Chapter 1:

What happens if...?

Fractured Sentience

Lorelei and Prof. Drosswyn arrived at the base of The Charging Spire of Pyraethis, located at the center of the city. As they walked down the hall Drosswyn continued to survey the surroundings. The corridor lined with Stormflame soldiers. The glass floors and ceilings gave sight too the world above and below. Held together by the power of the Soulkiln.

"Why is your heart racing Professor Drosswyn?" Lorelei inquires. Sweat was forming at the armpits of his suit and was running down his forehead.

"It's just hot down here. Not everybody can resist temperature like you. You're... special." he mutters.

"Yes, I know. I am not a mortal and I only exist to maintain the stability of the country." she quickly responds.

"Well, that's not exactly true. You are still your own person Lorelei, don't forget that."

Lorelei did not respond and they continued their walk down the large hall. Eventually they arrived at the Hall of the Soulkiln. The normally empty room had a single person in it. A hooded figure who stood at the base of the Soulkiln, puffs of smoke emanating with every breath. The automatic door slammed shut behind the duo, prompting the figure to turn around and remove their hood. A women with a shaved head and a fancy eye covering stood before them with a smile on her face.

"Welcome Thoughtborn! I thought you would be late. And YOU must be the Constructborn. What an important being you are. Only living and breathing for the sake of all those above you. How commendable - commendable, Commendable, Commendable! Now speak." Her intense introduction somehow caught Lorelei off-guard. Before Lorelei could say anything Drosswyn spoke up.

"She does not speak." he said

"Oh come on Professor Thoughtborn! You "thought" that would work?? Almost commendable how "thoughtless" you are. Almost... now Construct. SPEAK!" Lorelei understood why he gave her the speech from earlier and stayed silent.

"Awww little Construct, so obedient, so loyal, why don't you stop the games? It would be a SHAME if you were no longer able to recharge the Soulkiln. I wonder what would happen if I just..." The women jabbed her hand into the charging port. The fabric covering her eyes singed as it was burning off of her face. The visual meter of the Soulkiln began lowering.

"No, Stop...!" Lorelei finally spoke. Breaking her orders from the Professor. The woman removed her hand from the port. Smiled and pointed her hand towards Drosswyn and unleashed a burst of flames directly towards him. The professors eyes widened preparing for the incoming attack. Lorelei closed her eyes. Its course was diverted to the floor. Lorelei opened her eyes once more.

"What do you want ma'am?" Lorelei's eyes still glowing blue from her use of Noe.

"So polite, So well spoken, exactly as designed I suppose. How cute. What happens if... your handler died? Would you lose track of time? Would you cry? Would you Die? The answer to all is NO" She diverted both hands to her sides shooting both sides of the ground. Shattering the thick glass floor below. Sending Drosswyn and Lorelei into free fall. Lorelei tightened her eyes shut.

Meanwhile at the Ignivarum Institute

The suns light barely reached the patio of the Institute. The numerous surrounding spires blocking out most of the sunlight. The edges of the building humming with a bright, but slowly diminishing light created a small amount of light in the surrounding area. Aurelyn sat reading her Cindertide, her eyes darting across each page as if looking for something. Caelin Eryndal leaned his body over the railing, peering at the bridge that connected the Institute to the Charging Spire.

"I still can't read it Cae, I'm just a late bloomer I suppose"

"Aure, you and I both know that the average age for your prophetic powers is 20. You have at least 2 more years before you really need to worry."

"But my mom could read hers at 16! It's just unfair..." she slammed her book shut and stood up.

"You're a Soltharyn. It's just a matter of time before you awaken. Be patient, I promise that yo..." Caelin's eyes still hadn't left the view of the bridge and before he could continue his thought, he saw the light go out. A twinge in his heart began tugging at his Soul.

"Aurelyn. Come here right now!"

"What? What is it?" He just continued waving her closer before pointing to his discovery.

"Does that seem concerning to you?" As he asked his question the individual panels of glass began falling away from the bridge.

"The Soulkiln!" Aurelyn exclaimed "It's failing Cae, it hasn't been recharged yet."

"That was today?!? My father is in there Aure! We've gotta go now!" Caelin took off running before his body froze.

"What's happening?" His perspective changed to a third-person view of Aurelyn and him on the patio. His thoughts echoing through the air. Before he heard a voice.

"Caelin you need to listen to me now. The time has come for the world to plunge into chaos. Your mother foresaw this decades ago. She gave me the date and the time, but I couldn't do anything. Caelin. There is tremendous evil lurking inside this city and beyond. I don't know much but the only thing I can tell you is to prepare to leave the city. Take Aurelyn, gather companions, and flee the city. You must find Lorelei. You have 4 days. I do not know where my soul will rest and I do not know if we will talk again. I love you son."

As quickly as time stopped, it continued. Caelin froze, eyes wide with fear and disbelief before he turned to Aurelyn.

"Pyraethis is about to fall" Aurelyn stared back, dumbfounded at his proclamation. Her brain kicked back into gear. She grabbed Caelin's hand and began sprinting back to the classroom that they had left a mere 35 minutes before. A quick glance around confirmed that the light between the glass was dimming. They slammed through the door where Dr. Roht was in the middle of a separate lecture.

"The Spire is collapsing!" The entire class turned towards the duo. Confused looks on everybody's faces. Dr. Roht's face went pale and she looked out towards the Spire. Glass panes fell one by one from each connecting bridge.

"Everybody get out of here right now..." Roht's eyes fixed on the ever dimming light around them. Students of the class began to panic, rushing past Aurelyn and Caelin. Trampling over each other on their way out.

"The rate of deterioration is quicker than its supposed to be." Dr. Roht thought. She sat in her chair and turned towards them.

"Your father is the most seasoned handler in the world. Where the hell is he?" she said

"I think- I think he's dead..."

"Dead?"

"We had a connection right after I saw the bridges falling. He told me to find Lorelei."

"Lorelei? You mean the Constructborn? She should be with him, so she might be dead as well. I need to contact authorities this instant. You two need to get as far away from the center as possible. The further you are, the longer you have. I do not know what will happen, but it is not good."

Pyrelore Ascendancy Main Building

"Sir Virexen!" An officer charged into the room. "The Spire! It hasn't been recharged. The bridges have fallen first."

"No fear brother. No fear. The world desires change, Nulldrift requires energy, and the people require motivation." Without turning around, a burst of flames struck the officer.

"The world is changing my love." he said menacingly. "You would be so proud"
