Chapter 3:
Kitty's neighborhood
The sun had reached the middle of the sky. Kitty stretched and began to groom herself. She carefully styled the fur on her face and licked her tail several times so it would look fuller. A fly, seemingly out of nowhere, had entered the den; Kitty chased it for a bit and then, with playful grace, went to the fridge, grabbed a piece of sausage, and started eating. It seemed like no one was home.
She went out into the yard, curled up in a corner again, and began to think: Now what’s the plan?
She thought maybe it would be better to attack them and say, This is our territory and you have to leave.
But then she thought that wasn’t a good idea. They were male cats, with big, athletic builds. They could hurt them and easily kick the girls out. Then she considered becoming friends with them. Shooper’s face flashed before her eyes; a strange, undefined feeling stirred within her, and she shook herself and suddenly said aloud, "No way!"
She got up, went over to the trees, fences, and doors, and started rubbing against them to mark them with her scent. Then she circled around, glanced at her reflection in the pond water, and returned to her spot, laying down to think. Her eyes were closed when suddenly an idea struck her: a spy!
She opened her eyes and saw Timmy, the little boy, coming from a distance. He seemed different today. He kept licking his lips, running and then walking slowly, laughing to himself.
Kitty called out: "Timmy! What are you doing here at this time of day? Didn’t you go to school?"
Timmy startled a little and said: "It’s finished. I got out early." As he came closer, the smell of sausage filled the air.
Kitty wanted to ask him something, but just then, the mother of the twins appeared along with the girls, their hands full of food, dragging a woolen rug behind them. The rug had long, soft fibers and looked very cozy. It was probably for the babies' bed.
Luna shouted: "Kitty! What are you staring at? Come help! Our hands are full!"
Kitty went over and together they carried the items into the house.
Mama Cat said: "In a house on Seventh Street, they’ve left some second-hand items in the alley. Kitty, go see if there’s anything you can use. Hugo will go for a walk in an hour, so it’ll be easier for you then."
Margaret had given Luna a lot of food. Milo had also managed to get some things from the butcher shop.
Kitty said: "I have an idea. We need to send a spy into Shooper’s team."
Everyone looked at her and said: "Shooper? Who’s that?"
Timmy coughed slightly and brought his milk bottle to his mouth.
Kitty continued: "Shooper is the leader of the tomcat team."
She glanced sideways at Milo, who was drinking his milk. Nothing seemed unusual in his behavior.
Mila asked: "How?"
Kitty continued: "We have to become friends with them."
Everyone turned to Kitty with curious looks.
At that moment, Nikki, the little girl kitten, entered laughing and dancing, sucking on something she had in her mouth.
