Chapter 1:

Uninvited Guests

Kitty's neighborhood

It all starts on a summer day. Kitty is taking Mama Cat’s kids to school. On the way back, she snatches a piece of meat from the butcher. The butcher notices and starts chasing her. She’s running, dodging through people, knocks over a vegetable cart, bumps into someone, glares at a kid, jumps onto a rooftop, and lands in a dead-end alley—where a handsome tomcat and his buddies surround her and take the meat.
They run off with the meat, and Kitty ends up caught in the butcher’s trap again—along with two mutts and one mangy stray. She escapes, limps to a corner, licking her wounds. They sting. She’s hungry, and there’s nothing for lunch. She’s got no time to think about those boys right now.
She heads toward the park, grooms herself, brushes a paw across her face. On the way, she sees Margaret, the old lady next door. She flirts a bit and scores a sausage sandwich, then heads home.
Mama of the twins is doing laundry. Kitty grabs a soda from the fridge, cracks it open, and flops onto the couch. Mila’s asleep. Luna hasn’t come back yet. A few minutes of silence pass until Luna walks in with bags full of snacks. Right then, something hits Kitty—she jumps up and yells:
"Girls! I saw a bunch of hot boys! Our territory's been invaded!"
She starts telling the story, loud and dramatic. Now everyone’s gathered around her from the commotion.
Strange feelings swirl in Kitty’s head. She wants revenge. Her prize was stolen. She got beat up. She came home empty-handed.
Now it’s quiet. Each cat lost in her own thoughts. Mama of the twins has brought the kids home from school and made some tea and cake. Everyone’s sitting around the table. Kitty says:
“So what do you think—how do we kick them out?”
Luna replies:“This neighborhood can barely feed ten mouths.”
Mama of the twins adds:“And the kids could be in danger.”
Mila asks:“By the way… what did that tomcat look like?”
Everyone gives Mila a meaningful look, and she falls silent. After a moment, Kitty says:
“He was a handsome, bold guy with long hair… and three other cats with covered faces.”
Kitty said they had to find out where they planned to settle.
