Chapter 31: The Isles’ Emissaries

Whispers of the Crimson Gaze

A crisp autumn breeze swept through the palace courtyard as Li Xiao oversaw the final preparations for the Western Isles’ cultural delegation. Today, the Isles’ envoy would arrive to formalize the expanded trade and cultural treaty—an event she had helped craft from its earliest drafts. Lanterns of gold and sea‑blue hung between pines, and banners bearing the imperial phoenix and the Isles’ azure wave fluttered in greeting.

Li Xiao, in her lavender robes trimmed with silver lotus embroidery, moved among the artisans arranging silk tapestries. Each tapestry depicted scenes of Liángzhōu and the Isles united: shared festivals, joint patrols, and entwined lotus and wave motifs. She paused to adjust a corner of one panel, smoothing a fold so that the two cultures’ patterns flowed seamlessly into each other.

Beside her, Grand Advisor Jin Tao observed with quiet pride. His dark robes were edged in silver, and the small phoenix‑lotus charm she had given him glinted at his sash. He approached her, voice low. “Everything looks perfect.”

Li Xiao glanced up, offering a tired smile. “I only hope the delegation sees the spirit behind it.”

He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “They will. Your vision has shaped this moment.”

At midmorning, the Isles’ fleet appeared on the river beyond the palace walls—sleek vessels with azure‑white sails. A brass trumpet announced their arrival, and palace drums echoed in response. Li Xiao and Jin Tao led the welcome procession down the marble steps, courtiers lining the route with respectful bows.

Ambassador Eirian stood on the landing platform, her silver‑streaked hair and sea‑green robes a striking contrast to the palace’s crimson stone. She stepped forward with a graceful nod.

“Grand Advisor Jin Tao, Head of the Lantern Council Li Xiao,” she greeted, voice melodic. “It brings me joy to return to Liángzhōu as a friend and partner.”

Jin Tao inclined his head. “Your presence honors us, Ambassador.” He gestured to Li Xiao. “Archivist Li Xiao will guide you through today’s ceremonies.”

Li Xiao curtsied. “It is my privilege.”

Their first stop was the Hall of Scrolls, where Li Xiao had arranged a display of joint manuscripts: translations of Liángzhōu poetry into Isles’ verse, and Isles’ sea‑shanties rendered in imperial calligraphy. Ambassador Eirian’s cultural attaché, Lady Mira, examined the scrolls with delight.

“These translations capture the Isles’ heart,” Lady Mira said, running her fingers over the inked characters. “Your scribes have done exquisite work.”

Li Xiao bowed. “They honored the source material.”

Ambassador Eirian turned to Li Xiao. “These scrolls symbolize our shared stories. May they inspire future generations.”

Li Xiao felt a warm glow. “May our stories continue to weave together.”

Next came the banquet in the eastern pavilion. Long tables groaned with delicacies: Isles’ spiced fish cakes, imperial lotus‑stuffed dumplings, honey‑glazed spareribs, and candied kumquats. Lanterns swayed overhead, and musicians tuned zithers and flutes.

Li Xiao and Jin Tao seated Ambassador Eirian and her retinue. As the guests dined, Li Xiao moved among them, ensuring each dish reached its intended table. She overheard a murmur from two senior ministers:

“She thinks herself more than an archivist,” one whispered.
“Overstepping her station,” the other replied.

Li Xiao’s cheeks flushed, but she held her posture. Rumors of her rising influence had already reached some ears. She reminded herself of the code edict she had drafted: cruelty and envy had no place here.

When the banquet concluded, Ambassador Eirian rose. “Let us toast this alliance,” she said, lifting a porcelain cup of jasmine wine. “To Li Xiao and Jin Tao—architects of our unity.”

The guests echoed her toast. Li Xiao bowed deeply, her heart fluttering at the public recognition.

After the banquet, Li Xiao led the delegation to the Water Garden, where floating lanterns bobbed on koi ponds. She had designed a special display: lanterns shaped like Isles’ sea‑shells drifting among lotus blooms. The envoy’s delight was evident as they watched the lanterns glide.

Ambassador Eirian turned to Li Xiao. “Your creativity knows no bounds.”

Li Xiao smiled. “Our cultures are boundless when we share them.”

As they admired the scene, Lady Meng—recently returned from her border service—emerged from the shadows. She approached Li Xiao with a courteous bow, though her eyes held a trace of challenge.

“Archivist Li Xiao,” Lady Meng began, voice polite but cool. “The Hall of Scrolls was a fine display. Yet some of our older scholars question whether cultural fusion dilutes tradition.”

Li Xiao’s heart thumped. She met Lady Meng’s gaze steadily. “Tradition lives through adaptation. By weaving new threads, we preserve the whole tapestry.”

Lady Meng’s lips twitched in a half‑smile. “Wise words. I shall reflect on them.” With a curt nod, she glided away.

Li Xiao exhaled, relief mingling with resolve. “Even tradition must embrace renewal,” she whispered to herself.

That evening, the final ceremony awaited: a Lantern Dance combining imperial court movements with Isles’ folk steps. Li Xiao joined the dancers for a brief demonstration, her robes swirling like petals on water. The audience—imperial princes, foreign envoys, and common artisans—watched in rapt silence as the performers moved in harmony.

At the dance’s climax, Li Xiao and Jin Tao stood center stage. He lifted her hand, guiding her through a final flourish. Lanterns overhead glowed brighter as if in applause. The crowd erupted in cheers.

Amid the celebration, Ambassador Eirian approached Li Xiao and presented her with a silver‑filigree brooch in the shape of a wave‑encircled lotus.

“For your leadership,” the ambassador said softly. “May it carry our alliance forward.”

Li Xiao accepted the brooch, tears pricking her eyes. “Thank you, Excellency.”

Jin Tao placed a hand on her shoulder, pride shining in his crimson gaze. “Your light guides us all.”

After the festivities, Li Xiao and Jin Tao walked through the silent gardens, lanterns unlit but still swaying. The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of jasmine and pine.

Li Xiao paused by a reflecting pool. She retrieved the obsidian shard from her pocket and held it to the water’s surface. The black fragment seemed to absorb the moonlight, then refract it into a subtle glow.

Jin Tao joined her, slipping an arm around her waist. “The hidden flame may rise again,” he said quietly. “But your light will always find a way to quench it.”

She leaned into him. “Together, we will keep the empire safe—and bright.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Together, always.”

Under the palace’s watchful walls, Archivist and Grand Advisor stood side by side—hearts intertwined, ready to face whatever shadows or dawns lay ahead.
