Chapter 3:

You Can't Silence A Revolver

Makeinu no Tōboe [Howl Of The Loser Dog]

Mika sat angrily on the toilet seat, displeased by the guard facing away from her as she tried to relieve herself. She had never felt so vulnerable and humiliated in her entire life. The girl sulked, unable to complete her business.
"Um, do you have to be in the same room as me? This is a violation of my privacy!"

The yakuza member shifted uncomfortably as he continued staring at the door. He rubbed the back of his neck with a reluctant hand.
"Boss' orders. I'm not thrilled about this either."

Mika let out a sigh of defeat, clenching her legs shut as she squirmed on the cold, plastic seat.
"Can you at least cover your ears? I'm not running away, I promise."

The man obliged, bringing his cupped hands over his ears as she released her bladder. There was an awkward silence amidst the sounds of the toilet flushing. After Mika had washed her hands, she gently tugged the shoulder of the man who was assigned to watch over her, even as she used the restroom.
"You done, kid? Come on, you have training to attend."

The tiny girl stayed in line behind the lackey, occasionally glancing at her surroundings as she tried to familiarize herself with the apartment's layout. Stepping into a dimly lit chamber of a bedroom, Mika gazed up at Ninagawa Charlotte, who was already gripping a pistol in her left hand.
"I was beginning to think you would be late. Come, loser dog, pick a weapon."

Mika stood before the firearms placed neatly on the table. Her eyes immediately glued to a snub nose .38 Smith & Wesson hammerless revolver. There was something about the weapon that made her heart flutter, yet she couldn't pinpoint the exact reasoning. She picked it up, testing its weight in her small hand.
"This one. It's small, like me. It should be easy to carry and conceal."

Charlotte's eyes widened at her quick choice, admiring how it looked in the puppy's hand. She paced around Mika in slow circles, eyeing her up and down with a terrifyingly calculated stare.
"Good choice. It's small, but powerful. You can't go wrong with a Smith & Wesson. The only problem is, a revolver like that can't be silenced."

Mika nodded, her gaze still fixed on the revolver in her grasp. A frightening thought invaded her mind. She slowly wrapped her finger around the trigger, pointing it directly between Charlotte's eyes.

"Go ahead, pull the trigger. I doubt you could, even if you wanted to. Here, I'm giving you free meals and a place to sleep. Good dogs never bite the hand that feeds them."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed in defiance, silently reminding Mika of her place in this situation.

Mika stood completely still, contemplating the pros and cons of her decision. Quickly, she lowered her gun, letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding. There was a moment of silence before Charlotte stepped closer to hand her a tanto blade, sheathed in a beautiful rose petal painted scabbard.
"Tuck that in the back of your skirt, between your ass. You never know when you'll need it."

Mika shivered at the feeling of the cold, polished wood resting against her bare flesh. She straightened her posture, trying to get used to the sensation of having something poke at her bottom. It was uncomfortable, to say the least.
"It's... cold."

"Stop complaining. Now, go ahead and shoot those targets. Don't worry, this room is soundproof. If you're too sensitive to the noise, put those on."
Charlotte motioned toward a four-foot table where various sizes of noise-canceling headphones were placed. Mika adjusted her grip, carefully pointing the barrel of her revolver at the human shaped paper targets at the end of the room.

Human shaped targets. They're just bundles of paper... not the real thing.

The deafening pop of her first shot caused her to drop her gun, immediately bringing her hands to her ringing ears. She looked around in horror, unable to hear anything but the high pitched echo in her mind. She could see Charlotte's lips moving, but couldn't understand a word she was saying.

"Can you hear me, puppy?! Hello?!"

"What? Sorry... that frightened me."
Mika rubbed her forehead to soothe herself.

"Don't ever drop my gun like that again! Do I make myself clear?!"
Charlotte shoved the hot revolver back into Mika's hand, forcing her to grip the handle tightly.

"Yes, master."
Mika raised the firearm back up, using her free hand to cover one of her ears as she aimed. Her eyes looked down the sights, focusing on the head of her target. Images of Charlotte plagued her mind, quickening the pace of her breathing as she pulled the trigger.

"Impressive. You somehow managed to get a perfect bullseye. Now, land twenty more by dinner time, or I'll send you back to your cage without a meal."
Charlotte took a seat behind Mika, lighting her pipe with a match. She watched in fascination as Mika somehow missed her target four times in a row. She chalked her bullseye up to beginner's luck.
"What are you standing around for? Reload!"

"I'm... not sure how."
Mika fumbled with the cylinder, unsure of how to open it.

"Holy hell, puppy. This is going to be a long evening."
Charlotte rose from her chair, skillfully demonstrating how to quickly and efficiently reload a revolver. Her hands curled around the grip with practiced patience, gently placing each bullet into its chamber. She shoved the pistol back into Mika's hand.
"Now, twenty more head shots."

"Is there, like, some kind of secret?"
Mika aimed once again at the human shaped object, lining the barrel up with its head. Her palms were on fire from the intense recoil, allowing her to feel her pulse between her fingers on the rubber handle.

"Wouldn't you like to know? That's for you to decide, everyone shoots differently."
Charlotte sat back down, puffing a ring of smoke from her mouth.

"Don't you want to mold me into your perfect little assassin? I suggest you give me some pointers."
Mika's mind filled with rage as she angrily shot at her target, landing six perfect headshots.

"Oh, it seems like anger fuels your latent potential. That's a risky trait to have, puppy. Emotions can get you killed on the battlefield."
Charlotte stood directly behind her, caressing the small girl's shoulders with her long fingernails.
"Fourteen more and I'll give you a treat~"

Mika swiftly emptied the bullet casings from her gun, shouting as she plopped six more silver bullets inside the chamber, just as Charlotte had instructed.
"I'm not a loser dog! I'm a human being! I swear to God, I'm going to kill you for talking down to me!"
She raised her revolver back up, sending six more bullets directly into the head of the dummy, imagining it was Ninagawa Charlotte instead.

Charlotte's dark eyes glistened with fascination, watching as she carefully crafted her child soldier into a natural born killer. Her lips curled into a maniacal smirk, letting out a deep, sultry chuckle from the back of her throat.
"Excellent. You're shaping up to be a fine subject. Keep this up, and I may promote you to a real bedroom!"
