Chapter 23:
Streamer Royale
Serika and the others stared at a flyer outside a tavern. "Gambling cruise? Guess I am old enough to gamble, but Yuni isn't."
"Maybe the legal gambling age is lower in this world?" Yuni pouted.
"Why would you want to gamble?"
"To test my intellect. Gambling is a game of luck and rigging, meaning it's essentially code breaking in a sense."
"Innocence is bliss. Stick to gambling video games."
"Yeah, they're way more fun and you don't lose real money in them," Carol chimed.
"You could still slap a wager on outside the game though," Astrid smirked.
Yuni stared at the poster once more, zeroing in on the girls in bunnysuits. "Madoka, I wonder if you're performing your magic act somewhere in this world."
...
"Achoo!"
"Oi, no spectating. Go gamble someplace else," Mrlinda snarled as she shooed Madoka and co away from the Poker table.
Emeri sighed as she sat down at the poker table and watched as Madoka and the others begrudgingly went off. "You could at least let them watch from a distance."
"I ain't stupid. 300,000 euro entry fee, baldy," Melinda sneered.
Emeri shot her a scowl and slammed down the stack of cash.
"Excellent. Now, this here is standard 5-card poker. Oh, and I'll be nice and put one of the things you need on the line. One shot though, so better hope you get a good hand. But first, a little warm-up."
While Melinda shuffled the cards, Emeri took the chance to probe her opponents. One was a large fat man with a pig-like face, one was a woman in a fancy kimono, there was also a woman in a business suit and a man with a metal jaw.
As soon as Melinda finished dealing out the cards, Emeri looked at her hand. An ace of clubs, two 10s one diamond one spade, a 5 of hearts, and a 7 of spades. No one decided to raise, so Emeri traded out the 5 and the 7. She received a queen of clubs and a jack of diamonds.
“Raise by 100,000,” the fat man grumbled.
"Mr. Pigwig's raising! Anyone else?" Melinda snickered.
“I second,” the man with the metal jaw growled.
The woman in the kimono also agreed to raise, while Emeri and the remaining woman folded.
"Now show your hand."
"Wait, can't I raise even more?" the woman in the kimono protested.
"No, not this round. Now your hand?"
The woman clicked her tongue and threw down her cards.
"Junk... Talk about bluffing through life. How about the boys?"
"Straight," the metal-jawed man stated as he laid his cards down.
"Full house, oink. I win!" Mr. Pigwig declared as he slammed his cards down before all.
After dealing out the winnings, Melinda reshuffled the cards and took in the bets from everyone. This time, Emeri had been handed a full house of 2 3s and 3 2s. After Emeri refused to trade in any cards, Melinda placed a key on the table.
"This ain't cheap, so all in or nothing."
“All in!” Emeri declared.
Mr. Pigwig snickered and folded.
“You think we’d foolishly waste our money when you're-"
“I’ll match!” the woman in the business suit women smiled.
“Tch, I’ll match!” the metal-jawed man grumbled.
“Raise!” the woman in the kimono enthusiastically shouted.
There was now 3,000,000 chips in the pot in addition to the key.
"Alright, now the moment of truth. Ladies and gentleman, turn over your cards!"
Emeri turned over her cards. She had beaten the man’s 3 of a kind, and the kimono woman’s flush. However, the other woman had a 4 of a kind.
“Looks like I win that nice looking trinket,” the woman in the business suit snickered as she scooped up the earnings along with the key. She pocketed it as Emeri began to cry.
“Emeri Ginkawa, you were no match for me. My men may not have won, but a lucky gambler did. I doubt she is the type to hand that key over to you. Well, you still have money left, so I’ll let you despair,” Melinda thought as Emeri rose and began to cry as she strolled away.
"Sorry about that, Emeri, but to fool your foes, you gotta fool your friends," Rika thought as she clenched the key in her pocket.
