Chapter 18:

That's my husband

Fight for you

We flee from where we left Charles. My blood runs cold when I hear a voice. Marquess Ross Fuldger is amongst a group of hired men. They spotted us and are in pursuit. Rox stands his ground telling me to get some distance while he holds them off.

"Like hell." I say stopping in my tracks. Rox begins deflecting attacks and cutting them down. One guy stepping toward me has his sword drawn has a wicked smile on his lips. He lunges while I side step, I parry a few of his swings before grandpa shows up.

"What's wrong with your stance?" Grandpa asks.

"Ahh! My feet are too far apart dang it!" I say frustrated with myself. I fix my stance and I'm able to hold my ground.

I see Rox finished off the men around him and Ross is shouting things along the line that I belong to him and swinging his sword at Rox. Rox is holding off the attacks but is slowly loosing ground due to welding daggers and not a sword. Rox's lips are starting to turn up into a snarl at the things Ross is saying.

I lock swords with the guy I'm fighting. In a swift motion I spin so I'm behind him and make a cut on the back of his thigh. He falls to the ground screaming in pain with his leg no longer functioning. Grandpa gives me a thumbs up and is gone again.

"If you get up, you will be dead. I need a messenger and I hope that can be you." I tell him. He throws his sword from himself as a sign of surrender.

Ross has his back to me and I can tell Rox is even angrier now. Rox and I lock eyes for a second and I nod at him to get ready. I charge Ross' back and stab him with my sword. He stops moving. And looks down at his chest.

"S-sophia? My gentle, sweet Sophia? H-how?" He murmurs.

"I was never yours, you perv."

"But you... were going... to bare me children." He starts to slump.

"Look up, you see that goblin? That's my husband and the only one I will bare children for. You will never place your filthy hands on me." I snarl.

"N-no." He weakly says falling to the ground. I pull my sword free and stand as tall as I can infront of Rox.

"You have blood on your hands now because I couldn't kill him first." Rox tries saying more but I hear more people coming in the distance. I grab his hand and pull him along side some brush.

A small group of men led by Jack show up. Should I step out? The men and Jack exchange some words then start to canvas the area.

"Dad!" I yell out. Jack looks around frantically.

"Dad!?" Rox whispers looking at me funny.

"Sophia?!" Jack shouts back. I step out with my sword still in hand. The other guys draw their swords. "Put down your swords you idiots!"

The men thought about what he just commanded them for second but then listened and sheathed their swords. Rox and I do the same.

"Are you hurt?" Jack says jogging to be in front of me. He takes my face in his hands looking me over. He leans in with a whisper. "Did you two do this?"

"I'm fine. And yea we did." I reply honestly out of habit. The man is scary when you lie to him alright.

"You're safe. That's all that matters." Jack goes on. "Oh, your mother is here."

"Why would mother be here?" I ask.

"All part of the plan my dear. Let's go." Jack says. "You guys clean this mess up."

"But!" One brave man speaks up. "We had orders to kill her on the spot!"

"That you did but Charles is dead so the order too died." Jack explains. The men pounder on that for a minute.

"Then what about the murder of Ross?" Another asks.

"Is there evidence that these two took out all these men?" Jack asks. I may have given the guy I spared a death glare.

"I-it wasn't them. Nope! It was... bandits. Yea! Bandits!" Says the man that apparently can't lie.

"You hear that? These two are innocent." Jack steps over Ross' body and leads the way to camp.

Once there Jack hands the officer in charge a piece of paper. My mom comes out of her tent and greets us.

"This! This is the seal of the king!" The officer yells out.

"Yea. You going to read it to us or what?" Asks Jack, the man nods nervously.

"Attention everyone! This is a letter from the king himself." The officer shouts out. "To whome that may be reading this, the man you received this letter from that goes by the name Jack is my 7th son. He is of the royal family and shall be treated as such. Any harm that becomes of him shall be repaid ten fold..." the letter continues all noble like and is well drafted by a lawyer so loopholes are next to none. When the man finishes everyone is left in shock besides my mother and Jack. Then everyone in camp hits their knees infront of Jack.

"Haaaaaa." Jack sighs. "I did not miss this part of my title."

"D-d-d-d-does this mean I'm technically of royal blood?" I stutter. "L-l-l-like a princess?"

"Yeeeaaaa." My mom slyly replies. "Now that this is public, I can tell you more. Let's go into my tent and have some tea though."

"I'm going to take control of this camp while you do that honey." He says giving her a kiss.

"I thought that was a secret?!" I shout.

"Charles is dead, so there for I'm not cheating. Any noble woman would find a suitor after her husband passes." Says mother. Gosh dang she knows how to play her cards well.

She leads us to the tent and I'm in a daze.

"Be a dear and introduce me to this fine man escorting you." My mother says kindly.

"Oh! Um mom, this is Rox." I say holding my hand out as if I'm presenting some artwork.

"It's very nice to meet you again Rox." My mother bows her head.

"Like wise." He bows back.

She leans to me whispering. "You have good taste sweetie. He is so muscular and his ears," she blushes a little, "don't get me started on those wild yellow eyes."

"Mom!?" I yell. How could she think lewd thoughts? I mean I do think of them quite a bit but we're married now so it's fine. Right?

"Oh um... mom. Rox and I are married now." I say a little sad because she wasn't there for the wedding.

"I had a feeling. A woman walks a little different after getting married." She smiles at us.

"Mom!" I shout and Rox's ears turn red.

"What? Oh. Why did your mind go there! I ment it as you have confidence in your gate now. Geez." She giggles while poking her fun at me. We need a topic change, now!

"So how and why is Jack of royal blood and was posing as a servant?" I ask.

"That. That's a bit of a long one." My mother sighs. "It started after I was married off to Charles. There was smuggling of all kinds happening in our country. Turns out Charles was involved in a good chunk of it. Their operation went belly up and he some how survived by marrying me and inherenting my family's money. Jack was assigned to infiltrate the manor and gather evidence. We fell in love so he found ways to stop the smuggling from within so he could stay by my side without ruining my name along with yours."

My mother's eyes are soft while talking about her and Jack's story.

"The things people have done for me all my life." I stare into my tea cup unsure of what to do with myself. All the information of who I truly am and everything I have done on my own are clashing together but at the same time fit. "Oh by the way mom. I'm chief to the skull bashers tribe of goblins in the these mountains."

"W-what?" She stutters looking at me in disbelief.

So what would my title be? Chief princess? Princess chief Sophia? I wonder if I can ask my grandpa about banning titles.
