Chapter 18:

He Makes A Date With Me

A Solstice Love Song

That night, I could barely sleep. I was too excited. It was the time I could spend the entire day with Marco; it would be our first date. That’s why I was up at six. The moment the sun rose, I was getting ready. We weren’t meeting until midday, but I just couldn’t sit still.

I finished getting dressed; I was wearing the suit I was going to wear the other day at the Gala before Darcy forced me to wear that dress instead. I heard a noise stirring from Darcy. She sat up groggily and took one look at me. Without even fully being awake, she had feedback.

You’re not going out like that, are you?”

Yeah, why?” A sudden memory surfaced. “Oh no! You aren’t putting me in a dress again.”

Darcy smiled a twisted smile.

I’m serious,” I added. This was not a Solstice work day, so there was absolutely no reason to dress as a girl.

Fine, but you can’t go out just like that. It’s your big day with Marco. Let me style you.”

I don’t need styling.”

She gave me a dubious look. I didn’t have that bad of a fashion sense, did I?

Alright fine, but no makeup and no dresses.” I relented.

With that, she quickly got up and began styling me. She didn’t even get changed out of her pyjamas. Thankfully, she followed our agreement and styled me in masculine clothing. Well, as manly as Darcy would allow. I sometimes wondered if she saw me like a sister instead of a brother.

Don’t you think this is still a bit feminine?” I asked.

Not at all, it’s youthful. It taps into your natural beauty and will pop against Marco.”

She styled my hair straight, adding some gel to sharpen it and give it a slightly wilder look. She also insisted that I wear shorts with suspenders and a white top. Finally, she gave me a small cap. Sure, the cap made me seem younger and more feminine, but having grown up in Australia, I had to appreciate any sun safety I could get.

Once she was satisfied, I decided it was time to leave. I was too scared of what else she might do if I stayed any longer. Besides, she also had a date today. I couldn’t take up all her time.

I knew I would arrive early, but I also hated the thought of waiting around for an hour, just killing time. I would prefer to find the location and stay there. Besides, wasn’t it fashionable to arrive early?

I made my way to the place written on the card. I was expecting a café or something. You know, I like coffee, and he likes coffee, so a café would be good. He didn’t tell me it was an amusement park.

I was wearing sunglasses to disguise my appearance. Still, as an Australian from a rural country town, even as a solstice performer, I doubt I would run into anyone who would recognise me. Besides, I dress like a girl on stage so that no one would recognise me now that I was dressed as I normally am.

When the meeting time arrived, there was no sign of Marco. I checked my phone to make sure this was the correct meeting spot. It was. Perhaps he was caught up in the traffic or something. I sat on a bench and waited another ten minutes. Still, there was no sign of Marco.

I began to look around. Perhaps Marco was awkwardly standing somewhere, waiting for me. The more I looked, the more it became evident this was not the case.

Surely, he would call if he was going to be significantly late. He’s probably almost here. I told myself. However, it did little to ease my nerves.

After thirty minutes, I was panicking. I was about to call him when a motorcycle rolled up. The rider removed their helmet, revealing it was Marco. Marco rode a motorbike? What the hell? Was there more I didn’t know about him? He looked amazing on the bike, but I also knew how dangerous they were. I didn’t want him to get hurt riding one.

He waved at me as he approached. Several other people were watching. While I remained conspicuous the entire time I had been waiting, everyone was drawn to Marco, and could I blame them? He was bloody hot. Girls were swooning… I was swooning. How could a guy look so hot?

Marco was wearing a brown leather jacket and blue denim jeans. Like me, he was wearing a white shirt, although his looked less dressy and frilly than mine; it looked far sleeker and cooler yet also far plainer. We couldn’t look more different. He was cool, handsome, and hot, and I was a letdown in comparison.

Like me, he was also wearing sunglasses, though instead of hiding his striking brown eyes and other distinguishing features, they only heightened his sex appeal.

“Hi Blake. You look very cute. Did you pick it out yourself?”

C-cute? He called me cute. I mean, I thought I looked kind of odd, but Marco called me cute.

“N-no, Darcy helped me pick out these clothes.” I stumbled out.

“She has good taste. You look super cute.”

He called me cute again.

“Y-you look super good too.” I tripped over myself to say. I had to look away as my face had turned way too red.

“Did you wait long?” he asked.

“No,” I lied. I was too captivated by his beauty to even listen to what I was saying.

He reached forward and brushed some of my hair out of my face, which only made me blush harder.

“That’s good.” He smiled softly, “Shall we head in?”

I diverted my gaze to the ground and nodded my head. If I stared at him any longer, I think I would faint. He reached for my hand and slid his into mine.

“Then let’s go, " he said as he gently pulled me towards the entrance, towards the beginning of our date.
