Chapter 5:
The Day the Sun Crashed into Earth
I look to the clock on my wrist. It was time for lunch. I search for Ron from across the room, his head was the only one that stood out from the crowd, kind of hard not to miss it, he was the tallest one after all. I followed his head with my body. It led me to the back of the room. The crowd disperse, Ron comes into view. With his height and stature, he looked like he was sitting at a kids table. It’s usually humorous, but not today. Ron looks over and signals me.
“Hey Becca,” Ron said as he chuckled. “I heard from everyone that Mrs. Betsy called you Becca yet again today.”
I give him a subtle smile.
“Something wrong,” he said with concern.
Yeah, I couldn’t tell him that the humanity race was doom.
But…
Becca Betsy was on my mind.
“It’s about Becca,” I said.
“Oh, if you don’t like me teasing you, then I’ll stop,” Ron said with worry.
“No, the real Becca,” I said.
Ron looked at me with deep interest and asked, “What about her?”
“It’s really devastating. Her family, they were in a horrible car accident. Seven years ago, actually. Only Mrs. And Mr. Betsy made it out alive. Becca, on the other hand, was pronounced dead at scene.”
Ron’s eyes widen as I showed him the article.
“No way, that must have been so terrifying for her,” Ron said with sadness.
“Yeah, I don’t know if Mrs. Betsy remembers or maybe she doesn’t want to, but I was hoping I could find Becca, but now, I don’t know what to do. She really is all alone in this world.”
Ron looks at me, “Yeah, it may seem like it, I mean it is, but if you really look at it, in a different aspect, she has us until her time comes. We just have to make sure she lives to the fullest until the end.”
I looked at Ron and smiled.
I watched as the sun’s rays come through the blinds and touches Ron, he turns to the window.
“Aw man, I heard it was going to be humid today. Ugh. Hot and humid,” he said.
The sun’s light comes into contact with the table. I reach my hand out, and place the tip of my fingers where the light was shining. The AC was on full blast today and I wasn’t wearing a sweater, so the heat from the sun was comforting this time.
John is seen wrapping a bandage over his bullet wound.
“I told you to wait until we saw my wife,” Paul said.
“Paul, I needed medical treatment an hour ago! I don’t have time to wait until puddles of blood form in the back of your seat. Did you want that?!”
“Okay, okay, but can you settle down? I can’t see the back of my rearview mirror. I need to make sure we’re not being followed.”
“Paul, we’re in the middle of NOWHERE!”
“Yeah, and that’s not odd to you?”
Paul exists the highway to smaller roads.
“Forget that. We’re probably going to be caught sooner or later. We need to let the public know now,” John demanded.
“Make a video and then what? We’re not going to get a thousand views, the most, maybe a hundred. That’s it.”
“Yeah, on any of our accounts but I have access to one of the biggest platforms, I’ll upload it onto their account,” John said.
Paul looks at his rearview mirror. He notices a black SUV coming from behind them.
“Yeah, you’re going to have to start doing that video now,” Paul said.
Paul aggressively steps on the gas and goes past a red light. John attempts to record the video but stops as Paul suddenly reverses.
“What are you doing?” John questioned.
“Shh.” Paul gestures with his finger. He reverses into an empty alley way. The black SUV drives past them. Paul puts his head down. He hears multiple cars go past them. John counted four other black vehicles. Paul notices an abandoned building.
“We’re going to get caught either way, let’s hide in that building and finish making the video,” said Paul.
They enter the building doors. John places the phone on the rusted gallon steel drum. He presses the go LIVE button.
Ron finishes his food and heads to the water fountain, “Do you want water?”
I shake my head, “No, I’m good.”
He takes the paper cup from the holder. As he proceeds to press the cold-water button, flocks of our co-workers gather at Susan and Nancy’s table. Intrigued, Ron heads to the table.
I heard him from across the room.
“What’s all the commotion?” He asked them.
I didn’t bother to join them, as I felt it was going to end by the time I walked over there anyways. I looked at my phone, hoping to get an update or text from my family, but no response. Ron calls out to me and gestures me to come over to the table. Ugh. I don’t want to go over there. This better be important. I dragged myself to the other side. Everyone was scrunched up to Susan’s phone. There, I saw my dad and John in view.
“We have 465 days until the sun collides to Earth,” Paul said.
“We recently discovered this devastating news, and wanted to inform you all before it was too late. One of team members have been murdered and we are currently on the run from the people who wants us to keep quiet. But don’t keep quiet about this. Inform everyone,” John said.
The LIVE ends.
“Why are you ending the video, John?” questioned Paul.
“Paul, get out of here, you need to be there for your family. Go before they find us. By now, they probably pinpointed our location.”
“No, you’re coming with me. John, you have your son as well.”
“Paul, this isn’t enough to persuade the people. I need to win them over with all our calculations and photos we collected. We lost Rob already. Do not let this go to waste. Everything needs to be revealed now!” John yelled.
“Go and get out of here!” John said as he hopelessly looks Paul dead in the eye.
Paul doesn’t say a word and looks at John with despair.
“Now go! Run and hide!” John yells.
Paul hesitates then sprints out of the building and heads to his car.
“I can’t take this car. They’ll spot me right away,” Paul said. He looks at his phone and calls someone.
John continues the LIVE.
“Hey, look, they’re live again,” Susan said.
“As you can all see, from these calculations and photos, the sun is getting closer and closer to Earth,” John said.
John takes out an in-depth, ten-page paper of their calculations. He goes over page by page; he reaches the last page. A photo of the sun is shown, with the rate of how fast the sun is approaching Earth. The views for the LIVE are increasing drastically.
“If this isn’t enough proof, then I can prove to you all that I have been attacked from just knowing this information,” John said.
John lifts his immobile leg with his hands and place it on a chair. He slowly unwraps the bandage that was used to cover his wound. LIVE comments from the viewers are popping up one after another. Admiral Richardson enters the building. John looks up.
A gunshot is fired, it hits John and leaves a lethal blow. His body hits the ground, lying lifeless on the cement. LIVE comments are filling up by the second. Admiral Richardson ends the live.
