Chapter 45:
Echoes of Dream
A sharp gasp.
I quickly turn behind.
My eyes widened in disbelief.
Rosaria stood there with her eyes wide in shock. A horn protruded from her chest, it tore through and emerged from her back.
Rosaria was pierced by none other than the same injured horned rabbit that she was holding. It was emitting a subtle malicious energy.
The very thing she tried to protect had betrayed her.
Her hand tries reaching for me. Her teary eyes are looking towards me. Although she was mute I could hear her calling for me.
I jolt towards her slaying that horn rabbit along the way.
I caught her before she could collapse.
My world fell apart. As a vagabond, I care less about anything at all but after a long time, I finally found someone that I got attached to, someone that I loved, someone that I wanted to spend my entire life with but fate is truly cruel to me. The world snatched her from me.
She slowly reaches her hand to my face. I feel her gentle touch. Tears that I never even imagined just flowed down my face.
She slowly moves her fingers across my face forming letters. “I…Love…You…”
She writes that. Slowly, the light in her eyes fades and her hand falls. I hold her slowly feeling the life going away. She dies…
Marquis frowns his brows in sorrow. Leon sat still.
Uncle continues,
I couldn’t believe it. I refused to accept it. I called her name. I shook her. I poked her arm. I even whispered words I never thought I’d say again. But she didn’t move. She didn’t smile.
I slowly place her body on the ground. I slowly stood up.
I could notice the necromancer’s smile as he ordered his remaining soldiers and fled the scene.
The remaining undead, monsters, and mages charge toward me.
My mind was blank. I don’t even remember what happened, all I could remember was that no one else stood beside me.
Probably amidst the rage and agony, I subconsciously killed everyone present in the scene.
Then, I carried her body in my arms and walked aimlessly. I didn’t feel weight. I didn’t feel pain. I didn’t feel anything. Guards from the neighboring kingdom tried to stop me. They demanded answers. I… wasn’t thinking. I slaughtered them.
I slayed anyone who stood in my way. I didn’t know where I was going carrying around a lifeless body but before I could think of anything. I stood before Rosaria’s father’s grave.
I couldn’t give her much when she was alive but I wished for her to rest beside someone who truly loved her. I buried her beside her father. I stood there for a long time.
Then… something inside me broke. I knew she wouldn’t have wanted vengeance. But… it wasn’t about her anymore. It was me. It was my rage. My grief.
I went on a rampage. I was like a berserk demon. I was like a monster who thrived for their lives. I killed anyone who stood in my way. I destroyed Rosaria’s entire noble family. I killed hundreds and thousands of soldiers.
My state was unstable. Nothing except grief and rage filled my heart. At last, I found the necromancer. I killed him easily and brutally.
That never satisfied my heart. I went on a wild rampage.
Many know about it still to this day.
“The rampage of berserk demon”
The Marquis stiffened along his eyes widening in disbelief.
“This… I never knew. So it was you all along, brother. The tales of the berserk demon who vanished after leaving the land in ruin…”
Uncle nods. Leon eagerly listens.
Uncle continues.
After the rampage, I returned to this kingdom. My days as a vagabond went on until my brother coincidently found me at some time and urged me to return. I had nothing in my mind so I complied.
The days with my brother somewhat soothed my mind and heart. I sought strength for no reason at all. I just wanted something to distract my mind. I again set out on travel but this time by properly maintaining contact with my brother. I met many masters and learned their way. I fought them too yet none could satisfy my heart.
I returned again… to this estate. That’s when I became chief of the knights. I trained them. Taught them. And somehow… in the act of passing on what I knew, I found something else beginning to mend inside me.
Then… Noel appeared. She filled the empty spaces of my soul. She gave me someone to protect again. Someone to care for. Someone to love without fear.
This is it for my tale, boy.
He concludes his story.
“So I entrust to you with my most precious wish. Protect Noel. At any cost. Walk by her side. Live a life filled with joy and peace… and never, ever leave her.”
Leon filled with emotion nods.
Marquis, “Well then, as the night has fallen, let us end our gathering here and allow rest to find us.”
Then, suddenly. A silver streak in the sky. A beautiful comet passes by.
We also see Noel at her room’s balcony looking at the beautiful view.
Marquis, “The skies also have sent a signed to conclude our meeting, I guess.”
Everyone returns to their respective chambers.
As they go, Uncle once again approaches Leon.
“Leon…I have told you about myself so can I bother you to tell me about yourself too?”
Leon hesitates but spills out the beans.
“Actually, I am not from this world.”
Uncle widens his eyes but slowly composes himself. “You see. Leon, I actually suspected it to be something like this”
Leon is a bit taken aback, “Huh? You knew about it?”
Uncle, “The triplets report to me even behind Noel’s orders but even before that, I already had my suspicion. I would have interrogated you myself if I saw anything other than truth in your eyes. You are honest, boy. I don’t know or understand your situation but I hope you will continue to accompany Noel”
Leon nods.
They go their own way.
Leon enters his room.
Leon stands beside the window looking at the moon.
He prepared himself for the nightmare that would come again.
The red-eyed shadow appears again.
It's floating in the sky with its long spear.
Leon unsheathes his sword.
The red-eyed shadow plunges…
