Chapter 5:

Making Camp

Realms and Shadows

We walked away from the camp in silence, Kaida wanting me to be as far away as possible. She didn't try and support me as I walked, instead, she walked behind me with her sword drawn as I limped in front of her.

After walking for several minutes with intense pain in my leg, we finally stopped at the top of a hill. I plopped myself down on the ground, my leg throbbing in pain. Kaida walked up and stood next to me, sheathing her sword. She looked at the sun, which was getting quite low, and said, "It's going to get dark soon, you stay here and you don't move."

"Seriously? Even if I could leave, it's not like I know where I'm going." I thought to myself as she walked away. I didn't bother to try and see where she was going, I just stared at the ground and let my mind wander. I was broken out of my trance several minutes later after hearing Kaida walking back towards me. I looked up and saw her carrying a large bundke of branches in her arms, she only looked at me as she stopped in front of me and dropped the large bundle.

Staying silent, she began preparing the wood to make a fire. Within five minutes, she had already had a fire going and was now rummaging in her pack for something.

After a brief moment of searching, she finally pulled out what looked like animal meat, and she started prepping the food to cook it over the fire. Seeing the food made my stomach growl, and I realized that I hadn't eaten anything at all.

I watched her cook the food the entire time, and by the time she had finished, it was already fully dark. She took the piece of meat off of the fire, tore off a chunk, and tossed it towards me. I nearly dropped it, but I was able to catch it before it hit the ground.

My stomach was growling, so I hurriedly took a bite of the food and was met with a delicious taste, unlike anything I've had before. It made me forget about everything that was going on, only for a moment. My tail started wagging because of the taste, and I couldn't help but smile too. Noticing my enjoyment, Kaida said, "You act as if you've never had venison before." I swallowed and shook my head, my tail still wagging, "I feel like I would remember having something like this." I replied, "What is venison anyway?"

"Deer meat." she replied plainly. "Oh really? That's surprising, I never expected it to taste this good." I said to her.

"Stop that."

"Stop what?"

"Stop trying to strike up a conversation with me, the less I know about you the better … makes it easier for when I have to kill you."

"Oh" I said as I remembered what was going to happen, as my mood changed and my tail stopped wagging. I ate the rest of my food in silence, not wanting to upset her further. When I finished, I sighed and instinctively fingered the piece hanging from my chain necklace.

Kaida didn't say anything about it, as she was still eating her food. "What is that?" She finally asked when she finished. "I don't remember, but it feels important to me, so it must be something that I had before I came here." Was all I said to her, making sure that it was a short interaction. She didn't say anything, she only seemed to stare at the piece I had in my fingers for a moment, before turning her attention back towards the fire.

I let out a yawn, only now realizing how tired I was. I wanted to get the day over with as soon as possible, so I decided that was the best time to try and go to sleep. I leaned back and let my back plop on the ground. Kaida didn't seem to mind, she didn't say anything about what I did, and continued to sit there across the fire.

I let out one more sigh and closed my eyes, letting my racing thoughts calm down enough for my mind to finally drift and be met with the peace of sleep.
