Chapter 6:
Soldiers of Heart and Steel
At first, it didn’t seem to Special Agent Nyasi that the call she had placed would connect at all. The comm unit on her desk sat silent for half a minute, displaying only its light blue waiting screen while the encrypted signal bounced through hyperspace portals across four star systems.
Then, finally, the call went through.
The woman looking back at her from the other side of the screen appeared to be in her early thirties, with freckles on her face and long ginger-copper-red hair flowing from her head.
“Rehema!” the other woman exclaimed, a smile resting on her age-old face. Her green eyes glittered in the candlelight at the other end of the connection.
“Hello, old friend,” Nyasi greeted her. “How have you been?”
“You know how it is,” the other woman replied, not wanting to commit to an answer. Time was short. “It’s tough sometimes.”
“Tell me about it,” Nyasi said rhetorically.
She paused, then continued, “I have something for you. I’ve found someone I think you might be interested in. NL-27. Myan Lami. Keep an eye on him, will you? He could go either way, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you give him a chance.”
The other woman nodded. Nyasi quickly ended the call. She didn’t want to keep it going longer than necessary.
Now sitting alone in the silence of her dark office, Special Agent Rehema Nyasi had a feeling the young man’s future would be very interesting indeed.
Author's Note
Thank you for reading Soldiers of Heart and Steel! What you’ve experienced is just one of many stories set in the expansive Lords of the Stars universe I’ve been developing over the past 30 years. If you enjoyed it, there are many more tales to explore, where familiar characters and locations might reappear, or you could discover new favorites. Exploring the wider Lords of the Stars universe also gives you the joy of connecting the dots and uncovering connections between the stories.
If Soldiers of Heart and Steel is the first story from this universe you've read, I think you'll particularly enjoy Twilight Duty, which serves as something of a prequel to this story, and Choices of Steel, which is a direct sequel, continuing Myan Lami's story a few months later.
