Chapter 29:

Medio: END

The boar mask

“It requires an extremely keen eye to see the beauty in all things, and as much as I liked to believe I have such eyes, you have now proved me wrong. Can you explain what you did, Leucothea?” Asked the priest, pulling himself out of the rubble, all the way down the mountain where the city of Medio once stood. His voice was still soft, but it started rising the more he talked.

The priest had his face bloodied, his clothes a complete disaster now, after being buried under the avalanche of mud that destroyed Medio.

“I’ll admit I overplayed my hand somewhat. The hero of Death tried to escape, so I tried to stop him, but ended up bringing the whole city down with me instead.” Said Halia, slightly disappointed, seeing that the telchine was still alive.

“And may I guess that you also allowed Mors to escape? And our little guy to die? Truly, what did we come to do here in the first place then? How do you plan to break into the city of Yatro, now that we don’t have our little guy with us?”

“And I still don’t understand why bother doing so, the waters will take it away eventually.” Replied Halia, giving a couple of steps back, not wanting to dirty herself in the mud just like the priest.

Even when she was in the middle of the city when it fell, she was completely unscathed.

“Your blindness to our vision is clear, seeing how foolish your actions have been. Should I take this as an act of betrayal, dear friend?” Replied the priest again, giving another couple of steps forward and grabbing Halia’s arm before she could retreat again.

“Excuse me for having some initiative, after all, dealing with the hero was your task, not mine. Things got out of control, and believe it or not, I am not all powerful. Not like it matters, now that it’s all over.” She responded, this time, facing the telchine, looking into his eyes.

Even the other telchines didn’t dare to do so, but she didn’t fear death anymore, so his eyes had no effect. The priest seemed impressed by this.

“I’ll admit my work was not my best today, although I must say that feeling the strength of the hero myself was an experience worth living. We can talk about your actions in more detail once we return, after all, it seems like our problems have solved themselves this time.” Said the priest, pointing to the sky.

It had been a couple of hours since the battle on the city started, just at the break of night. When it did, the city was covered by the storm that telchines bring with them, but now the sky was completely clear.

And the sun was still trying to set in the mountains, not having moved at all.

“We may not need the little guy after all, this marks our third blurring success. With how quickly we managed to do this one, I think I know what our next blurring should be…”

The priest let Halia’s arm go. She looked at the sky, the way the sun and the moon stayed present on opposite sides of the sky. The stars that shone through it, even when the light of the sun should make them invisible to the eye.

Without saying any other word, the two telchines disappeared, summoned to the main bastion of the telchine forces. That day they would concede, as no matter how many battles they lose, they had won the war from the start.
