cage, I noticed a group of goblins who wore armor made of bones surrounding each corner. They looked way more intimidating than the goblins I fought a few days back.
"Did you truly think you would get away with slaughtering our people? As the Chief of the Shin Tribe, I will not let this crime go unpunished."
The wooden bars of the cage parted like a curtain as a single individual entered. It was a towering female hobgoblin with a sleek body and well-toned muscles. Her eyes were as red as rubies and she wore armor made of the bones of a mammoth. Inscribed on the armor was red text written in the ancient goblin language, which I could never understand.
"Hey kid," I called out to Ulguc. "Whose this?"
Ulguc answered, "That's the chief of my tribe! Brolx: The Mother of the Spirits! She is the strongest goblin in Drogmaria!"
"The strongest goblin..."
I started to sweat but not from the heat of the sun.
"This is gonna be tough..."
