Chapter 10:
The Inner Void – The Awakening of the Évolis
The forest stretched endlessly ahead, a sea of shadows and silence broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant howl of unknown creatures. Rioshi moved with purpose now—each step taken not in fear, but in search of growth.
The battle with the giant wolf had changed something in him. He had tasted victory, not out of rage or desperation, but through control, awareness, and intelligent use of his power. The Évolis pulsed within him like a second heart—alive, alert, and hungry.
He was no longer waiting for danger to come to him.
He was hunting it.
Tracking the StrongRioshi began to follow signs most would ignore: broken branches, claw marks in trees, faint energy signatures that vibrated beneath the earth. The Évolis helped him perceive things beyond normal senses—temperature shifts, lingering traces of magic, pheromones of apex predators.
His goal wasn't just to win battles. It was to evolve strategically.
He avoided easy targets. Weak creatures no longer interested him. He needed challenges—opponents that could push him to his limits, and from whom he could absorb something worthwhile. Speed, camouflage, elemental resistance—anything that could tip the scales in his favor when it truly mattered.
After a full day of roaming deeper into the northern sector of the forest, where even other adventurers rarely dared to go, he finally felt it: a dense aura of power, old and intelligent. Not just raw strength—cunning.
This was exactly what he was looking for.
The Predator Beneath the SoilThe ground beneath his feet trembled, ever so slightly. At first, he thought it was an illusion—until a burst of air shot up from the earth and something massive erupted from the ground. A scaled beast, like a fusion between an armored centipede and a subterranean serpent, towered above him, its carapace gleaming with hardened crystal plating.
[Species Detected: Terraklythe — Elemental Burrower Class]
Abilities: Earth Assimilation – Armor Scaling – Tactile Echolocation – Burrowstrike – Acid Spit
Assimilation Potential: 37%
Rioshi’s eyes narrowed. Exactly what I needed.
The creature didn’t hesitate. It lunged with a speed unnatural for its size, a blur of crystal claws and hissing venom. But Rioshi had already moved—his Évolis reacting instantly, pulling data from the enemy’s motion.
He ducked under the first strike, launched upward with enhanced reflexes, and slashed at the exposed tissue between the armored plates. The creature shrieked, its hide repelling most of the blow—but it was enough for Évolis to latch onto it.
And then the pain hit.
A pulse of toxic energy flooded into him. His legs buckled, vision blurred.
Warning: Assimilation Disruption – Internal Corruption Risk Detected.
For the first time, Rioshi realized: assimilation was not without danger.
But he didn’t back down.
Instead, he focused—funneling the Évolis inward, redirecting the corruptive energy into a secondary node. The ability to adapt wasn't just about gaining powers—it was about containing them.
Minutes passed like hours. The battle tore the ground apart. Acid sizzled through trees. Earth shattered with every collision. And when it was over, the creature lay motionless, and Rioshi—on his knees—was alive.
Barely.
The Aftermath and AwakeningHe crawled to the shade of a boulder and sat against it, breathing heavily. Sweat and blood mixed on his skin, and his veins glowed faintly with the foreign energy struggling to settle inside him.
New Abilities Acquired:
– Earthen Resistance (Passive)
– Burrow Instinct (Tactical Movement)
– Crystalline Shell (Defensive Enhancement)
– Acid Mitigation (Partial Resistance)
Not only did he survive—the Évolis had evolved.
Rioshi looked at his hand as it shimmered faintly with an earthy glow. He was stronger, yes. But more importantly—he was learning how to survive.
This was no longer about proving himself or chasing some unclear destiny.
It was about living long enough to shape it.
