Chapter 16:

Cute, Adorable Little Bullets

Makeinu no Tōboe [Eat Your Words, Loser Dog]

Shortly before dinner time, Kazuya and Mika arrived back at the Bara-gumi apartment complex. Glasses of beer were being passed around the busy table, even in front of Mika as she took her seat. She pointed toward the beer, and then toward herself.
"For me? You know I'm thirteen, right?"

The yakuza member nodded down at her, raising his own glass for a toast.
"Yeah, but tonight we're celebrating. Even dogs deserve a little treat every now and then."

Mika clinked the rim of her mug against her fingernail, carefully sniffing the golden liquid.
"What are you celebrating? I'm not really in the mood for a party."

"We're celebrating Kazuya's yubitsume! We all bet that by the time we left the Bara-gumi, Kazuya would definitely be missing a finger!"
The drunken man took a large swig of his drink, giddily chatting with his fellow colleagues as he left Mika's side.

Mika took a small sip of her beer, immediately spitting it out with a disgusted cough.
"This tastes like how urine smells! I hope you all choke on your own vomit!"

Her vulgar comments were drowned out by the loud dinner time chatter. She watched from across the table as Charlotte and Kazuya stuffed their mouths with hamburg steak, each of them enjoying a glass of Sapporo with their meal. Mika kept her eyes glued on Charlotte, secretly watching for an opportunity to take her life. Of course, the opening never came.

By the end of the night, most of the Bara-gumi had passed out in their respective rooms, leaving the remaining few to play a game of Mahjong in their drunken state. Mika used the moment of chaos to explore the apartment, freely roaming the entirety of each floor. She familiarized herself with which rooms belonged to whom, keeping a mental note of who was important and who was just a lackey. Remaining unnoticed, Mika slipped into the basement, taking a seat in her kennel. She used a black marker to sketch the apartment's layout on four separate napkins; each one representing a different floor of the complex.

Mika's moment of concentration was halted momentarily as multiple loud thuds banged against the floor overhead. She clicked her tongue, trying to focus on her drawings. Four more loud thuds caused the ceiling above her to shake.
"Those stupid drunkards, it's the middle of the night! If I'm a dog, then those assholes are pigs!"

Three shouts were muffled by the sounds of suppressed gunfire coming from the dining hall. Mika froze in her tracks, instinctively rushing to the blind corner of the basement.
"Shit, are they for real?! What's even going on up there?! Don't tell me they're killing each other..."

Mika darted to the doorframe, carefully peering her head from behind her only source of cover. Four men, dressed in blue kimonos with flame patterns along their backs, scoured the first floor of the apartment. She ducked her head behind the door, reaching for the revolver in her suit pocket with trembling hands.
"The Naraku-gumi... I need to find Kazuya."

Upon inspecting the apartment's layout, Mika noticed that the entire second floor was soundproofed; more than likely due to the fact that it contained only target practice rooms. This seemed to be a fatal flaw in the Bara-gumi's intelligence, as a surprise attack on the first floor would be unheard by the higher-ranking members located on the fourth floor.

To add to Mika's distress, the Bara-gumi headquarters didn't have any fire alarms she could use to alert the members of their impending doom. She was all alone.

Mika held her revolver firmly in her right hand, sneaking around the hallway corners to get closer to the second floor. She could see three deceased Bara-gumi members lying across the floor of the dining hall, surrounded by Naraku-gumi members discussing their next course of action. Perhaps, it was due to fear, but Mika unloaded three of her six bullets into the back of one of the Naraku-gumi members, sending his lifeless body jolting into the table.

The three remaining opponents turned their heads to face the source of the noise, yet they saw nothing. Mika was crouched beneath one of the tables in the dining hall, desperately searching for a way out of this situation.

"Shit, they got Akira-senpai!"
One of the Naraku-gumi ran across the dining room, stopping inches short of the hidden Mika. She lined the tip of her revolver against the man's shin and pulled the trigger. Blood splattered around her face as the man collapsed, letting out a strangled scream. His face landed right in front of Mika's, to which she unloaded another bullet into his skull.

Silence washed over the dining hall, and Mika scurried between different tables, keeping herself out of view from the Naraku-gumi.

"Where the fuck are those bullets coming from?! Is it Kazuya?!"
The Naraku-gumi members scrambled behind a wall, taking a moment to check for the hidden gunman. They could make out the sounds of scurrying feet, but their eyes couldn't find the assassin.
"Shin, cover me while I head for the door!"

"What?! Hell no! I'm not going to let you retreat while I'm stuck in here with an assassin!"
The Naraku-gumi began to argue, giving Mika the distraction she needed to inch closer. She stood behind them, her bloodied face masking her pale skin beneath.
"Shin, behind you!"

By the time he had turned around, Mika's legs were clamped around his neck. She unloaded the remaining bullet into the man's skull, splattering blood on the face of the final invader. The last member of the Naraku-gumi let out a frightened shriek, spraying his silenced bullets in Mika's direction with desperation.
"You're the pink haired girl! This was just supposed to be a simple job! How are you so quick?!"

Mika dashed around the hallway, using the walls to leap above the frantic yakuza. She grappled him from behind, whispering against his ear with hot breath.
"You should have sent more men. Have a nice trip to hell."
Her tanto blade twisted into the man's neck, gushing crimson blood onto the floor below. The man collapsed forward, choking on his own blood as his consciousness faded.

Mika wiped the red fluid off her tanto blade and sheathed it in the scabbard above her buttocks. She gazed upward at the security camera at the corner of the hallway ceiling with narrowed eyes.
"Did you see me, Charlotte? Killing means nothing to me, anymore. I have no problem with taking your life."

Ninagawa Charlotte, who had been watching from her office on the fourth floor, smiled wickedly at her monitor. At the expense of three of her men, Mika had proven herself as her perfect little soldier. Charlotte pressed the button of her intercom, connected to the first floor hallway down below.
"That was quite the display, little puppy. I think I'll start sending you on Harumi's missions as a reward. Excellent work."
