Chapter 1:
Matilda's gift
"Hey Hazel what is this?" I ask my girlfriend while picking up a ragged, off white doll from her dresser. A small pin hangs from a thread from it's hand. I turn to see her laying on her side in her black blanketed bed. Her straight shoulder length brown hair follows her when she picks her head up to look over at me. Her brown eyes give me a questioning look til she sees the doll.
"Oh, Matilda gave me that voodoo doll a few years back for my birthday. Its suppose to be me but it doesn't work. I thought about tossing it but what if it starts working and I end up suffocating from it being in a pile of trash or get incinerated if it gets sorted into the burn pile. So there it sits, over the years it's grown on me. It's cute though isn't?" She smiles kindly after telling the story.
"Yea, cute." I try to hide my sarcasm.
"I'm going back to sleep. Good luck with work today and stay safe." She snuggles into her bed and I kiss her forehead.
"I love you." I whisper gently.
"I love you too." She says sleepily.
I go to get ready for work but stop in the bedroom doorway when I realize I still have the doll in my hand. I look back at Hazel then to the doll and back to Hazel.
I'm curious.
I pinch the pin in my fingers and push it into the dolls stomach. Hazel doesn't move. I try another spot in the stomach and she rolls over but makes no noise.
"Whacha doing?" She asks looking at me.
"Nothing just wishing I was back in bed with you." I smile.
She holds her arms up, beckoning me to be in her embrace.
"Oh how I wish I didn't have to work today." I lean against the doorway.
"You better go before you have no choice in the matter." She giggles.
"Don't worry, I will be back for you." I give her a wink before heading to the bathroom.
I open the bathroom door and there stands Matilda in her dark maroon cloak. Her dark gaze is on the doll in my hand. I look down and the pin is still in it's stomach.
"What. Are. You. Doing." Matilda says in a low voice I never heard before. A touch of blood lust flows through the air.
"I-i'm sorry for walking in! I was going to get ready for work but I can wait!" I slam the door.
"That's not what I'm talking about." She says through the crack of the door that she made. Her nails dig into the wood on the door itself as she pushes it open.
It's not often that I feel fear but today, I'm feeling it. I bolt for the main door not caring that I'm only in basketball shorts. From the doors shadow Matilda appears infront of me blocking the way. I blubber on about being sorry for walking in on her.
She snaps her fingers. Next thing I know I can't talk. Not even a sound. Wait, I can't even move! She snatches the doll from my hand and pulls the pin from its stomach.
"I came here to take care of Hazel because it's the first day in her menstrual cycle. And what do I find." With a flick of her wrist I'm thrown into a wooden kitchen chair. "You hurting her even more. She normally comes to see me but she picked spending time with you over me helping with her pain. Now she is doped up on painkillers and you have some sick fetish of her being in pain?!"
"What's going on in here?" Says Chelsea walking through the door with a bag of groceries.
"He's hurting Hazel." Matilda pokes her finger at me.
"He's what?" Chelsea says knife in hand.
"What is all the commotion?" Hazel says padding out of her room gripping her abdomen. In the split second of silence the sound of munching popcorn could be heard from the livingroom.
"So James walked in on Matilda in the bathroom." Says Tilly from the couch with a mouth full of popcorn. "He thought she was mad about that but she is really pissed off about is that he used your voodoo doll to hurt you."
Hazel looks at me helplessly sitting quietly in the kitchen chair.
"It's too early for this." She says and tries to go back to her room. Matilda emerges from the shadows and pulls up on Hazel's black tank top to look at her stomach. Hazel let's out a little squeal and tries to pull her shirt down.
"It worked!" Matilda proclaims.
"What worked!?" Hazel demands pulling her shirt down.
"The voodoo doll! I knew it would work but right now you're injured." Matilda places her hands on Hazel and heals the pin pricks.
"Why does it work now?!" She demands another answer.
"Well I must've been accidentally thinking of another spell while casting the voodoo one." Matilda smiles shyly. "So it only works when your romantically in love with someone."
"Well if that's the case." Hazel eyes me over her shoulder. "How sensitive are they?"
"Pretty sensitive." Matilda replies.
"Can you make me one of him?" The corner of Hazel's mouth turns up.
"Sure! That way we can give him back the pain he gave you ten fold!" Matilda laughs menacingly.
"Nah not for that. I didn't feel what he did to me but I will make sure he feels what I do to him later." She gives me the same smile she gave me last night.
Both fear and excitement run through me. A golden scroll pops into existence above me and hits my head on the way down. Now, I'm in pain.
Chelsea picks it up.
"Aba says James is late and that we need to let him go." Chelsea says clicking her tongue.
Matilda releases me and Hazel steps in front of me.
"Hurry back dear." She says with a mischievous smile before giving me a hug. I let out an ow as I feel a tuff of hair being pulled from my head. "Will this do Matilda?"
"Yes! Perfect!" She snatches the hair and starts doing her own thing while Hazel ushers me out the door.
"Don't be late." She giggles as she throws my shirt at me. Then shuts the door behind me.
"What just happened?" I ask myself pulling a shirt on.
