Chapter 35:
Makeinu no Tōboe [Howl Of The Loser Dog]
Run away, quickly?! From what, who?!
Mika's eyes immediately scoured the premises, noticing the various prying eyes that had been watching her and Xianshi from afar. It seemed as if every person in the bar had their sights set on the rose-patterned duo, and she definitely didn't want to stick around to find out why.
She gripped the revolver around her garter belt, quickly scurrying out of the booth holding Xianshi's arm.
"Princess? What are you doing?!"
"Save it for later, Xianshi! We need to go!"
Mika desperately tugged him along as she made a beeline for the exit. She stopped dead in her tracks as two men in suits stood in front of the door. She couldn't believe she was too late. Her hand grabbed the revolver around her thigh, aiming it straight ahead at the men who dared to stop her.
"Out of the way!"
Xianshi quickly followed Mika's actions, aiming his pistol at the men surrounding them from behind.
"Looks like we have company, Princess. Your call, fight or flight?"
Mika tightened her grip on her revolver, waiting for someone to make the first move. She had come so far, and pledged her desire to kill Charlotte multiple times. She needed to stay alive no matter what.
"What do you want from us?!"
One of the men stepped forward, his mouth curling into a crooked smirk.
"I don't like harming children, so step aside. My business is with that Chinese prick behind you."
Mika took a step back, feeling the sweat beginning to form around her palms. She lined her sights up with the barrel of her revolver, steadying her aim on the man before her.
"I'm not some fragile little girl! I'm a member of the Bara-gumi! If you have something to say to him, you can say it to me!"
The man let out a low chuckle, cracking his knuckles as he stepped forward.
"Very well. The Obake-gumi hereby declares war on the Bara-gumi. Since you're not some fragile child, that means you'll be leaving this bar in a body bag alongside your foreign friend. It's not too late to back down if you want to live."
Mika's eyebrow twitched at the unfamiliar yakuza group title.
Obake-gumi? Meaning 'Ghost?' He must be referring to the Aka-gumi and the Kairi-gumi's merger.
"I see. So you're Sadako's rookie? Sorry, but I'm not backing down from a fight ever again. Not now, not ever!"
She spat her gum directly into the man's eye, rendering him blind for just a few seconds. During her grace period, Mika managed to land two bullets in his chest.
"Xianshi, run for the car!"
Mika used the chaotic atmosphere to make a beeline toward the bar's counter, dodging a hail of bullets. The expensive glass bottles behind the bar exploded in every direction, leaving Mika and Xianshi covered in alcohol and dangerous clear shards.
"That was crazy, Princess! You're a true badass! Though, I definitely want to make it out of here alive."
Xianshi quickly counted his bullets, shoving the pistol's magazine back into the grip.
Mika took a deep breath, clearing her mind of all the worst possible outcomes. She focused on one singular goal; her desire to live. She placed two bullets into the chamber of her revolver, replacing the empty shells she had just fired into the man at the exit.
"Okay... Let's split up. I'm small and fast, so I can probably outrun them. You focus on getting to the car. Don't worry, I'll watch your back."
The two nodded. Xianshi made a mad dash north toward the kitchen, while Mika scurried south in order to eliminate the remaining yakuza.
She lined her sights directly on the closest Obake-gumi member, and as if time had come to a halt, landed two clean shots into his femur. Mika had lost sight of Xianshi but successfully drew the remaining yakuza's attention to herself. Just as she had predicted, her speed was unmatched, making her an impossible-to-hit moving target as she leapt between tabletops.
Amidst the rain of gunfire, Xianshi had successfully made his way through the kitchen and outside the back door, leaving Mika by herself with five bloodthirsty men.
Mika knew she would have to stay in constant motion to avoid being captured or killed. Her feet began to ache, not having been accustomed to wearing wooden geta sandals. Bullets started to whiz past her face, ultimately altering the trajectory of her movement in the opposite direction. She let out a yelp of distress, feeling one of the men wrap his burly arms around her to restrain her.
"Let me go! If you kill me, the entire Bara-gumi will swarm your door faster than you can-"
The man brought his hand down on her face, silencing her bluff with a brutal fist.
She watched as her own blood dripped from her lips and onto her tattooed chest.
"You killed one of our men and injured another. It seems we underestimated you, child."
The man began to drag her closer to her doom, unaware of Mika's racing thoughts.
Why am I always being captured?! Why can't I be strong and cool like Kazuya?! I want to be swift and agile like Harumi, and skilled like Xianshi... Am I really just some nuisance little girl?
No! I'm the Dog Princess, not just some filthy stray mutt! Think, Mika... How can I leave this bar alive?!
Mika's eyes shot wide open, studying the way her legs dangled in the air and how the man had to walk with a wide stance in order to carry her. Every man's eternal weakness... a kick to the testicles.
She swung her leg forward, using just enough momentum to bring her leg back behind her, landing the bottom of her wooden geta directly on the man's family jewels.
The man let out a blood-curdling cry, dropping Mika to the floor. With the speed of an animal, Mika turned around and unsheathed her tanto blade, slashing the man's chest wide open. Blood showered in the middle of the bar, painting Mika with the crimson red fluid. Once again, Mika dodged bullets as she made her way toward the kitchen.
As soon as she reached the back entrance, a black Lexus drifted close to the door. Xianshi reached over the center console and swung the car door wide open, waving a frantic hand to motion Mika closer.
"Get in!"
Mika hopped into the passenger seat, not bothering to fasten her seatbelt or return for the wooden sandals she had dropped while running.
"Holy shit, Xianshi! We did it!"
Xianshi sped down the crowded streets, swerving dangerously close to pedestrians as he drove.
"You're damn right we did it! That was a hell of a show, Princess!"
He held his fist toward Mika.
Mika let out a small giggle, bumping her bloodied fist against his.
"We make a good team, Xianshi. I could get used to having you by my side."
Xianshi let out a giggle of his own, returning to a safe speed as he approached the freeway.
"Light a cigarette for me, will you? I've got a raging boner from that all that action."
Mika couldn't help but burst into a high-pitched laugh, finding Xianshi's crude vocabulary quite amusing. She brought a cigarette to her lips, puffing against a match. Her fingers guided it to Xianshi's mouth, letting him indulge in some much-needed nicotine. Mika leaned back in her seat, resting her bare feet on the dashboard as the neon lights of Tokyo passed her by.
"Too bad Otomo-san isn't here to help you take care of that boner."
Xianshi followed Mika's laughter with a boisterous chuckle of his own, smirking mischievously as he puffed his cigarette.
"True. Maybe I'll use the Bara-gumi's funds to buy me a prostitute for the night. Though, I can't imagine they would be thrilled to get naughty in a basement full of corpses and drugs."
Mika smiled, plopping a fresh piece of bubblegum in her mouth.
"You never know. But for now, I could really use some rock music. My adrenaline is through the roof."
She plugged her phone into the audio jack of the car, letting the harsh distortion and heavy drumming create a soundtrack for her wild night.
